Ask post: Help a mid 20's guy find some new punk music.
If you can take a horn section/ska mixed in with your punk, check out Streetlight Manifesto, especially Everything Goes Numb. You may also want to check out Snuff.

Also, seconding Flogging Molly. I still can't get enough of Within a Mile from Home, which can be summed up as sad songs, pirate songs, and sad-pirate songs.

Seconding Jimmy Corrigan.

Ask post: Please tell me someone else has seen this
ORthey: Not Flatliners. I though Michael J. Fox had to die in that movie to cross over. At any rate, doesn't seem right.

It seems to match an episode of Invader Zim, the "Halloween Spectacular of Spooky Doom", but not entirely. I know I've seen this somewhere, I just can't place it.

These are all interesting suggestions, but they're not matching what I'm seeing in my head. I'm somewhat convinced I dreamt this, which, as far as my dreams go, has to be one of the coolest I've had. But I'm more convinced I've seen this somewhere before. I'm off to work, but I'll check in if I can.

domi_p: That sounds very, very close to what I was seeing. I'm going to try to get my hands on a copy. In the mean time, thanks for you input.

aegt: Absolutely. I don't doubt I'm mashing things together. But I figure one part, the most significant, making a machine to travel to the afterlife, had to have been used somewhere. It's too cool an idea for me to come up with on my own.

nebularwindphone: Not sure. 'Necronauts' as central fixtures in the story sounds about right, but I don't remember details. I think aegt has it, that I'm cobbling a lot of things together.

Ask post: We're going to need a better designed boat!
These are all really good answers, but I'm picking just one. Still, thanks to all of you!

Ask post: IF YOU DO NOT RESOLVE OUR CLAIMS AGAINST YOU WITHIN
The letter states that she has 52 songs on her hard drive, and provided a list of 8 as examples of what she has. She is being accused of distributing these songs, and of copyright infringement.

And I realize that Metafilter is not my lawyer. But I don't know what she should do, honestly, and neither does she, and if we can do this in a way where my parents don't have one more financial thing to worry about, that would be preferable. I'm here looking for experiences... [more]

Ask post: Help me find some neat comic anthologies.
Have you checked out the Flight comics? They're on book 4, and each one is full of great artists and stories. Any self-respecting Borders, BnN, or [insert Canadian Big Box Books] will have them in their comics/graphic novels section.

Ask post: What are some good fictional Star Wars books to check out?
Seconding the Rogue Squadron books. I read them about 10 years ago and I still remember parts of them.

Seconding jeri and BookMooch, especially if you have a library of paperbacks you're trying to get rid of.

Ask post: Great place to live in St Louis?
As someone who grew up in the Chesterfield/Clarkson Valley area, I highly recommend against it. The yards weren't so small, and having highly wooded areas behind my house was fun for a bit. But, as a kid, I hated not being able to go anywhere without a car of some kind. When you live in St. Louis, you drive everywhere, and for a kid, that sucks. My parents grew up in Webster Groves and Kirkwood, and I wish I could have walked around like they did, to the comic store, to Mel Bay's, to get ice... [more]

Ask post: Looking for a Hostel in Hong Kong
By secure, I mean I'm looking to not get things stolen. Oddly enough, burning to death wasn't really on my concerns list. I guess I'll go ahead and pencil that in.

Ask post: I need help identifing a NES game!
Is it Stinger? I don't remember a hamburger, but I do remember a slice of watermelon that shoots seeds at you.

Ask post: Will I be able to enjoy a White Christmas?
The absolute best seats for most performances are going to be in the middle, halfway up on the main floor, because that's where most shows are directed from. That being said, row A might be too close for you. I've been in theaters similar to the Fox in Detroit, and seen shows from all angles (including limited viewing seats, my mom's favorite way of getting cheap seats), and most seats you can get are going the be fine. In fact, seeing a show in a theater like the Fox is a treat in itself.

Ask post: Your all-time favorite book (fiction or non).
I'm not sure if I have any favorites anymore, but I do have some books in my collection that really stand out. (warning: Wikipedia ahead)

The one I've certainly read the most is Generation X, by Douglas Coupland. It helped that I was feeling completely lost at the time (11th grade). Since then, I've read through it about once a year.

The last great book I read was a young adult book called Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson. It's intense.... [more]

Ask post: What's the least manipulative stable credit card company?
I'll second Discover. I find it works in about 95% of the places I shop, and their customer service is delightfully pleasent and helpful. I've had my Discover card for maybe three years now (hooked up in college, like plaidrabbit), and I've never had a problem with them. Plus, their online bill payment system is great. Also, last I heard, Discover was the only card Sams Club accepted, but's been a while since I shopped at a Sams.
