Down or synthetic sleeping bag?
While everyone gave you the correct technical answer, I suggest you get to a store where you can feel both of them. I find synthetic bags stiff and unconfortable while down bags are soft and give this incredible feeling of being cuddled by a large duvet.
I chose chose down sleeping bags, not because of technical advantages, but because of its confort.

Now you lose your head!
No, you don't, the main rotor is high enough. But the main rotor create an impressive downwash and most people have the reflex to duck because of that downwash.

wouldn't there be a design requirement to keep the blades at safe heights when operating?
There are no strict design requirement according to Federal regulation regarding safe rotor height. This is what I could find in the FAR :
This one is obvious :
Sec. 27.661 - Rotor blade clearance :
There must be enough clearance between the rotor blades and other parts of the structure to... [more]

Software for long documents
I'm surprised to hear about MS Word problems with long documents. I work almost daily with 600+ pages, 100k+ words documents without any hack or any problems. On the other hand, we do keep backups

Everybody mentionned the classics and they are very good recommendations. If you are looking for something more recent, I recommend Amélie Nothomb, a joy to read.

Where to buy a straight razor in Montreal?
I would ask an old school barber that uses still straight razor. I'm thinking of Hollywood barbers on fairmount/clark or Menick on masson/chabot.

Water vs. Tea
Some nurses at the blood donor clinic recently told me that nothing rehydrates except for water
Nonsense, these nurses should be ashamed of themselves for perpetuating old wives' tales like that. Anything that contains water will rehydrate you, and the (very mild) diuretic effect of caffeine is more than compensated for by the amount of liquid you consume.
Well, they are technically right. Only water... [more]

Do I have to plug it every morning to get it hot?
I took another look at my iron to be sure and the lowest temperature setting only mentions "low", so there is no other way of turning it off than pulling its plug.
I always iron at the same temperature every morning so it strikes me that few irons have a separate on/off control. Heck, even my oven has it.

Alright, I'm saving tons on rent but now what am I going to do?
Verdun...I lived there for a couple of month and sometimes miss my 400$/month apartment.
I remember 2 nice places, Garage café and Delirium Café, both on corner of Ethel and Hickson. For groceries, there's the Atwater market. There are a couple af good bakeries on Wellington near LaSalle for your croissant.

I need a waterproof watch that monitors heart rate
When I was a competitive cyclist, I used a 500$ Polar HRM, but now, I use a 25$ timex ironman HRM for recreational use and it has everything I need to track my recreational training regiment. Small downside of the Timex : the chest strap is not really comfy compared to Polar's wearlink chest strap.

Freelance Mech Engineer- Programmer: is it possible?
I don't know about freelancing, but I know you can find a lot of jobs that involves mechanical engineering and coding. I have some friends developing applications for various PLM software developers (Dassault systeme, PTC, MSC and others). Personally, I used to code post-processors for CNC machines, which uses a programming language similar to Fortran.

Bend pipe into a 'U'?
I tried to make snowshoes by bending sand filled aluminium pipes and failed miserably.
No, low iron steel pipes are ductile, and will not shatter and blast metal fragments into your eye or something. Unless you are trying to make glass tubular bells, you are safe.

Next morning, grab bagels at St Viateur Bagel -- not Fairmount, they're gross
Blasphemy. Fairmount bagels are way better.
For breakfast, try L'avenue on Mont-Royal. You'll find the best lattes at "Caffe Grazie Mille" on on Fairmount & Clark and "Cafe Arte Java" on Mont-Royal.
Oh yes, be careful when crossing intersections.

Additional thoughts :
I feel that the Quebeckers in general are still very spiritual. They just don’t like being associated to an organized religion or a doctrine. As the poster said : Catholic religion used to control almost everything here and this period is remembered as a very dark one, so people are being wary toward any religions. I believe Quebeckers likes to mix multiple beliefs from different religion (i.e. : believe in the resurrection of Jesus, the nirvana... [more]
