Ask post: I'm experiencing auditory hallucinations when waking.
I've also had that happen to me on occasion. No big deal. (IANAD)

Ask post: One word for music and memory association?
I think reminiscence might be a bit closer to what you're looking for than nostalgia.

Nostalgia generally refers to something you look back to and yearn for, but you can have negative emotions associated with the past too. You can look back and be glad you're far away from that time, while you relive the (negative) emotions brought on by the music.

Of course, neither of these applies to music specifically, but I think it's pretty well... [more]

Ask post: Why does my DVD-ROM suddenly hate me?
Similar thing happened to a friend recently, also on a Dell Inspiron. In her case, the drive itself was hosed.
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 2:36 PM on April 2, 2008
Playing a DVD is a more intense operation for your drive than playing an audio CD. So, box is right that not having the same problem while playing an audio CD does not at all rule out the drive being on its way out.

By the way, the DVD drive on your laptop should be completely modular, meaning you can take it out yourself just by pushing a button on the computer, so replacing this thing isn't even going to require a trip to the computer repair shop. Just order the part.

Ask post: I want to make barfi!
No personal experience with it, but the vast majority of the recipes linked from the wikipedia page you've provided do not call for khoya. Also, have you read this or this?

p.s. It sounds really yummy, mind checking back in after you make this and letting us know what kind you made and how it turned out?

Ask post: My socks!
A recommendation from the other thread you linked that is applicable to the sign-posting part of your question:

Rather than writing it off, put a letter under everyone's door (or in the laundry room) describing the articles and asking them to check their laundry for them as you're sure it was a simple mistake. Little lies are good here - it gives parent's of teens doing stupid things an easy out. And now everyone will be looking for the clothing and have your

Ask post: Do people react differently to information from those who are attractive vs. those who have expertise?
Sounds like you're overthinking it with all the attractiveness stuff and the roommate really just has a crush on you. He's overtly nice to the boyfriend so he doesn't look like the bad guy when boyfriend figures out what is going on and says something about it ("Obviously I can't have a crush on you, look how nice I am to your boyfriend! He's just imagining things.") The "we got drunk and he told me how attractive he thinks I am" is pretty much a dead giveaway in my... [more]

Nitrates and Nitrites?

(you'll have to search the first page for nitrate to find the relevant portion)

After posting my comment and reading your post again (I missed "anti-caking agent" the first time through), perhaps you're referring to talc? It is known to cause respiratory problems, although I don't see anything about headache.
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 2:36 PM on March 12, 2008
Have you had your blood pressure checked? If you have hypertension, the salt in the various things you mention could be giving you a headache.

Ask post: Having a problem with screen blanking in Fluxbuntu.
My laptop does something similar in Debian. I don't have a solution for you, but on mine, I can get the screen to come back on by switching to a virtual terminal and back (ctrl-alt-f1 and then ctrl-alt-f7)

Ask post: Solve the pattern: Patrick O'Brian, Alan Furst, Neal Stephenson... who comes next?
Thirding Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell by Susanna Clarke.

Mine may be overly obvious suggestions but here they are anyway:

Foucault's Pendulum, by Umberto Eco (smart, fun)
The Amber Chronicles, by Roger Zelazny (fun, well-researched world)
Dune and sequels, by Frank Herbert (fun, very well-researched world)... [more]

Ask post: Yo beef is so fat, when it goes to the beach, the tide comes in.
Seconding drain with a sieve. When I was in college I used the tilt pan/spoon method because I didn't own a sieve...

Also, what ssg said. Seriously, the taste is just as good and it's not much more expensive to get leaner beef. You could also try dark meat ground turkey, which I find is a perfectly acceptable substitute, but you may not.
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 4:00 PM on February 5, 2008
p.s. my grandmother stores the fat like you do, she uses old plastic containers which she keeps in the freezer until full, then throws away
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 4:02 PM on February 5, 2008
with hot water running outside the colander to dilute the fat

One word of warning regarding that idea- if you flush the grease down the drain with hot water, I've read that doing that keeps the grease liquid until it's further down the pipe where it can re-solidify and cause a blockage. I've never had that problem myself, but it's something to consider.
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 4:04 PM on February 5, 2008
In Britain, you can get flat, semicircular strainer-lids that you place on top of a pan like a lid and use to drain off the fat. I've yet to see them sold in the US, though.

We do have them here. They sell them pretty much anywhere they sell cookware.

I should mention: I have one.
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 6:49 PM on February 5, 2008
I'm obviously looking in the wrong places, or perhaps I just don't know the right terminology

RSVP calls it a crescent strainer. MIU calls it a pour off sieve. Tops just calls it a pot strainer. There are also variations.

Given the variety of the names, I'm not surprised that it's difficult to figure out exactly what to call these things when looking for them in the store.... [more]

Ask post: Why would a gas station remove the hold-open lever on the gas nozzle?
the hold open with just gush and gush while you are not there

Is that really the case (serious question)? I had thought those things were designed to shut off under those conditions. Have you actually seen that happen?
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 3:35 PM on February 5, 2008
(I admit that it seems like common sense that it would gush all over the pavement, but I hadn't ever given it much conscious thought, and just assumed there was some sort of mechanism to stop that from happening)
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 3:40 PM on February 5, 2008
It's a mechanical device, mechanical devices have been known to fail.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Sure, they are certainly subject to failure, but I was wondering if there was any sort of mechanism in place to try to stop that from happening. I suppose your anecdote answers that with a "probably not."
posted to Ask Metafilter by nzero at 3:41 PM on February 5, 2008
Seriously? You've never let it just run before?

Er, wfrgms you may have lost the thread of the conversation (or I may be misunderstanding you). The question was not regarding whether the pump would shut off if left in the gas tank (which mechanism is explained in detail here), but rather whether it would shut off automatically if it fell out onto the pavement.

Ask post: apartment lease renewal
Thanks everyone for the great replies.

To answer a few questions:

1) Am I dealing with a rental company, or a person?

The property is owned by a company, landlord is a person.

2) Have I asked for the new lease agreement?

Yes. She said they do all of them on the same day of the month, so she won't give it to me until the 1st, which is too late for 30 day notice.... [more]

Ok, in case anyone is still reading this, here are some updates.

I spoke to the manager again. She said that the reason she can't tell me the new rent is because she herself will not know it until the corporate office tells her the amount, which will not happen until the 1st of the month.

Also, I checked my lease for specifics regarding lease renewal. It is worded in a very confusing way and says they have to give me 30 days notice of the new... [more]
