MeTa post: It's a shame a derail can get a good post on cervixen deleted.

MeTa post: Why do people make a post to say they've sent a mefi mail?
Why do people ask rhetorical questions?

Mmm, mustard. Just keep that fucking "miracle fruit" out of this thread before it ruins everything.

MeTa post: A Dude's Perspective
Does anyone recognize the song playing at the end of that NPR piece?

The song right at the end is a cover of the Stones' "Dead Flowers," and it sure sounds like Townes Van Zandt singing it, but I'm not sure about that.

You mean that whenever you re-click a thread, MetaFilter doesn't lay out fresh new guest towels and send you a big fruit basket? Huh, figured that was a standard feature.

Ooooo, mango!

Pie. Pie and foursquare. Now yer talkin' -- only it has to be apple pie with a slice of cheese melted on top, and you have to use the regulation red rubber foursquare ball.

MeTa post: Print Stylesheet for Mefi?
languagehat: And the first rule is: no two-letter zipcode abbreviations.

OK, consider me spooked out. Just last night as I was tucking myself into bed, I was musing nostalgically and inexplicably over the old three- and four-letter state abbreviations: "Ou sont les Ill., Cal., Mich., Fla. d'antan?"

MeTa post: Is the contact form bugged out?
They're selling postcards of the banning
They're painting the Pepsi blue
The parameters are full of exceptions
And cortex is here too
There goes the blind moderator
They've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the pitchfork
A fish is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless
They need somewhere to go

MeTa post: Not funny.
The quality of the FPP notwithstanding, I'm not sure why a somewhat chaotic comment thread is necessarily a problem of nightmarish dimensions. I mean, back when we had the massive sexism MeTa discussions, the point was raised repeatedly that when the fucking puerile "gimme gimme sweater puppy funbags" brigade shows up in threads, then not only do they need to be flagged with extreme prejudice, but the Mefites who object to their bullshit need to call them on the carpet about it right... I loved bagelboy until I learned he was in the habit of keeping pie in the, eek, fridge. But if you warm up a slab and melt a slice of cheddar over the top of it, all is forgiven.

MeTa post: From the green to the blue!
What's the big hurry? Some of us were born to FPP, some have FPPing thrust upon us, and the rest of us should just leave well enough alone. Hadjiboy and madamjujujive, for example, are in the first group. I'm in the last. Not everyone needs to post in order for MeFi to be a vibrant community, and in fact, I wish more people resisted the temptation. More /= better.

MeTa post: Look, Ma, I'm full of piss and vinegar
Jesus, it'd save so much time if we could just have a standardized "Mad Lib" type fill-in-the-blank template on hand to use for the MeTa post that inevitably ensues when yet another unreflecting premature eulogization obitfilter FPP inevitably turns into yet another battle for the between the "you may not speak ill of the dead" and "you must speak ill of the dead" contingents.

There have been at least a few instances where the second post is kept and the first crappy one is deep-sixed. And by god, when I'm elected Empress, I'll blast every successive Me First! obitfilter post with my DeathRay Sceptre until a decent one shows up.

MeTa post: Use someone else's words
I'm glad you brought this up as a point for discussion because it quietly bugs me (and probably plenty of pedantic academics like me who are all persnickety about ethical use of source material) every time I see it. Maybe this thread will serve as a reminder to people to exercise a little care and not just copy-paste quotation-chunks without some basic quote indicator.

But seriously, if I had had any sudden MeFi-inspired epiphanies about major values or viewpoints, I would tend to distrust them. I'm old; on most issues I care about, I've considered all the major rational and ethical arguments already, and there probably aren't going to be too many new ones -- although incremental additions of empirical info and anecdata [love that word] on various sides certainly help me to see new perspectives in a way that is probably shifting my views. Sort of like plate... [more]

MeTa post: Mefimail -- the other, better metatalk
Yeah, but what if we want to arbitrarily run up a trainwreck thread to a thousand comments? This is not a feature of Mefimail.

Yes, but I have a feeling garlic's MeMailbox capacity is currently being stress-tested, so there's that.

MeTa post: Should we FPP the Obama speech?
I just keep thinking, when was the last time any candidate for president got up in front of the cameras and just told the straight truth, and kept telling it for half an hour?

You said it, brother. Ever since I voted in my first Presidential election in (god help me) 1980, I have been whinily repeating this mantra: "Just for once, I just want to hear some candidate stand up and tell us the fucking facts and speak the fucking truth about any... [more]

MeTa post: Sans quoi?
I've been following her story on AskMe for a while because it won my sympathy

This is why that thread should be deleted regardless of whether sansgras is for real or not: AskMe is not for storytelling or constructing one's very own snowflaky telenovela; it's for asking and answering specific questions. Sometimes extended narrative is required in order to provide context, but all too often, it's just attention whoring logorrhea.

This is hilarious. MeFi, the self-proclaimed home of lefty atheist recyclying freakazoid off-the-grid Dan Savage alternaculture, gets one whiff of consenting grown adults choosing to form interpersonal and domestic arrangements with non-Ward-and-June dimensions, and blammo! the joint morphs into a Southern Baptist Convention picnic.

Inside this one circle is the sum total of humanity. They're all having various kinds of sex.

That's either hell on earth or total bliss. I'm not sure which.

Neither, really, it's just regular life, just another permutation within your big non-Venn diagram.

For instance, I don't eat brussels sprouts either. I mean, I've had them in the past, they're not totally unpleasant, I'm not anti-brussels sprouts, I don't go out of my way to avoid them, and I'm thrilled that other people enjoy them.... [more]

MeTa post: FPPs posts that are conclusive should be based on evidence.
You have to love that this complaint about "materially changing conclusions" and lack of "intellectual rigor" and questionable "factoids" is in reference to an FPP on the subject of economic and fiscal prognostication. Next we'll be objecting to the lack of scientific method in phrenology and Ouija board threads.

MeTa post: LOLMORMONS
As ND¢ noted in the Ledger MeTa thread, these instances are a function of crappy single-link BreakingDeathNewsObitFilter posts in general -- although obviously the religious angle makes it worse here. If people would take a few fucking minutes (or days) to assemble a thorough set of links with multiple, varying assessments of the corpse's life and legacy, then at least the mean-spirited quips would be drowned out by actual comments. But no, it's all about rushing to be FIRSTGHOUL! or express... [more]

The problem with those analogies is that Muslims do not define themselves as Christians but as something different, and Christians don't define themselves as Jews.

Mormons do define themselves as Christians; it's outsiders from older denominations (many of which were also considered unChristian or heretical by the Christian establishment in their own infancies) who label LDS as non-Christian.
