MeFi post: My, it seems you have uncovered a periodicals repository!
DU:
"Notion" being the operative word. Most (all?) of these journalists (or in some cases "journalists") still represent, consciously or unconsciously, the views of their corporate masters.

DU, I'm wondering how many journalists you actually know.

And yeah, neutrality is a myth - often a dangerous one - but I'm afraid earnest use of the phrase "corporate masters" might have tipped... [more]

MeFi post: he could bear to wait no longer
A smart man inquired, "Do you know there's a person under your train?" I looked at the blood on the windscreen momentarily before assuring him that, yes, I was aware.

He paused for a heartbeat, looked at his watch and said, "So, how long before we get on the move again?"

Submitted for your consideration: The Problem.

MeFi post: One-woman crime spree
With the open borders and only partially-connected police forces, I'm surprised Europe doesn't have more of these traveling serial killers.

Why are you surprised? Most people don't want to be serial killers. For the average schlub, there's not much reason to - shit pay, no benefits, lots of manual labour, isolation, health hazards galore - and it's not as though less-than-draconian security measures somehow magically convince... [more]

MeFi post: Watchmen Trailer is Up. It's not good.
Rorschach's line in the trailer appears to have been, ah, somewhat cleaned up from its original version in his journal excerpt on page 1:

The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' And I'll look down and whisper 'No.'

MeFi post: Suspect Soldiers
Just think of it as the Army recruiting "veterans" of the constant street wars being waged across this country, to be used in the constant street wars being waged in another country. Makes perfect sense to some people.

So, you're saying poverty, institutionalized racism, and the drug war is a training exercise.

MeFi post: The psychological impact of war
In the first situation, the soldier is a victim. In the second, the soldier is an accessory. A lot of people don't want to hear that, but they counter with calling me a dick instead of explaining why there's no difference.

Two words, Mr. Mayor: poverty draft.

Anyway, beyond issues of culpability, which are certainly complicated, the result is still the same: a large portion of an entire generation is coming home broken, and... [more]

Some day I'm going to make a FPP all about the virtues of snark and offhand pithy sarcasm, and watch with glee as MeFi contrarians' heads asplode in the comment thread, or respond, in true contrarian fashion, with a slow but steady stream of carefully reasoned sincerity - or, having nothing constructive to say, say nothing. I know, I've loosed my share of snarktillery as well, but it's just seemed particularly excessive this last week.

Judges make rulings on law, not on public opinion.

And the law isn't open to interpretation. If it were, we'd need, like, some sort of special caste of magistrates, charged with the task of interpreting it, and that'd be nutty.

The law is a collection of opinions, interpreted by people with opinions, and enforced by people with opinions and guns.

MeFi post: Faceless People
I truly despise how large corporations are slowly bleeding the mysterious and whimsical of all life. In creating a context where it's assumed anything extraordinary like this is simply another advert, artistic intervention becomes a tool for cultural circumvention, the loop of consumption comes that much closer to being closed, and everyone gets that little bit more cynical.

Stunts like this are a crime against imagination, and I deeply resent them.

MeFi post: Bicycle Lock / Planter - get your bike out of the hall
(Part of the problem is 99 out of 100 riders lock their bike to the ring and not the post like they're supposed to.)

Hm? If you lock to the post and they get the ring off, they have your bike. If you lock to the ring and they get the ring off, they have your bike, but they also have the Heavy Ring Of Shame, and I'd like to think any cyclist would "stop to chat" with someone lugging a ring attached to a bike.

dobbs, I assumed you were referring to the 2x4 thing, which, as it turns out, makes it irrelevant which part you lock to - unless you were lucky enough to lock to the half of the ring that didn't come off on the first try (but if you locked to the post as well, they could probably lift your lock off).

I've never heard of people actually cutting through the rings. That sounds like it would draw far more attention than cutting a lock - but there are some pretty brazen... [more]

The redesign of the gallon milk jug, experts say, is an example of the changes likely to play out in the American economy over the next two decades. In an era of soaring global demand and higher costs for energy and materials, virtually every aspect of the economy needs to be re-examined,

MeFi post: GemCraft
For epic bosses you need to do some strategic combining - yellows, greens, cyans and purples, in that order of priority. Damage doesn't scale with cost, it's true, but specials (chance for triple damage, poison duration, chance for shock, chance for armour reduction respectively) does. Don't bother with blue - use trenches for slowing, and save any blues you get to build bombs.

Focus on bends in the path, where one gem will get the longest time to fire at the creeps.... [more]

That quote from the Sergeant is shameful, but not surprising. Most Toronto cops really, truly just don't get cycling. Every PC should be required to spend a year as a bike cop. Wouldn't hurt to keep them out of the cruisers anyway.

I should say, though, that there are a lot of good things about Toronto from a cyclist's perspective: there's a great community, and from an infrastructure point of view, that stuff is there, it just needs to be encouraged,... [more]
