Ask post: How to I make sure I come back to a relationship that isn't broken?
During my stint with a long distance relationship, we tried to talk on the phone for 20-30 minutes every day at around the same time. This seemed to work well since it didn't get in the way of what we were doing but was regular and grounding.

I would advise staying in legitimate touch with each others lives. Rather than sobbing about how you miss each other, try and tell him what you've done each day, who you've been spending your time with, where you're going for lunch... [more]

Ask post: Restaurants in Toledo
Bowling Green has a couple of nice restaurants - Easy Street as mentioned, and Sam-B's would be your bests bets.

The new activity in the area all tends to be in Maumee or Perrysburg.
There are a few good retaurants in Levi's Commons in Perrysburg, and a few more along West Dussel Drive in Maumee (I've heard good things about Mancy's Blue Water Grille)

If you wanted to stay in Toledo, Manhattans is a fun place, with good food, a fun... [more]

Ask post: My Cat Does Weird Things. Why?
Our cats are fairly young and we've been doing this most of their lives; so this may not entirely apply - but we've had good luck "Scruffing" them to cut their nails. One of us holds the cat dangling slightly by their scruff and supporting most of their weight with the other hand while the other of us clips.
If we don't dangle them enough they fight back - but if there is a bit of tension on the scruff, they submit.
We don't seem to get too many dagger-eyes... [more]

Ask post: California Family get-away ideas?
I think you'd do quite well for yourselves in the wine country. According to the Weather Channel, Sonoma will be warmer than San Diego or Santa Barbara next week.
I think we're just about to grape harvest season as well, so its probably quite pretty.

Napa is a lot better for hotels than Sonoma though.

Its not Icelandic, but try the grocery section in Ikea. They have all the weird Swedish fish products.

Granted this was 3 years ago now, but I used to live in Islington, and I've definitely bought tortillas at that very Sainsbury's. Somewhere towards the back and in the middle, near the rice I think.

Ask post: Text to Email
I'm a little late to the party; but with T-mobile you can send and receive email pretty easily via SMS. To send, you can use the SMS gateway 500. Check out this wiki which has pretty good instructions.

To receive, just have the email sent to yournumber@tmomail.net
For example, 5105551212@tmomail.net

Ask post: How written Deaf sounds?
Remember first of all that ASL (and this also applies to other sign languages) is not a literal interpretation of English. It is its own language with its own grammar and vocabulary. So when a signing Deaf person writes in English, it is a different language than when they sign - as though a native English speaker were writing in French for example.

So if there are any differences in written voice; its likely due to English not being a first language more than the writer being deaf.

Ask post: Help me find a new bedside HDTV.
If you have a Comcast box with DVI for a tuner, couldn't you just get a wide-screen LCD monitor? Not having a tuner generally brings the price down considerably.
You can get a 19" wide-screen LCD with DVI for around $200 I think. I don't have a specific recommendation though.

Ask post: Caught Between an HD Rock and a Hard Place...And a Hard Place
What I personally do is I have directv with an H20 for HD, and a DirecTivo (old hughes one 30gb) for my SD. Since the vast majority of what is on right now is not in HD, this serves me quite well. I give up the HD-DVR functionality for HD programs, and in exchange, I get the sweet Tivo for the other 97 percent of what I watch.

This keeps DirecTV happy, because I've got a newish HD box, and a 5LNB dish (and a single dish as well - not totally sure why - but the installer... [more]

Ask post: Enragement Ring
I got engaged about a year ago now; and while my fiancee and I were initially torn about diamonds and what it means to give an engagement ring, we ultimately decided to go with it and get a Canadian mined diamond to avoid some of the evils associated with it.

I personally found it a good step for me. The act of going and picking the ring, getting up the guts to ask, figuring out how to do it, etc. makes the whole thing very real. I feel like if I hadn't done all of this... [more]

Ask post: Oh where oh where have the hotels gone?
I've found HotelClub.com to be quite good for international bookings. I've used them for Europe, and Australia/New Zealand and had good luck.

Not all the hotels offer real time confirmations, but they tell you which are which.

Ask post: Is a one-way ticket to Europe my best option?
You may want to see if you can instead get a ticket from STA Travel - as they have lots of offices around England. They often offer Flexible fares; which you can change your return date - pending availability - for a very small fee; like about $30.

This way you could book the return leg for approximately when you'll be coming home, and just visit STA once there to make alterations to the itinerary.

I would recommend calling or stopping into an... [more]

Ask post: Cool places to stay a couple nights in San Francisco next week?
I enjoy staying at the SF Hilton and opting for the Executive floor rooms. This gives you access to their (44th floor?) lounge which has an absolutely amazing view of Downtown. The view from the rooms aren't bad either especially if you get a balcony.

It may not be quite what you're looking for though.

The W would certainly be the most convenient.

Ask post: Instead of going on my honeymoon, namely because I am recently and unfortunately single, I would like to take the time to treat myself to a vacation.
How about something kind of out in left field like to spend a week or two in a monastery. A lot of monasteries will let people (secular or not) stay for periods of time. You often live very simply, doing chores, being silent, spending a lot of time alone.
If this idea doesn't deeply depress you, it might be a good opportunity to spend some time being your own person.
Here is one that I have heard good things about.... [more]

Ask post: Small cat hair elimination device please.
I second the Shark, but I would specifically recommend the hand-held (SV736). it is cordless and has a powered brush attachment which really works well for cat hair. If you want to use it on hard wood, the brush attachment comes off, and it has a regular dust-buster-ish intake which works quite well. It also comes with a couple of other attachments, but I pretty much just use the power brush.

I had one of these a while back but left it when I moved out of state. I just... [more]

Ask post: Mid twenties, moving to London. Where should I live and what should I know?
The thing to remember about London is that it is really a series of interconnected towns. So each area of the city tends to be self contained.
For the huge night clubs and major tourist attractions, you probably need to go to central London; but you really can generally get most of the benefits wherever you are.

Also, people tend to love their neighborhood and look down at everywhere else; so take area recommendations with a teeny grain of salt.... [more]

Have you considered offsetting as opposed to planting? I believe that while planting trees is good, it isn't actually as effective from a global warming perspective as actually purchasing carbon credits in the same amount you are emitting?

Ask post: Picking GPS for Vehicle
I've enjoyed my Garmin c320 so far. I've had it for a few months. It doesn't speak street names, but does a good job of conveying when and where you're supposed to go. I've never had a problem not being able to keep track of what it wants - audio only.

The difference between the 320 and its sibling the c330 is that the 330 has built in storage while the 320 has an SD card and comes with the maps on a DVD. I opted for the latter and bought a 2gb SD card for fairly cheap -... [more]

Ask post: Looking for good Frankfurt Hotel
With the caveat that its been a couple of years since I stayed there, and all of this may have changed: I had a great experience with the Hotel Bristol. Its right near the Frankfurt Main train station (for good or bad) and its a very trendy modern hotel. The rooms and lobby were all very nice and they include a fantastic breakfast buffet.

Ask post: feet on the ground
I think the experience of going through screening is largely affected by your expectations of it. If you know exactly what is coming, and prepare for it, you are far less likely to have any problems.

I've traveled internationally and domestically a fair few times this year, and have never been hassled. I try to travel simply. I don't carry much on with me, I slip my shoes off when I get to the conveyor belt, make sure any metal items are in my carry on bag, and take my... [more]

Ask post: Doomed To Sit Out?
I've never heard of a seven year rule either. I very much doubt that one bad record would preclude admission to another university; although you would likely have to explain it - not avoid the subject. However, community college is an option - as mentioned above. Often times, if you have 2 years of community college, then you can transfer to a good 4 year school for your second two years with no questions asked about anything prior to your CC admission. This is often times the "clean... [more]

Ask post: Movie showtime sites?
Most movie listings - be they in the paper, internet, etc. all get their information from the theater/chain directly. So if the theater doesn't tell the source where all but movietickets.com gets their info, then they won't have it.
But that rare exception aside, they will usually all be consistent.

If you have a feeling that the listings are wrong though, I would start with the "official" movie website. They often will have a "showtimes"... [more]

How long are you looking to hold the stocks?
This wouldn't be for day trading; but when I was still in college I opened a sharebuilder dot com account (I think because they gave me frequent flyer miles or something).
This is a good way to invest small amounts because you can invest in dollar amounts rather than quantities of shares, and the commission for buying is only like $4. There are some downsides, but I've been pretty happy with it for accumulating small amounts.... [more]
