Hot, soapy water should help that.

C'est pas "étrange"? Aussi, au Québec, la plupart de temps on dit "Ils permettent pas". (On peut omettre le "ne".)

(Mais chui pas une linguiste, ou d'ailleurs une francophone.)

Not mine in Quebec! But outside of that, probably yes.

By which I mean in casual conversation, same as T-V, which I understand is quite a bit broader here than in international French.

MeTa post: A SHIT OBIT
The last two days on Mefi have got me thinking that this is maybe not so much a good place for me to hang out. It has begun to feel toxic and angry.

MeTa post: "Wow, look at the Boobies!"
I can't believe how vehemently some people are defending that crappy post. And to be honest I'm more offended by this thread than by that. Now not only do we have a conversation where we're ogling titties but we're telling women we're bored by their complaints about it. That's class.

I like your stuff a lot of the time, not_on_display, but you totally shit the bed on this one.

Anyway, I've thrown my flag into the queue, for what it's worth.

Oh, and PS. maybe the reason women are using the term "boyzone" instead of "sexism" is because it softens the impact. Because that's what women often feel we have to do.

This MeTa thread has lowered my opinion of this community. I'm sorry about that.

Let me tell you about the delicious plate of potatoes fried in butter (with fresh herbs from my balcony) that I just made myself. Seriously, nobody makes home fries/hash browns/fried potatoes better than this.

I'm definitely not asking for 10 posts per page. I'd be happy with 300 per page, but even 500 would be an improvement.
posted to MetaTalk by loiseau at 10:19 PM on July 1, 2008
So, about the pagination for huge threads... that's a no, huh?
posted to MetaTalk by loiseau at 9:29 AM on July 8, 2008
Sigh.

It was a reasonable request, no?

I have a personal interest in things like Internet community moderation and wanted to follow the BB thread but can't reload 2MB+ pages. I have a bandwidth cap plus my computer can't handle it.

MeTa post: 5 minutes of great reading.
I tend to think that if someone gets freaked out easily maybe the break from the site is exactly what they need anyway. It resets the ol' perspective-o-meter.

MeTa post: Ugh, all RIGHT, mom, I get it.
I don't mind as much when people keep posting because they have an original contribution to make. But just posting "nthing no" or whatever is beyond pointless.

I am willing to concede that this fact resides in pet-peeveland though.

Favouriting answers can be a form of agreement. That's what I often do when I agree with a comment and don't have anything new to bring to the thread.

posted to MetaTalk by loiseau at 4:26 AM on June 29, 2008
Y'all really don't need to worry so much. Post editing is possible on the vast majority of Web message boards and the world hasn't stopped turning yet. There will be abuses only on the scale that there have always been abuses of the site, which because our moderators are so fantastic, is apparently little.

MeTa post: Account Closing Protocol
Another reason people want their account disabled or deleted is because they are trying to make a "fuck off" statement to other users or to the site's management. I can't think of an example of that sort of flouncing off of Metafilter but on a site I run I've had those kinds of demands. If you won't delete their account some people feel that you've got something on them somehow, or they feel they're not being given freedom from the site, sort of like that Seinfeld joke that in order to... MeTa post: Weekly World MeFi
I actually in some way care about this story on the level that I care about any celebrity I've never met -- and I think the subject matter could be a good post. It's mostly that a potentially good post was wrapped around an utter turd of a source that bothered me. I think this is a case where we could've waited for an actual credible source to arise to make a post about it. I mean, the post a couple of weeks ago speculating that Paul Newman had cancer was deleted because it... [more]

MeTa post: Montreal Meetup
Oh hello!

I think I can come, though if so I will be leaving at 9:00 to go to a show. But I'm scared. What's the Lodge like? I'm not so much a fan of that part of the Main (I feel I served my time in years of living at de Bullion/Laval and Prince-Arthur).

Zadcat is right about meet-ups -- I think direct messaging needs to be involved for people to come. Last time posting a thread just didn't do the trick. We need to be eased into the idea with a... [more]

UGH. That sucks! My "I have 45 minutes before I should leave" nap turned into six hours... I woke up at 12:30.

I'm sorry this didn't work out -- I'm not familiar with the venue so I can't even imagine why it wouldn't be open.

I do think meetups here in Montreal require strong leadership, lots of lead time, and much massaging, possibly with warm aromatherapy oils.

MeTa post: Asked for X, got Y (where X equals help and Y equals grief)
My observation in situations like these is that people here get cranky or come here to blow off steam and take any opportunity to act dense and be contrary.

This means that if the poster had asked, "Okay, I paid for an item and received something different. I'm just going to make my own blocks -- how do I do that?" she'd get a truckload of responses telling her that idea is stupid and she needs to stand up to the company and demand a refund on the basis that... When my brother and I were kids in the 70s we used rather inexplicably call figurines like these "Jokes". Once my brother got me in trouble because I tried to flush a Joke down the toilet and thereby plugged it.

My point is... okay, well I didn't actually have a point but I felt like telling that story.

I own a hacksaw! Actually two, because I forgot I had one and bought a second. They're cheap, like less than $10 CAD.

I also own wrenches and screwdrivers and measuring tapes and a hammer e&, but no clamps, and my sanders are just sandpaper blocks.

I'm 33 and I've lived alone since I was 17. I'm desperately lonely and frequently talk to the cats and the TV but at least I can put on my own bike basket and build my own window screen. It's something...
