Oh dear, its the audio media server question again!
One of the benefits of lossless is you can easily batch transcode a billion times over and over and not lose any quality. (I used to have a pretty small Monkey's Audio collection when I was on Windows (and foobar2k was my audio player) but then I moved over to Linux, so I transcoded everything to FLAC and all was well. Now I'm a Mac user, so I transcoded again to Apple Lossless. All metadata (artist, album, track, etc) carried over so I had no problems. The last transcoding project went... [more]

Clueless Mac user seeks help deleting viruses from PC.
A re-install of windows isn't bad, on a modern machine, it will take 30-40 minutes, another 15-20 to install firefox and whatever other software your mom used and not only will you know that there isn't a single piece of malware of trace of a virus anywhere, you also won't be tracking down how to get rid of that last file that somehow reinfected itself when you rebooted.
(A side note, I'm still sort of amused when I hear Windows people talk about how secure they are with... [more]

People management
Coming from someone who is, you sound like an introvert. There's nothing wrong with not wanting daily or weekly social interaction.
If you don't feel the need to call someone up on the phone twice a week, don't. There's no obligation to do so.
(My family has gotten the hint that I like "me time" and doesn't get offended when I don't call every week to see what is going on. Instead, I'll write an email or two when I get a free moment so... [more]

Podcast CMS needed
Consider me biased too, but Drupal does this. And whatever "heavy modding and customization" you'd need to do to it (not much, writing your own Drupal theme isn't modding Drupal) would certainly be much less work than asking some programmers to write you a CMS from scratch. Why reinvent the wheel?
Not to mention that if you decide to add a forum or some other feature, you won't have to write that from scratch, just drop in the module. (Sure, you might need to... [more]

Anyone had any success using Apple's portable home directory feature without OS X server or a linux server?
I first thought of rsync, but then it seems that rsync doesn't handle OS X's resource forks as well and I see that sometimes people reccomend unison over rsync for two-way syncing.
Thanks, though!

Remy, I'd do the network home thing if I was never taking my Powerbook out of the apartment, I think I would need the portable home because I would need a local copy of everything on the laptop, no? Thanks!
Intermod: Wow, you know I've been reading MeFi for years but never realized that because I do it almost exclusively by RSS? Lesson learned. Sorry!

For future reference, I've got a post here about syncing two Macs without .Mac or MobileMe, using Unison instead.

Not caselaw, but the only reason you have a right to copy the CD is fair use, which flies out the window once you no longer own the CD.

Add them to my spam filter.
Then when they say that I don't respond to their emails any more, I explain that my email program has flagged them as a spammer due to the types of emails they were once sending me.
That usually stop them.

Slow during the day, frantic at 5 pm?
Living in metro NY, the local car place is open 7am-7pm M-F and on weekends (If I drop my car off after 5, no work will be done until the next day), my doctor works a Sunday-Thursday work week, 11am-7pm, the laundromat I drop my clothes off at is open M-Tu 7am-3pm and W-Sat 11am-6pm. (It's just the owner who works there, no one else. I usually drop it off Tuesday on my way to work and can pick it up Wedneday after work.)
As for food, dinners are all open 24 hours, chain... [more]

How common is familiartity with .ZIP archives?
Working at a large law firm where there is a computer at every desk (and about two dozen unassigned computers) I can safely say that the majority of the people here don't know what a ZIP file is and if it weren't for the fact that the icon looked sort of like a folder and acted sort of like a folder (which makes everyone assume it is a folder and treats it like such), the few zip files we have around here would cause major headaches.
Regarding files not opening in Word,... [more]

Animator in need of assistance
As someone who had a Drobo and then sold it, if you're looking for fast, Drobo isn't it. The reason that it doesn't have a firewire port is because the unit can't even saturate a USB 2 port, especially as it fills up.

Gmail Blocked – Even Worse!
(I am the person in the IT-ish sort of role in the office.)
Recently, streaming radio was blocked. Why? Not because I hate music. Because the powers that be were wondering what was up with surfing the net being slow and some stats were run and it turns out when you've got an office of 150 people and a third of them are listening to various streaming radio stations, you're going to have a bandwidth crunch. So it got filtered. Of course people came to me. But I don't run... [more]

How do I geotag webcam pictures?
You can geotag on Linux too. There's even software to geocode on Linux and Windows. Not to mention geotagging software written in Java to be truly cross-platform. Though under OS X, you don't even need a full blown application to do this (it's really just modifying the EXIF of your image anyhow) you can use a simple Automator Action to geotag your photos.
(The one thing that is nice about OS X is how you can easily automate things without having to do things like write a... [more]

You can always calculate by what percentage he fudged the numbers and reduce the asking price by the same percentage. And then make an offer against that.

Tupperware with a single lid size?
The Swirl A Round's lids do not seal air/liquid tight. In other words, if a family member gives you one full of fresh fruit and it tips over during the car ride home, you're going to have sticky fruit juice over your car seats.

To live an hour outside of the city
I can only help with the NY side of things, you can catch trains into the city from either suburban Long Island, looking up some stats for towns around here (it's suburban sprawl, so the towns are all up against each other) the population density varies from almost 10,000 people per square mile to as little as 800 (nice neighborhoods where your property is huge). While there are urban areas on LI, none of them match NYC. However, if you don't require being surrounded by sky scrapers, you'll be... [more]

privacy for my 9 year old?
I had a safe when I was young, I knew it could be opened by anyone within seconds without the combination, but it gave me the sense of security and privacy that I otherwise wouldn't have had sharing a room with my younger brother. (This may also be why I'm a bit of a privacy nut in some ways now.)

Am I a prude because I wanted to date for a month before hittin' the sheets?
As a guy who hasn't really dated, I'd be sort of surprised if I was seeing a woman and we were in bed in less than a month. But that just might be my low self esteem and various other personal issues regarding sex speaking.
If a guy has a policy of three dates and then bed and you've got a one month and then bed policy, then either one person compromises or you go separate ways. Sexual expectations are just one of many possible incompatibilities.... [more]

My roommate almost never leaves the house!
Man, am I glad I don't have roommates and live alone. I'm home all the time (aside from work) and spend the majority of my time at home in my living room on my computer, either surfing the internet, messing around with PHP or doing school work. I've got an almost non-existent social life.
