Wow, what a treasure trove!

They sure made it frustrating to navigate, but it's worth the extra clicks.

MeFi post: Town Meeting! Town Meeting!
Rhaomi's ideas are perfect. I really, really, really hope that's what Obama does. I'd love to see the fallout from the McCain camp trying to complain about it.

Judging by the facial expressions on the audience members as each candidate is speaking, it looks like people are not liking McCain's answers very much.

Side note: Does McCain's gait look strange? His legs and feet aren't making smooth movements. I keep thinking he's going to trip.
posted to MetaFilter by amyms at 6:41 PM on October 7, 2008
That's because he's a fragile doddering old man in the process of quickly dying.

Well, yeah, there's that. But I was noticing that he seems even more unsteady than usual.

It's refreshing to see that McCain's faux-patriotic code words (e.g. "American blood" etc.) fall flat when he's not surrounded by sycophants. (Yes, I realize that the audience can't "react" but you can tell by their faces that they're not responding favorably to McCain's bait.)

McCain shambling over to pet that guy was AWESOME.

Shambling! That's the perfect word to describe what I was trying to point out earlier. A cross between shuffling and ambling.

Sorry, but it needed to be said.

I very much enjoyed how well Senator Obama addressed the issue of health care.

He seems to be one of the few politicians who has taken the time to understand how frustrating and expense the health care industry is for regular people, and who can speak convincingly about how to fix it.

Ask post: What can I expect at my first Al-Anon meeting?
Will I be expected to do/say anything as the newcomer?

No, you can simply sit back and observe/listen if you wish.

Is anyone going to ask or care about me being completely non-religious, or can I sit around and quietly interpret any "higher power" references in my own non-religious fashion?

No one will ask.
posted to Ask Metafilter by amyms at 6:13 PM on October 8, 2008
I should add: Good for you for doing something proactive for you. Al-Anon is about finding support and strength for yourself, regardless of whether your loved one ever quits drinking or not.

At most meetings, you'll be greeted informally upon arrival while everyone is milling around and getting settled, but no one will ask you any probing questions. If they do, and/or if anyone treats you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, then you've found a... [more]

Ask post: How important can one little vent be?
My bed is currently just a box spring and mattress on the floor

Don't place the bed directly on top of the vent, get it up off the floor with a cheap metal frame, then buy a vent deflector to redirect the air out into the room.

Ask post: Vote For The Candidate On This Sign
No, yard signs have never convinced me to vote for (or against) anyone in particular, but they've definitely given me reason to think differently about people I "thought I knew" (e.g. seeing signs for rabidly right-wing candidates in the yards of people I previously thought were rational).

MeTa post: Smells like Jessamyn Spirit
The Grey?? Oh crap, I always thought it was "The Brown"! I always wondered what everyone was talking about.

According to Colorzilla the RGB values for MeTa are 102,102,102, which according to this would be "grey40". It always looks a little brown to me too, though.

Huge make-out tune: Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" which was the love song from the movie "Say Anything" (1989).

I'm talking song you're embarrassed to admit you owned yet were all over the radio.

Ahh, okay then, anything by New Kids On The Block. Especially "Hangin' Tough."

Nothing to be ashamed about regarding The Spin Doctors. "Two Princes" is a great 90s song.

Good list, Sonny Jim, but the second Seal song is "Kiss From a Rose" and the lyric is "kissed by a rose on the grey" (not grave).

some of these suggestions have been considered and dismissed, some we're still considering and some are in "not going to happen" territory and I figured people would like to know which were which in some cases.

Very much so. Thanks, jessamyn.

Ask post: Get New York to stop honking?
There are already official signs on the street that indicate a seemingly unenforced fine for honking.

If there are official signs on the street than indicate a fine for honking, then you need to be proactive in writing down the license plate numbers of the vehicles you observe to be honking, and call them in to the police dispatch (use the non-emergency number), or send them in by mail. Keep at it until the powers-that-be can't ignore you.

posted to Ask Metafilter by amyms at 1:03 AM on October 5, 2008
It would be so much easier to come to terms with the honking than to try and stop it. Just let it go.

That sounds good in theory, but if it's incessant and unbearable (the OP's word) then the OP would probably feel better if he/she at least attempted to do something about stopping it.

MeFi post: The Fifties: an invention of Sha Na Na / Scottish Highlanders / Rondald Reagan
In the future, someone will write an article postulating that the 80s were just a collective fantasy. I don't know whether to be relieved or saddened by that notion.

Ask post: Buying a house for my parents and sibling: brilliant or stupid?
Sounds like a wonderful idea as long as you can afford the mortgage on your own (e.g. if you're letting your family members live there rent-free, you won't be making any income from the investment in the foreseeable future). As you stated, you'll eventually be able to sell (and/or rent to other tenants) in the long run, so in that case it's a good investment.

Ask post: Credit, Schmedit!
With "poor" credit, the only credit cards you're going to get are the ones that are prepaid or have exorbitantly high interest rates. Your best bet is to open a checking/savings account at a credit union and see if they offer an "in-house" credit card along with it. You can also ask about the same thing at a bank, but a credit union is better overall if there's one you can join.

Capital One is kind of a sketchy company.

Indeed. Do not, no matter how desperate you are, get a credit card from Capital One.

Ask post: Worker not working.
I think you should first pull her aside privately and mention exactly what you've said here (e.g. show compassion but also point out how her behavior/performance is potentially putting her job in jeopardy). Don't go tattling to higher-ups unless her lack of performance will negatively impact you (and your job) in a personal way.

I know you're worried because you are the one who originally recommended her for the job, but that doesn't have to impact you as much as you... [more]

Thanks for those links, nickyskye. I'm not Catholic, but I grew up around a lot of amazingly cool nuns who were affiliated with the hospital where my mother worked during my formative years. My husband was raised Catholic, and went to Catholic schools, so he has good and bad nun stories.

amyms is an interesting one to me, because I always pronounced it ah-MIMS in my head, and just last night realized it was probably Amy M.S., like with jonmc.

Your second notion is the correct one.

There's a recent thread here where people talked about their nicknames, including some comments about pronunciation.

Ask post: Is Bi-Monthly Really Better?
The advantage is that you're saving by paying less in interest (e.g. if the interest on your loan is compounded daily, then paying something once every 15 days instead of once every 30 days will save you lots of interest over the course of your loan). Example.

Ask post: I want to heat and eat food not emit it.
Try placing a desk fan between the crock pot and the bedding/clothing area, and point it to blow out toward the window. In such a small area, you're probably not going to be able to avoid a little bit of permeation, so maybe you could try to avoid foods with really overpowering and/or offensive smells (e.g. no hard-boiled eggs or fried onions).
