Why won't my MBP wake up?
A couple of things I would check if this happened to me:
Does it happen in a fresh user account?
Are you using hardware suspend or software suspend (the Safe Sleep "hibernation" mode)--perhaps accidentally by testing out a widget like Deep Sleep?
Have you done any RAM tests?

On the meaning of "off" on the page.
"Off" does not mean off-screen. That's abbreviated as (O.S.)--or (O.C.) for off-camera.
This example would mean to me that we see Omar on camera while Bookhouse says "This guy is lying."
I don't think there is a universal meaning to underlined action.

What's the story with Aqua Mira Water Treatment drops?
Chlorine dioxide does have a public health statement about its dangers but it's an accepted way to treat municipal water in the US and is almost certainly the best for emergency use in areas away from clean water.
The only Aqua Mira bottles I've ever seen were each one ounce, and you used the same number of drops out of each bottle to activate the mixture. They should therefore generally run out at the same time.
I'm not sure what you mean about... [more]

needed: mail list manager db for Mac
Anyone reasonably proficient in Filemaker could build this in a few minutes; for a beginner it might take a day. Then you would also have the benefit of something that could have features altered or added as needed.
You don't need anything more complicated than that if you only have 2000 records and a handful of criteria to track.

(By the way, Bento DOES allow you to add any sort of "checkbox" type criteria you want; it should be even simpler to deal with than Filemaker since it walks you through everything. I haven't used it, though, so I don't know how well it handles import and export.)

Connect Canon HG10 video to Mac os X
The description of this video camera on Amazon makes it seem like it uses a separate memory card for still photos (instead of the built-in hard drive). Can you take the card out and read it with an ordinary USB memory card reader? You can pick one up that reads dozens of different card types for under twenty bucks.

Why are American Chinese takeout restaurants so similar?
I know I read an article about the phenomenon of regional American Chinese food restaurants and the indentured-servitude-like working conditions, but I can't find it now.
Here's a blog post that hits upon some of the ideas and links to a few similar articles:
illegal Chinese immigrants...are deployed as wait-persons, bus people or cooks to an entire network of Chinese restaurants all over the East Coast and Midwest via a handful of “work centers” operating... [more]

My string was the same as iconomy's. Generally my strategy is to pick the phrase that's most distinctive yet has the least possibility for misinterpretation (i.e. I wouldn't bother with leftover vs left over, stone-cold vs stone cold, and I wouldn't string multiple lines together unless they were so generic that I needed them all to weed out the results. And if I did have to use multiple phrases, they would each get individual quotes).

Importing Excel spreadsheet data into to Word
Do you have to use Excel and Word? Can you use Access instead?
This strikes me as one of the classic points where the things you want to do strain the boundaries of what spreadsheets are for. You might be better off storing your data in a database, where you can build any reporting structures you like.

Uninsured and unfocused
My understanding as an insured layperson is that the "pre-existing condition" caveat generally applies to your ability to get health insurance on your own that you pay for yourself. Generally speaking, group policies in a corporate setting won't deny you coverage for a pre-existing condition like needing medication for ADHD. And once you're "in," even if you leave that job you can remain insured/insurable via COBRA or new insurance at a new job and that's when... [more]

Cupcake method/recipe/mix recommenations?
Rose Levy Beranbaum is amazing but the Cake Bible can be a little intimidating to a novice. The end result will be spectacular but that book gives me agita just thinking about the precision of the directions.
So my pick would be Barefoot Contessa's Coconut Cupcakes. These are the most amazing cupcakes I have ever eaten and the recipe is really straightforward. If you don't like coconut, don't worry—the cupcake itself is a "plain" buttermilk cake that's... [more]

What influences do you come from?
I haven't heard that Helium song in ages but I loved it when it came out. Off the top of my head you could try Metric, who aren't scared of a disco drum but might be sometimes be more tuneful than you're looking for. Or the Knife, who are much more over into the electronic side but have a similar dirty aesthetic.
(I don't think critics were comparing that particular Helium song to the Fall, btw...it's more likely they were talking about Mary Timony's almost arbitrary... [more]

The systems you're calling "all in one" systems actually generally have extremely robust templating that would allow you to build your template entirely from scratch—it's just that their marketing right now is more heavily in favor of prebuilt, customizable templates that take some of the work away from writers who would prefer something that lets them Just Get Writing.
The technical advantage of using WordPress or MT would be that they've already done... [more]

How can I learn the proper way to deal with permissions on a Windows server when I am clearly a n00b?
Thanks for the advice so far. Sorry about my terminology. I'm sure it's part of the problem. There is a folder on the server called "office". It has sharing turned on and the sharing permissions are set to allow read/write to Everyone.
Within "office" is a folder called "personnel"; I would like to restrict access so only people in the Personnel security group can access it, its contents, and its subfolders. If a user in the Personnel group... [more]

Sorry for the delay in returning to this question, I didn't mean to leave you all hanging. The way the "advanced" dialog boxes and checkmarks for inheritance interact seems needlessly confusing to me. But I have now successfully set these folders the way we'll need them!
Thank you all for your help. I'm marking a bunch of these as best answer as I kind of combined bits and bobs from all of you.

The best blog I know of on the topic of book design is India, Ink., but it's more about the day-to-day workflow of typesetting and editing than an analysis or overview of changes in the industry. Still, could be a good starting point or contact for further research.

Keep in mind that this is not the best day to buy a Mac: WWDC starts June 9 and there will probably be new models (or at least updated processors/pricing) released that week. Wait a bit longer and you'll see all the "old" models go down a bit more in price.

publsher to pdf?
In my experience, it's not that the PDF has somehow shrunk, it's that Adobe Reader is set to shrink the print out so the "whole" PDF fits within the current printable margins. That means that a print from Reader about 94% percent of actual size. Assuming you've used normalish margins in your original publication, try telling Adobe Viewer not to resize anything in the Print dialog box.

Self, Blogger does allow editing of stylesheets. But looking at the list of Blogger tags, there are "per post" and "per date" footer but no "per post but not per date" footer. Software/instructions to make a photo/music slideshow?
I recall finding this easier to do in Motion Pictures, which you may have if you have Roxio Toast, because it didn't tie up the CPU with rendering until I was finished setting up all the durations and transitions.
This was before the latest (completely rewritten/redesigned) version of iMovie so this may now be a moot point. But it's something else to look at if iMovie doesn't end up being right for you.

The Incredible Shrinking Image
Your math seems a little suspect. If your image is 5000 pixels wide and you print it out so it's 25 inches wide, that's a resolution of 200 pixels per inch. 5000 divided by 25 equals 200.
Higher pixels per inch will not render your print illegible; laser printers commonly print at 600 or 1200 pixels per inch and we're all perfectly happy using them. Now if your writing is only, say, 12 PIXELS high in your source image, then it's going to be 1/16" tall in your... [more]

Ah, yes, you don't want to "resample image" if your goal is preserving the image quality. With "resample image" turned off, Photoshop keeps all your pixels intact and just tells the output device or other image-viewing program what the DPI should be--the data in the image actually remains the same, which is what you want.
How are you getting this output, by the way?
