A simple, lightweight vps monitoring tool?

I have a server and some friends have servers, and we'd like to install a lightweight tool on each server that can monitor if the other servers are running, cpu/memory load is normal, httpd/mysql is running, and fire off an email if there are problems.

No ice in Ottawa?

I'm going to Ottawa tomorrow, and I just found out that the Rideau Canal is officially closed for the season. What? It's -9C in Ottawa and is staying below zero for the next few days. So, what are my chances of getting some ice skating in?

Please write 1000 words on how it feels to squeeze the handle.

I'm testing a mechanical device (something like a can opener) and I'd like to get people to give me more than comments like "convenient" or "comfortable".

Grinding up kitchen scraps?

I want to grind up kitchen scraps such as banana peels, avocado skins and orange peels so they compost faster. I've looked around, and the closest type of grinder I can find is what is called a meat chopper or "meat grinder". Will this work for tough vegetable matter or will it break or jam? Will it take forever?

This sql query should be simple...

I'm trying to merge simple contact data from a bunch of single tables into one big text (csv) dump. The problem is that not all fields are present for each user. e.g. one user may be missing an email. Because of the missing field, my current (big and ugly) sql query will not return all the rows.

Bend pipe into a 'U'?

I want to bend a metal pipe into a nice U-shape. Is this possible to do myself? If not, what type of company would be able to do this for me?

Getting rid of the phone buzz?

My phone has a loud buzzing noise. When I touch the screw on a lightswitch plate, sink faucet or a metal lamp, the buzzing stops. What is happening – and more importantly how can I use the phone without having to ground myself?

Or should I just become a famous artist?

I'd like to be able to live and work in Germany in the next couple of years. I know that their employment system is the definition of old school - virtually every job requires a multi-year apprenticeship or internship. I'm wondering, are there any exceptions I could exploit to get a job?

Encoding DV for computer playback?

What's the best way to encode DV for playback on Mac and Windows? I'm editing in Final Cut and would like output that doesn't mess with the aspect ration (no fat/squished heads), no interlacing jaggies, and can play on a G4 ibook or Pentium4 without stuttering. (Bonus points if the file size is smaller than DV!)

Help me find my new favorite community site

Can you suggest an online community that would help me to live better with less resources?

How do contractors blow budgets and still get paid?

Large projects that run over budget and the contractors get paid instead of eating the extra costs. Why?

Why are Apple laptop prices the same at all stores?

The price of Apple computers doesn't vary by retailer. How does Apple dictate pricing to their resellers — and how do they do this without breaking price-fixing laws?
