That's the irony, I guess.

MeFi post: African Bloggers
According to Cédric's last post, he's now (or recently finished) helping other reporters in the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to create and learn to maintain their own blogs. Good on him.

Also, I lol'd. Not at the subject matter of the video, but at Cédric's sarcasm and use of the reverse FTFY in the post with the picture of a shiny new SUV.

Further in that post, he writes about how there's money available to buy new SUVs for members of... [more]

There is no such law in Canada.

MeFi post: A new jug ships clean
We get milkbags, delivered by an actual milkman.

The bags get their corners snipped. The milk is then poured - without the assistance of a bag-pitcher - from these floppy, squeezable, and sometimes slippery from condensation, bladders into glass bottles. Nary a drop is spilled.

These complainers would be awed by my feats of pouring prowess.

What happened to my old milk?

If I... [more]

MeFi post: Well, That Took Balls...
The paintings were produced with oil paint applied directly to the artist’s testicles

So... In addition to the paint and the printed matter that would serve as his canvas, the artist had surgical equipment with which to slice open his scrotum and stitch everything back in place after having hauled out his testicles?

I didn't really get what she was talking about with all the high-and-open/low-and-closed stuff. Maybe an animated gif would have illustrated it better.

Then again, a pulsing cervix gif would probably have been quickly stolen and turned into HypnoVag by someone.

was that an axe or just a lamp stand?

Looked more like a lamp stand type of thing to me. If it had a lot more weight at the end (axe, sledgehammer), you'd think that the guy who grabs it when it's swung at him wouldn't have absorbed it that easily. He barely moves backwards, on a slippery paper-strewn floor.

The second monitor he throws, at roughly 0:55, seems attached. It falls strangely, and the cable pushes papers on the desk.

MeFi post: Crap, I'm hungry.
A few years ago, I made a particularly memorable pit stop at a public bathroom. Went to the one unoccupied stall and upon turning around after locking the door, I saw a turd staring back at me from within the bowl. I was about to flush it, mentally grumbling about how people can be such pigs, not to mention slightly squiked out that there was no TP laying on top of it or anywhere in the bowl (had the guy not even wiped?!).

Then I realized something was wrong with this... [more]

Makeup is usually worn to enhance the body so that it achieves a desired ideal that the body deviates from, no? Light-skinned people don't wear dark foundation, or vice versa.

That's not universally true, as there are cases when the desired ideal that makeup helps to achieve is to lighten one's darker-than-desired skin (i.e., Ye Olde lead face powder or vampiric-looking goths) or darken one's paler-than-desired skin (i.e., ganguro girls or self-tanning).

By my estimate, about 90% of the people who either "look gay" or have "televison/theater" in their job category have HIV.

The ones that came up for me were the complete opposite. Those that set off gay stereotype alarms were negative.

Florida teens who believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV

Ugh. That doesn't sound like fun foreplay and/or afterglow relaxation.

I guess it makes a twisted bit of sense though, what with all the household cleaning product ads with "the disinfectant power of Bleach kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses!!!".

MeFi post: Dollar for Dollar?
I live in Canada and our money up here has the raised braille marks.

There's also the large number that's in raised/textured ink in the lower right corner of the "face" side of the bill. Going by the sample of bills I have on hand, that seems to hold up better than the braille-ish dots. With that, I can tell a pick out a fiver with my eyes closed but the two-digit bills were trickier.

Debit cards have raised numbers on the front. Pin pads have braille. Why even bother debating using currency?

Not all places take debit/credit.

And personally, if I couldn't see, I'd be extra freaked out about the possibility of my card being skimmed and/or my PIN compromised.

I wouldn't hold my breath for that, and I don't think the family is either.

People are trolled in the same way all over the internet. In one major internet circle that most people nowadays are aware of, "KILL YOURSELF" is the the most popular thing said to anyone in need of advice.

Hardly comparable.

This wasn't someone posting on 4chan and getting a swift "KILL YOURSELF LOL" near-meme response from anonymous posters. This was from someone (the artificial boy) that she considered a friend / nearly-boyfriend.

Young Yakuza is a pretty interesting documentary, if you ever happen to catch it in a rental place or on tv.

The boss (or some level of sub-boss, actually) comes off as a rather nice guy, despite being a cold and slightly scary SOB.

The run-of-the-mill everyday duties and events were almost comical against the backdrop of yakuza-ness: their 'office' new year's meeting/celebration was as dry and boring as probably any other corporate... [more]

When the guy signs off he says he's from Global. The news truck probably drove by, saw a bunch of kids pointing, and did a human interest fluff piece.

NBC probably just picked it up, and added the kooky/quaint Canadians angle: "Canadian Town Buzzes..." Calgary's hardly a 'town' and it's probably just the block / neighbourhood that's abuzz.

Was there something else that we don't see in the video that contexted it as humor?

Maybe it's funnier if you understand the lyrics. Or maybe the gag is the kid being able to sing on despite the manhandling. Someone Dutch might be able to explain the gag.

If it didn't look so rehearsed, it'd be more impressive. How many of you would be able to sing while some crazy TV host dangles you upside-down by your ankles?

Huh, I guess they could've refused it:

"Legal tender of Canadian coinage is governed by the Currency Act which sets out limits of: 40 dollars if the denomination is 2 dollars or greater but does not exceed 10 dollars."

So payment-in-nothing-but-toonies can be refused if the debt is more than 40 dollars. I'm guessing the "or greater" part was put in consideration of 5 dollar coins.

I suppose it's harmless, so long as you don't actually care about changing anyone's minds or your cause actually succeeding.

The 'little more attention' that this brought is liable to be received with a chuckle from people already on your side: "HAH! count that lot, suckers!". It might even be liable to get a giggle out of people who don't particularly care, but they'll continue not caring; it was just a funny blurb in the news. Otherwise, as rusty noted,... [more]
