Help me Become an IT Ninja!
IT consulting.
MeMail me if you want more info on this, or just check out some of the bigger organisations. In that field you're expected to be a ninja, or learn to be one pretty damn quick. Career paths will differ for generalists/specialists etc, but I think this sort of work will give you what you want. I know there's actually a MeFi jobs post from allkindsoftime for this at the moment.
In hiring people for that field, I look less at their... [more]

"PC load letter?"
I had this problem too. For me it turned out that the export was failing midway through due to reserved chars being in the body of my post that were being interpreted as part of the XML, thus creating an invalid file. I removed that and everything worked out.

Wait, just went back and looked at my problem notes. I knew that those chars were the cause, but i could never get rid of them all. I went down the mySQL route - is that an option for you?
Here's a complete self link to what I did.
Hope this helps

Short-term lateral job move: How do I sell myself?
It's odd because in the past if I've seen jobs advertised that expected a hardcore coder (C#, C++ etc) to also be a graphic designer, I've always assumed that the person writing the job description didn't understand what they wanted.
You are someone's dream though. I'd expect a pretty small place. I once worked for a small web dev company doing .NET stuff amongst graphic artists. I got to dabble a little with graphics and the like and keep something relevant on my... [more]

Dad-day gift filter
You could always get a voucher from redballoondays.com.au, and he could choose something he felt capable of doing? There's some great stuff there.
If he's into newradio, he might appreciate podcasts or even some of the more educational books on tape. Borders have a good range, and Dymocks now sell all of theirs online. BBC, NPR and their ilk have a heap of good podcasts he might get into if you made it easy for him. Does he have a computer with net access? If not,... [more]

How can a tourist get a doctor in NYC?
Hey all,
Thanks for all the help, this was hugely useful. I should have pointed out that I do have travel insurance, but I didnt want the fee to be massive in case there was an issue with my claim.
I followed the advice above and called the hotel around 5am, a doctor visited at 8am. The whole caper cost $350 including drugs.
Most of all its good to know there are so many other options. I hope this thread will be useful to someone else as well in the future.

I'm sorry to see there's not more responses, and I've little to add as in the past 28 years I've learnt nothing. Your idea is lovely. That being said, a few things that might be interesting:

Wireless device down and won't get up again
I have a similar laptop and understand your problem
Id suggest the software has the ability to override. I can do it on my computer via the "HP wireless assistant software". It's running in the system tray normally and manages wireless and bluetooth for the computer. Regardless of the hardware switch (which often seems to forget what the setting should be I can fire up the software and hit 'enable' on wireless. Have you tried that?... [more]

Management Staff, Manage Themselves
Kind of agree with what's said above, and this is my job also.
I ensure that in beginning a project that each lead feels they have the time and resources they need to get the job done. I get them to tell me. They need to feel ownership from the start. I also request a high level schedule. They can track the low level details, but I like to know about major milestones.
I get each team to present me with a report (or an email) with a few dot... [more]

Oh and in addition, I get the project managers in a room together to report in a single meeting. There's a known time then and an expected preparation in advance. I find that those that tend to fall behind on delivery quickly get it together when they see others doing it.

How can I replicate data between several IIS 6.0 WebServers ?
Would Microsoft application center do this? I havent used it since Windows 2000, but I thought that was a part of its primary function. Maybe just the files, not the metabase though.
It might also be worth looking at MS scripting tools. There are tools to extract/import the metabase. You might be able to kludge something pretty simple together yourself. It's easy to corrupt the metabase though, so I would tread carefully.
Sorry I can't... [more]

Why does my computer keep freezing?
Man that sounds frustrating..
When that happened to me it turned out to be a dud nvidia video card driver I had. I don't know why it only suddenly started happening, but going through the drivers definately fixed it. I spent a long time in the device manager identifying any potentially problematic devices. Perhaps the software you installed reverted to a different driver version?

What will they do if I CAN'T turn on my laptop?
I've been asked to turn on my laptop before and couldnt because I was out of battery and I didnt have a travel adapter for a US socket with me. They recognised this, and just looked at the laptop carefully. Was no big deal.
I've travelled domestically and internationally through the US a few times since and not been asked.

How to dumb down a complex scenario graphically for my boss?
This is hard to explain in a simple post, but I'll give it a shot...
I've seen this done before a few times, though it is very hard to do well.
I think the mistake is trying to capture everything on the slide. There's usually nothing wrong with having supporting data/additional info at hand to explain the detail if they're interested or you've missed the mark.
I'm guessing something along these lines:

Leaving Car Headlights On
Lock the drivers side door every time she turns on the lights. Seems weird that she'd remember that and not the turning off of the lights, but it works for me.
When you try to get out, you can't, then you remember why and switch the lights off.

I've been in the same situation for years and mainly used a foldable scooter.
I just stepped up to a trikke and a kickbike
The trikke is awesome fun as has been mentioned, but would make for a tough commute. When you have momentum it is awesome though.
The kickbike is ridiculously light and easy to ride. Slightly higher clearance is also useful. They do sell them in the UK.

Help me become a responsible adult...
Just say yes.
I seriously recommend that book. It's a great new perspective on things and is a hilarious book. Not a self help book. In essence, stop trying to change the bigger picture and just focus on saying yes to things. The key here is recognising that your default response may have been no, but by saying yes you open yourself up to new things. It's also damn easy to do on the short term, so maybe that will make the bigger things easier.... [more]

My great train ride across Canada.
I've heard the Montreal to Vancouver leg can be dull, but I took VIArail all over eastern Canada last year and loved it. I chose to fly to Vancouver though, and it was pretty cheap and I flew early in the morning to get a good view. I would have loved to have travelled through the rockies by train also but time and esp. MONEY did not permit.
Elsewhere in Canada I found the train stations to be safe and well signposted with heaps of helpful folks around. I did a few... [more]

Correspondence Courses for an Australian
In Canberra CIT (equiv to TAFE) and local high schools offer a series of 'Adult education' courses. They're generally only a few weeks in duration, reasonably priced, and range from African Drumming to Print making to Flying Lessons to Motor Maintenance. It's not by correspondence, but these sound pretty ideal otherwise. They're generally targeted at folk who are occupied during the day so they run on nights and weekends. I assume an equivalent thing would exist close to you, Canberra can't... [more]

I did the architecture boat tour offered by the Chicago Architecture Foundation too. It was really interesting and a great way to see a bit of the city from the river. There are other so called architecture tours, but they don't provide any $ back to the foundation, and all run at about the $28 mark anyway. Oh and consider re-wording the objective, I assume that's what you're looking for in the keywords part of your question. I guess leadership is one aspect, but it would be worthwhile considering what field you'd like to be in - do you want to keep a foot in the technical camp or head 100% business?

A few random thoughts:
- Client workstation requirements. Some CRM software have ridiculous requirements.
- Constraints on customisation etc so they can sell a generic solution.
- Branding for you (if that matters)
- Cost model
- Client data protection
- Upgrade plans

Also, Brisbane has a regular curling comp in Boondall which is very amateur but very fun. Good exercise too.
If you're not good with balance for blading taking up a related sport like Inline Hockey or Rollerderby (both of which are available in Brisvegas)
Check out kickbikes too. Like giant scooters.

Is there any way I can get back the money my girlfriend owes me?
I do feel sorry for you, and can completely understand your position. It's unfortunate that your girlfriend didn't respect your contribution. I've been in a similar situation. On the bigger stuff, cut your losses, don't lend again. On the smaller stuff, expect that she'll chip in sometimes too. Don't keep track of every cent, because it's just stressful and pointless.
I don't have any constructive advice on how you might trap your girlfriend into admitting more, but... [more]
