Ask post: I, the accidental paparazzo: the celebrity I shot at Central Park wants to use my pictures
I'm going to be the sole fish swimming against the current here, but this was my personal experience:
I took some photos of an exploded cafe near my house (gas leak) and emailed them to a newspaper, stating that they could use it with credit, and to contact me if they wanted the full resolution copies. Didn't hear back from them and guessed it was nothing lost. Monday morning I opened our daily newspaper and my photo was margin to margin on page 2. I suspect had I asked for... [more]

Ask post: [ethicsfilter] two of my friends are getting it on. one of them has herpes. should I tell the other?
I was in a similar situation, where close friend slept with an acquaintance who we later found to have herpes. As things happen, I later slept with the close friend, but before either of us knew. We're both clear (AFAIK) but the close friend said she most definitely would have appreciated being told about it at the time. She confronted the acquaintance who initially denied the allegation but later came clean (sorry).

Considering approaching the acquaintance isn't an... [more]

Ask post: First Church of Gern
Whilst this wont answer your question, people here used to register their vehicles as hearses to avoid paying vehicle registration fees, until the government tightened up on the laws so that you had to carry a deceased in the vehicle at least once a year to keep the hearse status.

In the end: More trouble than it's worth.

Another vote for Python here. I don't actually know any python, I started with PHP (practicality really), but almost everyone I speak to in regards to branching out, or learning something alternative (and yes, I'm afraid of C++) recommend Python to me, it's easy to learn, powerful and actually practical too (eg: Django for web development using Python)

Ask post: Where can I order melatonin online, which will ship internationally?
Good responses so far, thank you :)
Just to clarify, it was $30NZD (which is $21 US), the first pharmacy charged me $30NZ, and the next one charged me $20NZ, either way it's stupidly expensive, but I believe it is because the supplier has an exclusive license with the government. I do plan to eventually write a well researched letter to someone who might care, but for now ordering from overseas helps my own personal situation.

From my usage though, one 3mg tab does nothing to me unless I'm fairly relaxed/close to tired. From my awake state I can need up to 6mg to make me sleepy, otherwise I just stay awake for hours.

Intentionally circumventing an employers web filtering could be a grounds for having either access removed, or being fired.... ALL THAT ASIDE.

I personally use FirefoxPortable on a usb stick, and also PuTTY portable and use a SSH tunnel to just past the marshal filter at work.

This only works at one of my places of employment, the other place doesn't work.. i suspect because they've blocked everything but port 80 traffic.... [more]

PortableApps are designed to leave no registry entries on the host computer, so you're not installing anything.

There are plenty of web based solutions, but they'll all be blocked as proxy avoidance. As you've experienced, WebSense/whichever is able to learn, so no amount of installing *PROXY programmes on remote hosting will work, not to the extent you're wanting anyway.

I 1993 the London Symphony Orchestra contributed to an album called Rock'n' Symphony, not sure if that might help, but from the album specifics it says it was recorded in studio, although there might have been other performances linked to it?

Ask post: How to fight the points?
[disclaimer: I work in motor insurance, in a common-wealth country, but it isn't compulsory yet] This will come out entirely biased, but only because I have to deal with this stuff day to day, but it really is the customers responsibility to ensure that their bills are up to date. We've had situations in the past where customers have let their policy lapse due to non payment then a few months later attempt to claim on their insurance saying that we never told them the policy had been cancelled.... Calling and lying about not receiving the dongle might also leave you SOL if they have some way to verify that you've already received and used it. In which case they would definitely not want to help you and also I believe might become fraud (attempting to obtain by deception).

Just because the documentation says one thing, doesn't mean they might be more flexible in if you actually push the point.

Ask post: Best "make your own t-shirt" companies?
By transfer royalties, I'm assume you're meaning that they market and sell the shirt on your behalf? Depending on how good of a designer/illustrator you are there is always Threadless and Designbyhumans for high end type stuff, but it is competitive entry, so your design has to be voted to be sent to print. On the other end of stuff, there is vanity printing like Redbubble or Cafepress. I haven't actually worked with any of the above, but I have no reason to doubt that they could transfer... [more]

I use NFS across 3 domains, and from what I've seen so far it's very good. Very economical and very simple to set things up, much more flexible than my previous hosts have been (which restricted the number of users or domains, or even subdomains).

According to their FAQ they recommend a service called WebCron, which accesses your site at a pre-set time, on schedule and triggers your script. I'm not familiar with the plug-in, but I wouldn't have thought it would use... [more]

Ask post: How do I price tag on my booty?
I have the original on 5inch floppy for MI2, except I lost one of the disks so I emailed lucas arts support and they mailed me out the MI1, MI2 and demo of CMI on CD free of charge. Bear in mind, I was 15 and this was about 7 years ago, but now that I hear that it's worth $50 I might try and palm it off!

I wouldn't have thought these were 'rare' games, since Lucas Arts is constantly re-releasing them in comps. or packs which I'm always seeing.

Scenester kid here (well, 22 year old punk/indie child).
I traded my mountain bike for a bmx, but I think the fixed speed deal is two reasons
1. lower maintenance, less things can get buggered up, and easier to fix yourself.
2. some kind of cycle courier inspired fad I think, more fashionable and retro.

But I'm guessing it's closer to the second, the trendy elite of having a single speed.

Can whales get rabies?

There has never been a case of rabies reported in a whale. This doesn’t mean that they are not susceptible to catching it. In fact, all mammals are susceptible to rabies. However, it is very unlikely that a whale could naturally get rabies. It would have to be bitten by a bat,... [more]

Scribefire is the new name for Performancing for Firefox, a blogging extension. I recall that Performancing was able to post to myspace blogs, so you could simultaneously post to multiple blogs at the same time through one interface. I can't tell if the new version under this new name still supports myspace, and I'm not willing to install it to find out right now, but it would be the most ideal solution, just to use one app to post to all your networking/blogs at once.... Actually a quick look at the extension entries on the mozilla site shows that Performancing needed another extension on top to work with myspace. Not sure if that one will work with Scribefire, but it's worth a shot. Be aware though, that Myspace changes its setup quite frequently and has no API so any external tools break with every change.

I don't know where you would buy one, but you could always approach a major toothpaste/toothbrush manufacturer (colgate, macleans, braun, etc) and ask if they have that kind of thing that they use for promo? I recall seeing a giant inflatable toothbrush being used at a sporting event by some promo people giving out samples, so it's worth a shot.
