Kill Spam Dead
This scheme is so wrong-headed I don't know where to begin. First, it assumes that "unsubscribe" forms actually remove the address, which long experience has shown to be largely false. Secondly, it's abusive towards those who share network space with the Web sites being attacked. It assumes that those Web sites are actually hosted by spammers (it's been shown that many of the viruses that infect Windows "spam zombies" are capable of hosting Web sites, DNS service, and so... The weblog of Steven Champeon is in hiatus-mode...
Why? Because, as Su says, because I can :) I was kinda stressed out, too many projects going on, and so forth, and needed some sort of fun project to take my mind off the rest.
What can I say? I'm funny that way.
I had a bunch of 96x128 jpegs I'd made over the past few years for the "obligatory fake webcam pic" section of the 'blog. So, I threw them together on the home page and used a 404 ErrorDocument to redirect everything else to... [more]

Hi, all. I wanted to jump in and ask about any problems that you may have had (aside from the RSS feed, which isn't a feed of the whole site, merely of the weblog alone, and which was fixed a few hours after we launched). I see that at least one person here (stefanie) is having problems - what sort of problems? Can you send me a screenshot? What browser are you using? Details will help. (I hope that the snarky tone was just the result of a bad day, and not some irrational hatred of something we... [more]

The Once and Future King by T. H. White. Not only is it the charmingly eccentric modern take on the Arthurian legend, but it starts from the perspective of a young, not-too-terribly-smart boy called the Wart (Arthur), and follows his struggle to understand the forces of time, hope, belief, despair, doom, evil and good, while all the while endowed with less than adequate tools. If nothing else, you'll never forget this book, and it may change the way you look at humanity.

If you can't afford to patch (or don't trust the patch itself, as there are some reports coming in to BUGTRAQ that suggest it doesn't help) you can try creating a file named "notworm" in your C: drive root directory. I don't run IIS, but the advisory suggests that the worm stops if it sees a file named "c:\notworm". FYI.

Jeb said: Presentation is Content!
Oh, jesus. Not this tired argument again. Why do people spend so much time arguing from bad starting points? The way you're arguing, it's like comparing apples to pepper or salt to oranges and proclaiming that "salt and apples" is the wrong way to go. Or something. It's pointless. Cut it out.

It turns out before the election, representatives...
The problem with this election isn't the electoral college, but with the archaic systems used to collect the popular vote and the processes in place to ensure the accuracy of same.
Abolishing the electoral college is irrelevant to the outcome of this election. The fundamental issue is the popular vote, and a far more important issue is how the contenders' parties and camps are handling the fact that the election has not yet been won by any contender,... [more]

We've heard of intelligence and emotional...
I don't know why I'm even bothering to chime in here, but what the heck. Gary Zukav is brilliant. He's managed to con millions of people into thinking that animals have a "group soul", and so -- if you consider the logical consequences of that little theory -- they can be killed with impunity as long as there's enough left to breed. And this is because, hey, you're not killing an animal like you would a human, with our individual souls1. Whee! And he's made a lot of money... [more]

Remarq was evil. They scanned a whole slew of mailing lists and listed them on their site as though they were lists Remarq offered, and kept archives on their site. I had to go to admin approved subscriptions on webdesign-L to keep them out. What a pain in the butt.

I used to play poker with a Japanese guy from Seattle. He claimed that his brother had once sold Kenny G a stolen sax out of the trunk of his car. I dunno if it's true, but hey, it's about all I can add to this thread. Pat M. pretty much says it all.

Glenn Davis has quit ProjectCool....
No posting after four beers, the man said, and here I am posting before my first Coca-cola. Well, consider that a caveat of sorts.
I wish Glenn all the best; he's right when he says that he helped shape the Web, and we should take that to heart. Think of it: Glenn had little to do with the creation of the infrastructure, the definition of the protocols, the building of the browsers, etc., he simply pointed us to a new site every day for six years and in the process got...
