Ask post: What should I do with my life? (the middle-aged version)
If you think nursing is interesting, but maybe are less interested in the hands-on physicality of it, perhaps public health?

What is public health?

It's intellectually challenging, very interesting and diverse field, family friendly, pretty good job market (depending on the subsection), pay is okay--you would probably not hit $100 grand but definitely somewhere between there and $50. I have to run but can post more about it later if you want!... [more]

Ask post: Help me outfit myself for my expedition to the Yukon. Well, not quite... but pretty close.
Sturdy, knee-high leather boots will keep your whole body much warmer and are cuter than snow boots, and you can wear them with skirts and tights. I live in these all winter. Paired with a knee-length coat, I stay pretty warm.

The Holyoke Mall is a good place to shop. You might want to look into a day trip up to the outlets in Freeport, Maine, in the early fall--there's lots of good retailers there that will have tons of warm clothes, at a discount. You definitely... [more]

Ask post: Love: what do women want?
All the advice that's been given is good, but to answer the question directly asked--Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen). He starts out as an arrogant jerk, but by the end of the book has figured out how to become sensitive, giving, and loving. (You could rent a movie version and watch it with your wife, too! There's a good chance she would like that. But the movie versions I've seen gloss over the emotional transformation that Darcy undergoes in the book; it takes awhile.)

Ask post: My honey is too young to have prostate cancer!
In regards to the procreation questions, you might want to talk to Fertile Hope--they are a nonprofit organization that helps young cancer patients preserve their fertility. I don't know too much about them past their basic mission, but perhaps they can direct you to other resources for younger cancer patients.

My best wishes to Hellboy for complete remission.

A major subplot of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars) is what happens when a treatment is invented that basically seems to prevent death. Much of the series deals the population problems and the social and political fallout.

Ask post: Wedding anniversary in Brooklyn?
The Chocolate Room in Park Slope is really fantastic. It's kind of in between the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Bridge--maybe not quite walkable to the bridge unless you really like walking (about 2.5 miles), but easy if you were going to take the train or bus even part way. They are opening a branch in Cobble Hill but I'm not sure if that's happened yet or not.

The waterfalls are very neat, so seconding the recommendation to check those out.... [more]

That's just what the foam roller should feel like! Sounds to me like you're doing it right. It will get better--when I started using mine I couldn't hold back the yelps of pain, but eventually it just felt nice.

There's a really nice stretch for your IT and hips--I couldn't find a good picture so I'll try to describe. Stand straight and cross one leg in front of the other, and then lean to the side of the uncrossed leg--you should feel your IT band POP over your joint.... [more]

I'm 5' so I know how hard it is to find pants you don't have to hem! I've been able to get suit pants at Banana Republic petites that don't need alterations--it might be worth checking out if you have one in your area.

Can you wear shoes that cover some/all of the work? I think tights might be weird if it's really hot out. Have you tried black nylons? Those will cover better than nude nylons but won't be as heavy as tights.

Have you tried acupuncture? It might help. It could take several visits, but it's worth a shot. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) might have some herbal solutions, and many acupuncturists can either help with those or direct you to someone who could.

There's nothing wrong with you because you can't forget this. You are NOT "silly or something". This was not your fault, not something you did wrong.

He forced you to do and receive sexual activities. You didn't actively consent. Ask post: Honeymoon Roadtrip Advice!
(MA native, current NYCer)

Nthing the you're cramming in too much, but this is a wonderful idea.

I'd suggest maybe 3-5 days in NYC (DEFINITELY without a car and not less than 3 days). Then you could take an Amtrak train up to Boston and spend 2-4 days there, and then rent a car and drive up to Vermont or New Hampshire and Maine. Maybe 5-6 days in Maine (Portland is really nice, and has great food), you can spend a day at the outlets in Kittery,... [more]

Chiming in for one more suggestion that you try a Gu out on your next long run and see how you feel. I'm also a pretty slow runner (my halves have been about 2:15) and I find it helps to have one when running more than 9-10 miles. Ask post: Washington Mutual - credit card fraud from within?
There's a rash of card theft going around NYC right now, just like this--someone gets ahold of your card number and charges hundreds of dollars at Walmarts and gas stations in Florida. It's happened to three people I know personally (2 at WaMu, 1 at USAA) and I've read on some NYC blogs that there are hundreds of cases right now. In all the cases I know, the people still had their cards and hadn't been in FL, but new ones had been made with their info. One theory is that there was a break in... [more]

Ask post: I'm buying a drum set for the first time. What advice would you offer me?
I got a cheap, used beginners kit off CL for about $200. It's a Sound Percussion. It's okay--it's a little tinny sounding, it's not the sturdiest kit out there, I have a 15" floor tom which is apparently really bizarre, but it does what I need it to. I will definitely upgrade at some point but this has been fine so far for practicing. It sounds like you might want something better than this...I was told I could get a much better, new kit (Tama Star) for about $600. Obviously that's not... [more]

Mercedes Lackey's books have several GLTBQ characters; they might be worth checking out. The first trilogy (Heralds of Valdemar) is the best and has a few main characters that are gay and lesbian. I seem to remember her later trilogies having several gender-queer characters....I think the Mage Winds and the Mage Storms are the sets and those would probably be best for what you're looking for. Try to get ahold of one of those neighborhood maps from the MTA that you see in subway stations. I have one from a friend-of-a-friend, and it's huge--probably about 3'x4.5'. Ask post: Which drum practice pad set should I get?
Do you already own a kit? From your question I am not sure if you are looking for a way to practice quietly or a way to save space. If it's the former, you might try mesh heads (aka muffle heads) for your drums and pads for the cymbals. I have a set of mesh heads from Pearl on my kit, and they're great. It feels like I'm really playing (whereas I find the pads you can put on top of the drums to feel kind of dead and be not very quiet), and they're so quiet you can't hear them from the next... [more]

Replying late to totally disagree with everyone...but I suggest trying just plain water. About two years ago I went through several months where my skin became a mess (at age 28, living in NYC). I had breakouts, blotches, cystic acne, redmarks, everything. I tried the oil cleansing method, I tried fancy cleaners, I tried drug store cleaners, nothing helped.

Try arnica, in addition to ice and antiflamatories. I banged my thigh really hard on a metal corner back in August and there's still a faint shadow of a bruise there, but it stopped hurting after a few weeks. Applying arnica gel a few times a day seemed to help the bruising in my case. (I did see a doctor and she said that serious bruising is not unusual and not really anything to worry about.)

Not sure if you are still reading, but in case--

You can buy mesh heads that will muffle the sound quite a bit.

If you're in a city, or even a large town, there's a good chance you can find a practice space to rent time at. There should be places that rent space to bands that will also offer solo time for musicians, especially drummers, with kits already set up. I pay $8-10/hour for practice space in NYC. You might be interested in public health--maybe program evaluation or epidemiology or health policy. One of the cool things about public health is that you can learn a skill set which is then translatable to many areas--for instance, you can do evaluation and work on a cardiovascular disease prevention program for a city, and then switch to working on an AIDS intervention project at a NPO, and then move to academia and evaluate whether a research project is working.
