MeFi post: Cops on Segways
I continue to be amazed at the level of hate for the Segway.

Poor kids. Some of you really got your hopes up, didn't you?

Traffic ground to a halt the other evening at Constitution and 15th Street in NW DC. A tourist miscalculated the curb and fell off his rented Segway. He was hurt enough so that he didn't just get back up. Luckily, all of the DC Segway tour company (named "Segs in the City) make all of their riders wear helmets and take a 30 minute operating course, and I imagine they make them sign disclaimer forms that are as long as your arm.

MeFi post: Googles social interface
Not to bite the hand that feeds me, but google does seem to give way too much weight to blogs. I mean, for a handful of various search terms, one of my blogs consistently ranks in the top 10 results, but one of my client's sites can't manage to rank in the top 30 for stuff they're actual experts and paid professionals in doing.

Your soundtrack is better, Gavin.

And anyone who has ever played RCT knows that the crash video won't work. You need a bathroom, and maybe a cotton candy stand somewhere if you expect your guests to come back.

Seriously. Just think of how much gold they could have amassed in WoW in the time it took them to do that.

To all the people who are sneering at the "coffee addicts" behavior ... you're as bad as the barrista. So, if it's not the caffeine, what's your excuse?

You must be a proud american then, Zouhair, by making such a stupid and chauvinistic generalization.

I've seen plenty of indie coffee shops come and go that had no Starbucks in the vicinity.

Running a business is tough. Running a business in the food industry is even tougher. The profit margin in the restaurant industry is notoriously minuscule. There are a million reasons why a business fails, but having to compete head to head with a huge multinational corporation is even more of a burden, even if that multinational corporation has desensitized... how does one create their own patterns?

The only thing thats missing is a tab to upload your own images, which even registering doesn't seem to let you do.

I bet they don't really want you linking directly to the images, especially since they're backgrounds (bandwidth), but they really ought to let you link to your profile and a page of all your creations.

MeFi post: C is for Cookie that's good enough for me
“What he’s doing is brilliant. He’s allowing the dough and other ingredients to fully soak up the liquid — in this case, the eggs — in order to get a drier and firmer dough, which bakes to a better consistency.”

What he's doing is not letting it soak up the liquid. That would happen in a half an hour, at the most. I think what he's really doing is allowing what liquid there is to evaporate. I would suspect that adding a little less egg white at the... [more]

why does the vacuum process work?

Well, maybe the excess liquid that evaporates in the first batch ends up being extracted by the pressure of the vacuum and remains in the plastic bag?

I suspect two different things are happening with the two processes. With the 36-hour wait, they say that the dough ends up crumbly. With the vacuum, the dough ends up "elastic." How can they both end up with the exact same result?

I've been to Voodoo Doughnuts. It is completely overrated. It's in a really divey part of town, and their products are inedible. If that's the best doughnut shop on the west coast, that's really saying something.
posted to MetaFilter by Dave Faris at 2:46 AM on July 10, 2008
Isn't Voodoo Donut the place where they were talking to Anthony Bourdain about how they had to discontinue a Nyquil donut because it turns out you can't serve medicine with food?

That's the one. The fact that Bourdain didn't instantly proclaim that their donuts were crap compared to even the chainstore donuts out east caused me to lose all respect for him. Voodoo Doughnuts would have been more appropriately featured on Andrew Zimmern's show.... [more]

MeFi post: Just the facts Ma'am
In the 1997 movie classic, L.A. Confidential, "the fictional TV show Badge of Honor, on which Sgt. Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) is the technical adviser, is loosely based on Dragnet. Throughout the film, fellow officers tease Jack by saying 'Just the facts!', which is Sgt. Joe Friday's famous line from the series." IMDB.

flash in the pan.

Well, you're welcome to deride it all you want, but since books like The Difference Engine were published in the early 90's, the genre is hardly a flash in the pan, no matter how much you hate Cory Doctorow.

I bet the Freepers, if they even care, would feel just as stunned as we do if they looked at this thread, which is filled with as much hate as theirs is filled with love of the man. Surely we can't be talking about the same person, can we? It's ironic that they seem to debate whether Helms was a polarizing figure.
