Ask post: Mr Cringe-a-lot
I disagree that it's just about excess empathy. It's also deep self-consciousness. So yes, you are able to put yourself in their position, but you are so excessively concerned with what others think of you, you're projecting it on to others. It's uptight.

I once went to an experimental-music show where a girl was screaming into the bell of a French horn and I had a feeling much like you describe. But I've since talked to experimental- and noise-music fans and the fact... [more]

Ask post: Nobody told me when I went on antidepressants that my brain might asplode.
I went off cold turkey from a way higher dose and had no problems at all. Of course I don't recommend it but it's a counterpoint to the many people with a cudgel against Effexor. Taper down by 37.5 every few days or so and you should be fine. Don't do this without asking your doctor, but you'll probably need the doctor to prescribe that dose anyway. (I can't imagine breaking caps up into four pieces so easily.)

I've been there a couple of times, for music shows (Hidden Cameras + Chinese Stars). It's grody with a capital O.

Ask post: Physical compliments from men: return them, or no?
Ooh, interesting. Responses are sure to vary greatly.

If someone compliments you, you are never obliged to give one back. In fact, sometimes doing that just seems phony. Accepting compliments gracefully is about the ability to enjoy the sentiment without any awkwardness or fear. This isn't a matter of gender or dating but just a general principle.

I can't even speak about relationships because it's been a very long time since I've been in one,... [more]

Just out of curiosity, what tests did he get? Did he have an ultrasound?

Ask post: I'm looking for a quiet and discreet place where awesome people gather.
Nowhere.

Just nowhere.

Too much anonymity and masking and you're not truly getting things off your chest and you're unable to form trusting relationships. Too much sharing and you're risking recognition. This is the reason I have never been able to journal online in any satisfying way. On top of that you always, always leave a trail of identifying information.

Get a therapist, or make real-life friends. Honestly, I feel... [more]

Sub, all over Canada. Never any of these others (grinder, hoagie, hero) unless it's fancy and then it's a panini.

I'm pretty sure the name came before the chain. IOW, the chain was riffing off the foodstuff. Where I grew up there was also a chain called Captain Sub, and there's another chain called Mr. Sub.

Ask post: How can I fulfill my fantasy?
Well, this doesn't sound like a far-fetched idea at all. There are lots of exhibitionists out there. Create a new webmail account and use it to place an ad on Craigslist's "Casual Encounters" section, explaining all your terms in detail. Correspond with respondents until you feel you've got an idea of what they're about. Don't be pressured by the "let's do this tonight" people who will try to rush you, and don't feel the need to send or demand pictures before you're... [more]

chunking express said: "FYI: there are lots of people who just blogged about random shit and got noticed: kottke, dooce, etc. Your site needs to be interesting."

Well, five or more years ago before every jerk on the block had a blog it was much, much easier to gain a following. And Dooce got a LOT of publicity for getting fired for her site.

Honestly I don't think there's any magic to it -- a lot of the biggest... [more]

Well, there are lots of general recommendations (restaurants, etc) in past threads -- it's a popular topic! I can recommend but I'm a vegetarian so that's all I know.

Get good poutine at Patati Patata -- grab a tiny table if you can, or take it to go and sit in Parc Jeanne-Mance, just three blocks west.

Oh, the international fireworks festival is also on during that time. You can go right down to La Ronde (the theme park where the fireworks are launched from) or you can listen along at 105.7 FM. They're synchronized to the music, it's quite a thing. There are other events on the island as well.

There's also the tango festival with a couple of free open-air concerts.

And since you'll be up toward Tremblant, there's also the blues festival there.... [more]

Oh! And last post -- the best market in Montreal is (IMO) Jean-Talon market. It's lovely just to look around and people-watch on a nice day. There are also a few little food stands like crêpes, seafood, juice, samosas & paella, an amazing bakery... It's really an awesome place to spend a couple of hours.

I think the pay-as-you-go phones are so cheap because they know that everyone ends up paying way more than they expect for the (expensive) airtime on those plans.

Ask post: A garden enclosed is my sister
I would be very careful with the armchair diagnoses. A lot of the characteristics you've named can be related to various mood disorders, and I think you should leave the psychiatry to her psychiatrist. It sounds like you haven't really spoken with her seriously about the problem directly. If I were you I'd consider having an earnest talk with her saying that you don't believe her current treatment is effective and encouraging her to return to her doctor to tell him/her as much. Offer to go with... [more]

Advice to drop her like a hot potato and let her hit bottom is irresponsible when the sister is suicidal. It is important to recognize the distinction between being caring and supportive and being an enabler and rescuer.

Ask post: My Dawg vs Dog
I know you say you're confrontational but I think you should be more persistent with them. I mean sit down, serious talk, in person type thing. When the dog isn't an issue (for example, not when they're calling you to ask you for help.) The dog's well-being is at least as important as that. Don't let them just say "Oh, well we hang out on the weekend..." Follow up with dates they've been away. Show pictures of the mess when you've dropped by. Tell them that you feel they are neglecting... [more]

Ask post: How can I stop caring what other people think or might think about me?
This is the kind of thing that CBT works perfectly for. I've posted about it before, but essentially if you work through the Mind Over Mood workbook -- preferably with a therapist but give it a try on your own -- you can learn new patterns of thinking. Basically this involves at first thinking back to recent worries and dissecting them in chart form to come up with other ways you could think about them, and then gradually incorporating that self-auditing into real-time situations. It can be... [more]

Ask post: Inability to care for loved ones through simple daily contact – can it at all be excused as a ‘sweet handicap’?
You know, the way you've written (or perhaps over-written) this question, I can't really figure out what the question is here.

It sounds to me like you need to decide what it is you want in a relationship -- do you really want someone who phones you five times a day? I don't but to each his own -- and then figure out if your current partner gives you what you need and want. If he doesn't, then perhaps you need to move on.

Ask post: Help me replace my company's google calendars!
I use webcalendar. I won't lie -- it has some shortfalls, but I believe the next full version will be solid. The developers are pretty responsive on the SourceForge message boards and re feature requests, and I've been able to do a lot of customization by virtue of knowing PHP. I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out for me.

It's not 2.0/Ajaxy, though.

I remember the feeling you describe very well. It took me about two weeks for the brutal fatigue to ease off. I was really dead tired for that long. Try to maintain a normal schedule if possible, but be kind to yourself if you find it difficult.

I still feel (seven months later) less wakeful and more sluggish than I ever did on Adderall though. I'm sure this is the way I always felt before, but I enjoyed feeling "normal" for the period I was on the drug and... [more]

It's hanging outside in the sun right now but it seems to be nice and clean again, even around the bottom seam. I kind of don't want to put it back in the shower now.

Ask post: Six hours in Vancouver airport
Well I'll go against the tide here and say that six hours is enough time to do something outside the airport. I've never flown internationally out of YVR but have flown domestically. The airport is not crazy far from the city proper and it's not that huge a city to begin with -- assuming half an hour each way into/back from Vancouver and two hours through security that's still three hours to do something, even if it's just to go to a mall or whatever.

I think you've gotta make your own friends, separate from your partner's. This is always a healthy practice -- you never know, after all, what can happen. You definitely sound like you'd be happier if you had some friends you relate to, which is perfectly understandable. You can't change the friends you've got but you can make new ones.

Incidentally I have this problem in a big way, except I'm 30-something and they're 20-somethings. I didn't think the different between... [more]

Ask post: How do I get people to not antagonize my phobia?
I think this calls for a one-on-one conversation with the people you think should know, separate from any incident. You can't expect people to understand your phobia -- it is, after all, irrational by definition -- if you don't sit down and explain openly what it's about. So start with the person you had this recent issue with, and talk to all the people closest to you individually.
