The Overview Effect

Do Our Brains Change When We Travel in Outer Space? A book of compiled accounts of astronauts and cosmonauts called The Overview Effect puts forth anecdotal evidence towards that end. The Overview Institute declares it as fact and aims to induce the change in as many people as possible. One space tourist has volunteered to be a human guinea pig in 2009.

A phantom process was eating my CPU!

Has anyone ever heard of a Windows Server process called "daupbsvc.exe"? This was using a significant amount of processor time on a VMWare Windows 2003 server. Google and Microsoft return no results, as do all of the relevant support forums for the applications that server runs.

Berkey water filters?

Water filterFilter: I'm looking at purchasing a Berkey Light Water filter. This would be intended for both daily use and also to have on hand in case a hurricane or some other disaster knocks out the municipal water supply and we need to scoop drinking water out of a stream. Does anyone have experience with the Berkey filters? How is the taste compared to mainstream filters like Pur or Brita? Do they look odd in your kitchen or are they an attractive fixture? Any other thoughts or brand suggestions, random or otherwise, on this are welcome.

How safe is a Glock?

PistolFilter. I know there are lots of gun related forums/resources on the web (and am looking at those also), but I'd like to query AskMe about Glocks. Specifically what are the practical advantages and disadvantages of the Glock safety trigger mechanism versus traditional safetys?

You're a spared man, Charlie Brown

In 1943, over Allied bomb ravaged Germany, US pilot Charlie Brown's B-17 was badly damaged and straying further from friendly territory. Luftwaffe ace fighter pilot Franz Stigler pursued the bomber intending to shoot it down, but refrained when he saw the extent of the damage and directed Brown and his crew out of harm's way. The two pilots were reunited 46 years later. [via]

Use someone else's words

Call for discussion: Many posts to MeFi have had their link description copied from the linked to article or site. That's fine and I do it when I post, but often both new and older posters don't distinguish that the description is not their own words by using quotes, italics, or otherwise marking it as such. Would it be useful for a small blurb to be inserted on the New Post page to Metafilter advising of the usefulness distinguishing the poster's own words from those of the linked-to piece?

Priority list of things to see in Yosemite

36 Hours in Yosemite: I'll be attending a conference in San Francisco and will have most of the weekend to kill. We've already booked a hotel room just outside Yosemite National Park. I plan on seeing the Giant Sequoias, and generally just driving around. There's so much to see there that only 36 hours seems like a travesty. Alas. What are some must see things there that I can enjoy at a relatively relaxed pace in my short time there?
