If it looks too good to be true...
I like being able to travel internationally and have it take me less than a few weeks to get to my destination.
And somehow I don't believe that customer service has anything to do with airlines going under or not. For most people, customer service is barely thought about, and ticket prices are the only thing worth considering. This is why things like kayak and orbitz exist.
So, for the millions or gallons of fuel the flights are using, and the... [more]

US Presidential Greatness as a Function of Experience
Do anybody's campaign promises actually pan out once they get into office? It seems that, with that whole congress thing to wrangle with, the ideas that one person is spouting to get people to think that he or she is worth voting for are not actually things that are particularly easy to get done.
"Experience" and "Change" as platforms are both vague to the point of useless; empty rhetoric not worth listening to.

Fantastic Plastic Machine
FPM was one of those things where I actually sought out a CD to have for my very own. Now I just need more.
I do rather like the "Different Colors" tune, however. Does it exist in CD-form?

Bad officials are elected by good citizens who don't vote
I think forcing people to come out to the polling places is acceptable. There's no way to force people to vote for one person or another (a good thing), but by simply getting the bodies there, it gets people slightly more involved in the process.

I think I'm missing how it increases their tax burden. Could you elaborate more on that?
I am all for people being disgusted with the election procedure, and all of the ridiculous unattainable promises that candidates (need) to make to entice people to vote for them.
And I'm still not saying that people need to be forced to vote. Just that they would be required to show up on voting day (or send in a blank absentee ballot or such) for a few... [more]

let's talk about pelvic exams
My first pelvic exam was ridiculous. I was in ridiculous amounts of pain (reason for the exam, not caused by the exam), and them telling me to relax was like trying to tell someone to not think about that bus hurtling towards them at full speed. Relaxing was not an option.
But it's only gone uphill from there. Now I don't care much either way, and I think I'd be comfortable with any competent medical professional doing it, regardless of gender. It's so unsexy there's no... [more]

Not All Black & White
Ahh, this helps me understand why I want to shoot the people who thought up the blue LED tickers around in the libraries here.
Blue is painfully hard to read on black.

Stuff you can print out
Couldn't you create a sudoku generator in postscript or something? That prints out a random sudoku game every time you send it to the printer . . .

One thing leads to another.
The Japanese early-evening kids programs were universally endearing to me.
5-15 minutes of random cuteness. And EDUCATION! Oh man.

schnappi
I thought the "si" became particularly useful in answering negative questions in French, so instead of going "You aren't there yet are you?" "No" "No, you aren't there yet, or no, you are there already?" "Yes, I'm not there yet," you can just say si and it gets the point across perfectly.

Big riches
The latimes article implies that women "have to go topless," as if it were a horrible thing--I am more inclined to believe that it just an imposition of western modesty upon the Yapese. For people in Yap, shirts were not worn by anyone until probably the third or fourth westernized nation came through and imposed their ideas upon them.

zarex: That was my impression as well, when I was there for about a month. I suppose, however, that things are likely different when it comes to the outer islands.
Skeptic: The enforcement is not universal. Almost all women who I saw come to the hospital on Yap wore shirts. However, I live with no illusions that I saw the full spectrum of the Yapese castes. I do know that Yap has a history of keeping men and women separate, to the degree that restaurants have been... [more]
