Ask post: Is this gold?
Drag the "gold" against uneven porcelain — flip a plate or a tile. If the streak is dark greenish and smells of sulfur, it's pyrite.

Ask post: Who decided how much wine I should drink?
IIRC it has something to do with aging. The bigger the bottle, the longer the wine can be kept without going bad, the better it becomes.

Oh, and even in France 750 ml is a bit much for two persons. The French push the cork halfway back in upside down; the bottle is then invariably casually placed on the kitchen countertop next to the sink until the next meal.

Ask post: Do I fix my sister's iMac?
If you do, make sure you've got a backup of the entire disk, including the hidden partitions. There's a hardware test partition you can use by pressing D while booting.

Applecare would most probably just guide her through re-installing Mac OS X over the phone.

Ask post: Flats and sharps in music theory
There's already an A in the scale: F G A B flat C D E F8. If you wrote it F G A A sharp C D E F it could be more confusing. Why is there no B? How would you write the key signature?

Ask post: Am I destroying my clutch?
You remember correctly. You're heating up and using up your brakes. Additionally, by shifting into neutral or keeping the clutch down, you indeed won't be able to accelerate if you see the car behind you isn't stopping, and you'll travel much further if you're rear-ended.

Imagine you want to slow down for a stop sign. With your right foot barely touching the brake lever to make the braking light go on, downshift to second gear like you usually would, fully release the... [more]

Ask post: House vs. apartment. Are the costs of maintaining a house roughly less, the same as, or more than levies on a comparably sized apartment?
You spend much less on heating in flats than in houses because you benefit from the heat of your neighbours. Economies of scale make facilities less expensive than if you were the only person paying for them. Move to a flat without all those extravagant things you don't need?

Ask post: Classical classics
Once you've found a piece you like, you can learn a lot by comparing versions. It's even better if you can read and download the sheet music.

May I suggest comparing Schubert's Impromptus? Brendel, my favourite, is available on an excellent CD.

Beethoven's symphonies have been overcompared because interpretations tend to be very different and individual. I couldn't stand them until I discovered that Karajan wasn't the only chap who had directed... [more]

IMDB has a couple, but those include non-Tagalog movies where there's just a short Tagalog part. Adjust the parameters for Filipino, lower minimum scores, etc..

Good luck finding any of them on Netflix — most of them don't even seem to be available on DVD. Surely you guys use p2p too?... [more]

Ask post: which mozart recording to buy
Although not a complete recording, I really enjoyed Leif Ove Andsnes's concertos 17 and 23, even preferring him to the 2005 Brendel. He's also recorded 9 & 18, which I haven't heard yet.

Brendel is unsurpassed when it comes to Beethoven, Schubert or Liszt, but I've always found his Mozart a bit dull. Can anyone prove me wrong with better recordings?... [more]

Ask post: My German car is ruining my perfect American Date
Most german cars have a button on the stereo to turn it on even when the key isn't in the ignition. Big round power button. Even the cheap VW Polo I drive has that feature.

This shows a huge power button on both models.

Most students DIY this. The scanning quickly becomes almost as fast as photocopying. Modern OCR software adds a transparent text layer above the image, making proofreading unnecessary for most purposes.

Ask post: my dominant hand is no longer dominant. help!
My mother was in a bicycle accident as a child, and broke her right arm. In a week or so, she had learned how to write reasonably well with her left hand. Her sister is left-handed and children learn that sort of stuff quickly, so YMMV, but it is possible.

The Dvorak Keyboard takes abouth a month to learn, but requires far less hand movement, which could be less painful. There is also a one-handed version.... [more]

Ask post: Best movies of 2008 so far
IMDB's 2008 movies with a rating of more than 7.7. Tweaking the parameters is quite easy, for example if you want movies since 2007 with a rating of more than 7.8 and more than 800 votes. Tv=off disables tv series, ep=off disables tv episodes.

Ask post: What restrictions are there on mailing over-the-counter medicine from the United States to Japan?
Tylenol Extra Strength is just 500 mg of paracetamol, which will have the same strength all over the planet. The old Sudafed was just pseudoephedrine. The phenylephrine version is apparently not as effective.

I can't believe it's cheaper to send the branded version of such basic medicine from the US. Try asking for アセトアミノフェン (acetaminophen) and 塩酸プソイドエフェドリン (pseudoephedrine), see what that costs.

Most (Every ?) Mc Donald's in France has free wi-fi. IP over DNS seems to work over the open Neuf WiFi networks you see all over the place in cities. Your French friends could get 50 hours of dial-up internet for €15, or you could get free access and pay the telephone charges.

Our downstairs neighbours just had a daughter. When I'm up at night, I hear her cry and wake up her parents. Having kids is tough, and your kids don't deserve parents who are sick. They'll need you. Look after yourselves first, and go with #1 when you're better.

Capsaicin is what makes jalapeños spicy. It will dissolve in oily compounds (see Treatment after exposure), which is why people above have recommended whole milk or cream. This means you can use olive oil, butter, or anything reasonably fatty. Can you replace the Sprite with milk? Can you coat your mouth with butter before the bet?

The black ones pete0r links to aren't the silicone ones, they're new foam ones that replace the yellow ones. They're, in my experience, easier to clean and last longer. I've been using the ones in my ears on and off since September, cleaning them with hot water and soap every once in a while.
