French fries and cooking with oil on the range
If I was doing this, I'd probably cook them on a low'ish heat until they'd defrosted and warmed through; followed by high heat until they'd browned.
Generally, with oven fries, they've already got quite a bit of fat (Mmm. It's what makes them Delicious!, and is why you can stick 'em in the oven rather than needing to cook them in more fat); so I'd probably use just enough olive oil to keep things from sticking.

I want to slice and dice and julienne...but with what?
I'm a little handed person, too; and my main knife is 6.25"/16cm. Which I find to be enough knife for 99.8% of the things I've had to cut in the past, I dunno, 9 years.
(For what it's worth, it's a Global; from the GF line (The GFs seem to be much nicer than the Gs. I want to say that F stands for Forged, but I'm not sure...). It has a nice heft to it; but it also wonderfully balanced. Some of the other Globals I've used.. not quite so much heft.)... [more]

Burgers and Shakes in Toronto for Great Noms
Based on it being, uh, fourthed by people; the odds are very good that I will be at Dangerous Dan's having a burger this evening. Probably I'll be there about 6:30 or thereabouts (tickets to a performance demand early dinner) if you're in the mood for hanging out with highly recommended burgers.
I'll be the dorky chick in a blue xkcd hoodie.

(I found Dangerous Dan's to be okay-I-guess. I probably would have been just as happy with a burger from a cart/caravan.)

Toronto vs. Vancouver: What do you have to offer for everyday life?
For Music: I like all sorts of things (: If you made me pick genres, I mostly listen to indie/alt rock with a side of pop/electronica/folk/classical/and so on.
Jobwise: My intention is to be working as a programmer computer-dork, rather than near the bottom of the job chain. There are a couple of places on the Toronto side I like the look of working at; but not so much on the Vancouver side.
And as for where I am now: Best as I can tell,... [more]

Delicious Tonic for Gin+Tonics
It's not G&T, however, I find bitter orange (aranciata amara) and grapefruit (pompelo) San Pellegrino sodas are pretty delicious with gin.

It's a date. How do ya eat 'em?
I have a box of fresh dates sitting in my fridge which have an expiry date way out in October (although they aren't pitted, which could make a difference). Are you sure it's really that urgent to eat them now?

Simple home studio
On the guitar input front, I have an M-Audio Firewire Solo which works fine for me.. Guitars plug straight into it without needing to be amplified; and it also has an XLR input for attaching a microphone.
(I also have an M-Audio Trigger Finger which is kinda fun to use for drum programming; and on the software side, I use Ableton Live 7, although it is kinda expensive in the grand scheme of things. That said, both the Firewire Solo and Trigger Finger come with a... [more]

Here's the mail, it never fails, it makes me wanna wag my tail. When it comes I wanna wail: MAAAAIL!
I have a "No Circulars" sign on my mailbox which prevents most of the junk mail from needing to be contemplated (Although real estate agents seem to believe it does not apply to them). OTOH, I don't know the last time I had addressed junk mail, which is probably a whole different ball game, so YMMV.
Most of the mail I get is for past residents d: and that goes in a pile by the front door, and returned back from whence it came.

I like Sigur Ros. What modernist composers should I listen to?
In terms of more specific suggestions...
Of the Arvo Part I have listened to, Alina is my favourite - two longish pieces of music played in several ways with their own little nuances. Nice.
For Kronos Quartet, Short Stories is great; and I'm quite partial to the OST for The Fountain. Some Kronos Quartet is.. hard to listen to, I find.

How can I easily blog the same things, over and over?
I'd probably create an alternate page in the admin thinger for entering "this is just a song" entries[1]; and have a handy-dandy super-duper convenient interface for picking songs from the lists.
Maybe that interface would have two text fields for typing in; one for artist and one for the song title. Both of those text fields might use one of those fandangled javascript libraries that's kicking around that does clever auto-completion using the source lists... [more]

Attack of the Millipedes!
Man. Consider yourself lucky. My invading millipedes headed for my bed.
*twitch*
Anywho, I ended up using plain ol' flyspray around the (inside) edges of windows and door frames every week or so; which resulted in a death zone of crunchy bugs for a foot or so away from the external walls.

Then I had it bleached white! and then it was more notably white than an inconvenient and silly looking length.

What's the prettiest mid-size laptop?
I have a black MacBook. I find it to be lusty.
However, the screen size can be a bit of a pain. I am, in fact, at this moment, impatiently awaiting delivery of a screen to use with it when I'm at home.

How many cats?
It depends on the cats. I have had good cat experiences and bad ones.
I've had singular cats, and have added additional cats with varying results.
One cat + kitten had a rocky start, but got on really well; but alas, kitten went to kitten heaven; and cat ended up very clingy, and spent a while looking for his little cat-buddy.
One cat + two kittens was very ungood. The one cat, normally terrified of cars, ended up... [more]

Kitchen Clueless
Depending on how you learn stuff, TV shows could be much easier to learn from than books.
With all sorts of techniques, seeing someone do the thing is far more constructive than reading a description of how to do it.

Recommend the perfect cookbook
I strongly unrecommend Larousse Gastronomique. It's like an encyclopedia about food, rather than something useful for day-to-day cooking.
I have cooked exactly zero recipes from it; although it has some recipes with interesting curiosity value. Random page selection offers... Turkey stuffed with foie gras, truffles and 24 chicken hearts (among other things) *boggles*.
It's a nice book to own in theory, but not especially practical.

How did a slice of bread give me a shock?
In an office space I used to work in, on days I wore rubber soled shoes, I would get a static-electric shock from touching one of the doorknobs often enough that I would swipe at it to discharge before grabbing it to open it.
So perhaps your rubber soled shoes are being similarly nefarious.

Roasting a little fella that's cute, yellow, and chubby...
I'm quite partial to twice-cooked duck* - the first time around, the duck gets roasted in chicken stock (or water), which moistly cooks the meat through; and the second time, it's roasted dry, which makes the skin crispy.
Mmm. Crispy skin.
(Oh, and for bonus points, if you stash the stock the duck was cooked in, in the fridge, over night; you end up with a layer of delicious duck fat floating on top which is fanfabulous for roasting potatoes or... [more]
