MeTa post: Where's my question?
P.S. I posted it today.
posted to MetaTalk by reenum at 10:31 AM on October 7, 2008
I see the reason, and it makes sense. I'll make sure to ask these sorts of questions in another forum. I did not mean to be contentious. I was just curious as to the reason for deletion.

Ask post: Which anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are best at detecting and removing spyware and viruses respectively and why?
I've used Avast! in conjunction with AdAware and Spybot for a few years now with no issues.

Ask post: Should I tell someone they will be fired?
@theichibun: Yesterday, my supervisor explicitly told me she's been trying to get this secretary fired for a solid month. She also called another one of the secretaries and told her that that secretary will be moving to my soon to be ex-secretary's desk.

It was made explicitly clear that the only thing this supervisor is waiting for is the go-ahead from the firm's partners.

I've been using Google Notebooks for this.

You can set up different notebooks for different topics and then clip and add things to your heart's desire. Plus, it's accessible everywhere.

Ask post: The ideas are all around, floating away...
@carbide: Here are a few of my unfinished story ideas:

1. A slacker college student decides to go to a fictional Third World country to instigate a coup and become the president.

2. A senator hires a political consultant to help him with his dating life.

3. Two men are on a train. One is dying, the other is immortal.

I've got these ideas for stories, but they never turn out well.... [more]

Ask post: Should I jump ship from my Vanguard mutual funds account?
If you've invested in an index fund, then I'd keep it in there. Even though things are bleak right now, the market will rebound.

If this is money you needed fairly soon, then you can pull it out, but that $700 is gone forever if you do so.

For short term investments, I always go with a CD or a high interest savings account. It's much easier to pull the money out of those and you have more risk protection.

Ask post: Dry cleaners destroyed dress, refusing refund
I second taking them to small claims court. At the very least, you'll have the case heard by the judge.

I would also read their disclaimers on the claim ticket and see if your wife's dress falls under any of them.

Ask post: Help with fantasy football league
I think you could do this on Yahoo. The system will let you begin a season for H2H as long as there are an even number of teams in the league.

I echo the suggestion for the two of you to join a public league. It'll provide a taste of competition for you and your GF that wouldn't be there if the league was only consisting of the two of you.

Ask post: Get rich quick, repent at leisure?
I knew a guy back in law school who did something along these lines. He had graduated from the university we went to and was going back to Indonesia (one of the grey countries on the list).

He charged a PS2 and other small electronics and clothes on his debit card and other credit cards. He then maxed the cards out at the duty free shops in Singapore. When he got to Indonesia, he called all the companies and reported the cards stolen.

Ask post: How to get my posts from Wordpress.com to Blogger?
@ddaavvviidd: Alas, I have already tried exporting an .xml file of my Wordpress.com blog to Blogger. For some reason, Wordpress XML doesn't play nice with Blogger.

@theichibun: I've been to a few of those sites and tried those methods, but none of them seem to work for me.

Oh well, it was worth a shot. My old blog will have to live in Wordpress unless I decide to manually import it.

Please keep the suggestions coming, everyone.

Ask post: How can I focus while reading?
I'll venture to say that if your thoughts are somewhere else totally, then you must not be all that interested in the book. I find this happens to me as well sometimes, but never when I'm actually enjoying and into what I'm reading.

Ask post: Get rid of urge to call ex
I've had a similar sentiment to call an ex. Whenever I have this urge, I think of the really bad times we had and the fact that she was very emotionally unbalanced.

If you feel like talking to this guy, think about how he screwed you over. If this doesn't do the trick, then write him a letter saying what you would want to say to him in the phone call. Then, whenever you get the urge to talk to him, pull the letter out and look at it. Add to it if you want.... [more]

Ask post: More.. a little more... a little m... no, too much. Too much! ACK!
I was in a long distance situation, and found that communication was the key. I've also been in the clingy boyfriend role. I loved my ex dearly, but she felt suffocated.

The thing is, you need to have a sit down with him. Talking every single day isn't necessary. But, he might be clingy because he feels like you have a more interesting life than him or that he will lose you.

You may need to provide him with some reinforcement that he's the one... [more]

Ask post: I want a cat -- but should I? But I really want.
I'd say that if you see a long term future with the BF, then getting this cat is out of the question. There is no reason to value an animal over someone you love.

Also, have you looked into other pets? I've heard a lot of people keep birds.

Ask post: How much is too much?
Personally, I think it's too much debt if I cannot pay the balance off at the end of each month. If the credit card is used as a loan that you pay off each month in full, then there is some value in using one.

From a practical standpoint, I think if your debt exceeds your monthly take home income, it's too much.

Now, think about what you said: This is a personal project which will not earn you money back. That sounds to me like you want to spend... [more]

Ask post: Help me help me
I agree with the advice above. There is always an adjustment period when beginning a new job or internship.

If after 2 weeks, you still have little idea of what's going on, you might want to go a supervisor and ask how you can help out.

Nthing Time Traveler's Wife.

I haven't seen Upstate by Kalisha Buckhanon in this thread, so I will put it forth.

If you are a fan of Rumpole, then the books read by Bill Wallis are a real treat.

Finally, audiobook fans should check out Audiofile magazine. It's wholly dedicated to audiobooks and they have a pretty exhaustive reviews section.

Ask post: how do you feel about an innocent admirer
I would be flattered. It's a big ego boost when a nice, attractive woman with no obvious flaws is attracted to me.

On a side note, I have a longtime friend who recently told me she has a thing for me. I've told her flat out that I'm not interested in her romantically. We still talk, but there is some awkwardness for me when I talk to her. In the back of my mind, I'm always wondering whether she'll bring up her crush on me again while we're talking.... [more]

Ask post: How to talk to my friend about his arranged marriage?
I echo what a lot of people say here. It is his life and he has the choice to say no.

I'm from a culture where arranged marriages are common, and I have made it clear to my parents that I am not going that route. It doesn't make them happy, but it's my life.

Sorry to say, but if he doesn't have the courage to stand up for his own choice in such an important matter, he deserves any unhappiness he feels.

One of the best books to read on this subject is Getting To Yes. You don't need to be hard-nosed in negotiation. It's a matter of identifying what is important to you and to the other party and then brokering an agreement that is satisfactory to both parties.
