Ask post: Help me get an internet connection!
contraption, GuyZero - Bedford, MA, actually. I tried several DSL providers and none could get things up in less than a week. As for panicking, I think I'm beyond panic at this point and in that blissful state that exists between caught in headlights and being smooshed by the bus!

boba - I tried (oh, how I tried!). All of our neighbor's have said no. Thanks neighbors.

Ask post: DeBeers Settlement
Did you file before 5/18/2008?

If no confirmation was received, I would assume that it didn't register on their site properly.

I would call the Diamonds Claims Administrator phone number listed on the site.

Also, just curious why you think you'll be getting a substantial rebate? The consumer class is set to receive $135million. After legal fees, you can bet that will drop to 50-60 to be distributed. Divide that up by... [more]

G4L

Download the ISO, burn image to CD and go. You can do a bitwise copy, so you shouldn't need to bless the new drive.

g4l-v0.26 is pretty stable. Grab it from the Download link on the link above, then hit g4l ISO images. It's in there.

How does this have any bearing on the situation?

Unless you have been specifically asked to preserve data, wipe it. That's what I tell my users (the ones I like, anyway).

Ask post: From non-vegan to vegan.
I'm very picky about cheese and lactose intolerant, and feared that I would never find a properly textured vegan cheese until I discovered Soya Kaas. The mozzarella is the best (it's kind of stringy like real mozz and melts just as well). Get the brick, not the slices while the slices melt well, they taste weird). Avoid the low fat version - it tastes like Pay-Doh!
posted to Ask Metafilter by Cat Pie Hurts at 7:29 AM on July 28, 2008
Whoops. I didn't know about the casein aspect to Soya Kaas. Sorry about that (poor assumption on my part - has the word "soy" and doesn't trigger my lactose intolerance = improper vegan attribution)

Ask post: How do I get myself off quicker?
Try a buttplug or, even better, anal vibrator (ones specifically for prostate stimulation). It's great in those rare moments that I want to get come FAST; I can get off in 30 seconds end to end using a vibe.

Ask post: I'm the king! of 11 pounds of salmon.
I'm not familiar with methods, but, why not smoke the whole thing? To me, smoked salmon is like the bacon of the sea, so you can never have too much of it.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Cat Pie Hurts at 5:59 PM on July 20, 2008
Er..smoke it and FREEZE it, that is. Triple bag, suck out the air and pop in the freezer. I have a few pounds that I've been working on for the last 6 months that's stored in the freezer. I take it out, hack off a chunk and either thaw or defrost in the microwave. Mmmmmm.

Pavlovian reconditioning: superglue tacks, butt end down, to the snooze button. You'll be trained out of hitting it in no time.

Alternate solution: as fuse theorem says above, get cats. They'll wake you every day in a manner that amounts to the solution above.

Ask post: A week in Florida in December. Where to go?
We'd consider the Caribbean but flight costs are pretty high these days.

Flight? You'll be right near Port Everglades. How about a cruise? A day cruise can be very reasonable.

(And seconding St. Pete...unlike it's neighbor across the bay, St. Pete is a fun place).
posted to Ask Metafilter by Cat Pie Hurts at 5:41 PM on July 16, 2008
If you DO head up in the direction of St. Pete, take a day and go to Tarpon Springs, which is basically an old Greek sponging town.

Ask post: Looking for a word to train my dog to come to, besides the obvious
This is kind of like a doggy safeword, isn't it?

If I had a dog, I would use, "DESTROY!", if only to have a real excuse to yell it in public. (There's also a little inherent sadomasochism in teaching your dog to come TO you when yelling "DESTROY". It even goes well with the safeword concept!)

C:\cygwin\bin\rxvt.exe -e /cygdrive/c/cygwin/bin/bash --login -i

And if you really want cmd:

C:\cygwin\bin\rxvt.exe -e /cygdrive/c/WINDOWS/system32/cmd.exe

Ask post: Hurry up and weight?
I have to disagree with the "eat much less" people. If I were to offer any kind of uninformed advice, it would have to be, "eat more" with the following caveat:

Start tracking what you eat. Use a site like FitDay or Gyminee. It can be both exciting and depressing at first. I've lost 75lbs just by becoming aware of my caloric intake (being aware helped me to make positive modifications to my diet within the bounds of my caloric requirements.) I... [more]

Ask post: "He's Just Not That Into You": Fact or Fiction?
Sometimes, he's just not into pursuing you because he needs to work, pay bills, feed his cat and eat. Sometimes, there is time for pursuit and sometimes not. Love and romance are wonderful things, but not worth a damn if you have no framework on which to build it upon after the initial flare up.

Also, relentless pursuit is typically called "stalking".

Ask post: Salary for IT: I can't find a title for what I do, so I can't research whether I'm underpaid or not. Help?
I went through this recently. I was in the same exact boat as you - THE IT dept for 60-odd people. They me the IT Manager title (and pay) when I hire an underling in 2009, but until then, it's senior sysadmin, so I would say you're a sr. sysadmin as well.

I'm with Detuned Radio about CHDK, except I took a risk and went with the 590, which doesn't work with CHDK...yet?

Ask post: Why does the posse show up on a date?
Does she want me to be more explicit about asking her out "on a date"?

Uh..yeah.

And I wouldn't try kissing her until you're really sure. Surprise magic movie kisses tend to end with testicular battery in real life. Or embarrassment. I'm not sure which is worse.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Cat Pie Hurts at 5:48 AM on June 16, 2008
Not to say that she specifically wants you to ask her out, but it sounds like it's in the realm of possibility.

Ask post: Would it be absolutely ludicrous to look into buying a car that takes premium fuel in this day and age?
I have nothing positive to add regarding the cars you are interested in, but with regards to the vibration: get your rims checked. I've got a nasty vibration that starts up around 45mph (2002 Ford Focus). My mechanic pointed out the dents in my rims from nailing too many big potholes. When I get around to having it repaired, it will run about $100 per rim (repair, not replace).

wouldn't they catch that when they are balancing after a rotation?
They SHOULD catch it, but whether they actually tell you is a different matter. Depends on where you get the work done. I've learned to avoid the big chain shops as workmanship tends to be lacking.

Ask post: Why are more operating systems options appearing on my laptop?
This is all in the bootloader, grub. You haven't listed the options, so I can only assume that there are 4 Ubuntu options: one kernel, kernel safemode, new kernel, new kernel safe mode. I don't have an Ubuntu box in front of me, so it's all assumption.

I imagine that you received a new kernel via an update and that's why you have the extra options.

Ask post: Is there a quick way of copying files "up" an SSH connection?
Seconding unixrat. Zmodem is a godsend. WHen I first transferred a file via Zmodem over an ssh session, I was shocked and amazed; I hadn't used Zmodem since my old BBS days!

Also, if you are connecting fom a WIndows system, there are a bunch of different term. emulators that have built in x/y/zmodem support (I used TeraTerm for years before moving to full *nix).

Ask post: I'll rub the lotion on my skin if I can avoid the pain again.
By "chub rub", do you mean that your thighs rub together?
I can't help with the current burning, but you really want to switch to boxer briefs, even better would be cycling briefs; anything that hugs the skin and rides low..maybe halfway down to the knee.

Oh! I just remembered what will help with the pain: if you are in the US, check your local pharmacy for Boil-Ease. It's 20% benzocaine. Any *caine cream will numb it, really.
posted to Ask Metafilter by Cat Pie Hurts at 5:31 PM on June 1, 2008
One more thing: if you can find them, spend a little more and get the boxer briefs or cycling shorts hat with moisture away from your skin. They're a serious painsaver in the summer.

And I'm with loiseau - that's an icky term. I prefer to think of it as "mute cricket opera".
