Ask post: Help me find this toy!
NO! It was Glo-Worms!!!!!!!
My fave. I have a pic somewhere at home.

Ooh, also, I think it would have to have been made around 1985-7, 'cause I know I was a little older in that picture.

These? (More.) I canNOT find a pic of the house online. Sorry, I am just super excited because that was one of my favorite toys ever.

Ask post: Growing pain in breasts?
Because you don't feel any lumps, I'm hesitant to say it could be this, but -- I have fibrocystic breasts and occasionally get pains like this. They get markedly worse when I am consuming a lot of caffeine. I've cut down to 1 caffeinated drink per day and I hardly get them anymore.

Ask post: Yet another grad school advice question
Find out where the people who write the important, exciting, interesting papers in your field of interest (can't help you there, mine is completely different) teach (their credentials are often either listed on their papers, or are easily Googleable). Check out their departments online. Find out how they are regarded (traditional stuff, like US News and World Report, Barron's, all that), but that's not the most important thing, the faculty is. Then apply there.

I could have written this post. Thanks, everyone, for the great suggestions, and thanks for posting, arianell.

Ask post: How to cut my bank fees?
What bannanafish said, but with one addition: if you're a girl, cry. If you're not a girl, but you have a girl on the account, get her to call and cry. Seems to make some people incredibly uncomfortable and very willing to take off the charges or do anything to make you stop crying.

Yes, I've had to call about bank fees a few times. The tears were genuine, but they were also helpful. Now I'm a lot more careful. :]

Ask post: How do use corn meal?
I've never heard of self-rising corn meal! Make sure you know if it has anything else -- like salt -- added to it too. The internets tell me self-rising corn meal sometimes does.

My cornbread recipe calls for two cups of stone-ground corn meal (but I use yellow), a cup of buttermilk, a third cup of vegetable oil, an egg, and a bit of salt. (It also calls for leavening, but you've got that.) Mix it up into a batter, it'll be about pancake-batter viscosity.... [more]

Oops, I got so excited about cornbread that I missed your part about not having a skillet. (Though you should get one anyway, they are cheap, useful, and will last past your lifetime.)

My grandmama sometimes makes her cornbread in muffin tins so she can freeze them and have cornbread whenever she wants it.

Ask post: Is it Xanax or is it stress?
FWIW, I take Xanax intermittently for anxiety, and when I take it at night I tend to sleep badly (but at least I sleep!) and feel like groggy, fuzzy crap the next day.

Still, sometimes that's better than not sleeping and being up worrying and anxious all night.

I think it's just the nature of the beast.

Ask post: Bad haircut plus dry and damaged hair. What should I do?
Under "how to keep it from getting worse": you can't really keep doing the things you are doing to your hair and have it not be "dry, damaged and limp." Blowdrying and ironing your hair will cause it heat damage and roughen up the cuticle. You can add product to your hair (my mom, who does these things and also highlights her hair chemically, likes this stuff, but the only thing that will help in the long term is laying off the damage.

Ask post: Small shirts for small girls with big boobs
peep, as a related data point, we got my partner's wedding shirt fitted at Nordstrom's a month or so ago. She has the OP's issue, and we got so tired of looking for something suitable in the women's clothing stores (white, no pocket, French cuffs) that we just bought her a men's shirt and had it tailored. The shirt was of good quality and not cheap, and yes, just about every seam had to be taken in. The tailoring cost more than the shirt.

That said, it's a fabulous shirt... [more]

Ask post: Where's the pain coming from?
I've had this discussion with many men and so I can say that for me, it feels like getting kicked in the balls. Sharp pain, then dull, awful, aching, horrible pain that can last up to half an hour, and often nausea.

Yes, I've had this checked out; everything is fine, my cervix is just a delicate little flower.

Oh, come on, just eat with the tines up, since that's the eating skill you've mastered. You aren't going to "pass," it's not going to do you any good to waste your energy trying to adapt. It's not like the forks are different over there.

Knitting is good, and you can make it as simple or as difficult as you want: tiny needles, big needles, very fine yarn, very thick yarn, round, square, flat, three-dimensional, plain garter stitch or lace.

Ask post: Quick-fix short term diet, exercise plan, or supplements?
The best tip I know? Drink only water. Really. No soda, no juice, no alcohol. Iced tea I let slide every now and then, because it's only an infusion, but really? Only water. We drink so many "empty" calories without realizing it.

Ask post: Help me serve softly.
You could make it into a sort of faux-granita; that is, freeze it in a shallow-ish container and scrape the surface of the "ice" every half-hour or hour to make grainy crystals. See also: Granita.

Ask post: How to prevent cheap jewelry from changing color or rubbing off on your skin?
Yes, it could definitely be from mechanical action + sweat -- the friction on your skin rubbing away the plate.

Depending on what kind of base metal it is, you might be able to get a jeweler to re-plate it, like they do with rhodium over white gold. Might be worth asking, anyway.

Ask post: How do I keep the kids from burning themselves?
Yes, ventilation, goggles/glasses, and also the importance of Washing Your Hands. Pretty much all solder is nasty stuff that should not find its way into your mouth. A little burn will teach them to be careful; it's not a torch or an open flame. It should be OK.

Ask post: How do you act in a gay bar?
Maxwell_Smart -- I think one thing that might help "put the brakes on" so to speak would be mentioning early in a conversation that you have just come out of the closet. If someone is cruising at a bar, inexperience will count against you. But, most people will have a lot of empathy for someone going through the coming out process and might take an interest in helping you out in a friendly way.

Ask post: Where can I find Huy Fong-brand sriracha chili sauce in Chicago's Hyde Park?
If you want an excuse to go down to Chinatown, that's as good of one as any. There are several groceries down there (in the "old" part, not the new outdoor-mall part) that are sure to have it. But yeah, you can find it in your local grocery store -- I never had a problem, and I was going to the Jewel at Clark and Division (not exactly the ethnic heart of the city).

However -- if you find yourself in Chinatown, I highly, highly, highly recommend Joy Yee's... [more]

Ask post: Name that drug
Was this by any chance that article by the journalist that spent a bunch of time with some drug heads in a house, and they were scraping whatever drug it was off some white dragon thing? One of the drug-heads ended up staying in the house eating blue Otter Pops and the rest of them went to Vegas and smoked something out of light bulbs?

Maybe someone can Google it up from that, if that's what you're thinking...

Ask post: Hey there, baldy! Here's five bucks!
In the experience of a friend of mine in college, you may find it easier to raise more money if you do it for someone who may or may not videotape it for personal purposes, and/or ask to keep the hair. I'm sorry if this suggestion is offensive in any way, but I believe she made $500 -- the most she could find from any competing offers -- and she told me the person she made this deal with was not intimidating and made her feel comfortable and safe. Just another option to consider if your goal is... [more]

Ask post: Catfilter: How to stop a cat from trying to run out the door when the door opens?
Getting physically in the way, sometimes forcefully, has worked for me in the past when nothing else did. I am not excluding light kicking from the equation. If it's between pushing the cat out of the way by kicking it lightly and death-by-dog, I'll take kicking the cat.

Also: the squirt bottle may not have worked, but a Dixie cup full of water might well do the trick. I have had some cantankerous cats.

Apparently goat cheese is "fancy." A friend of mine always makes this appetizer because she knows we all love it.

-Unsulphured dried Turkish apricots (or whatever kinda dry apricots you got, but these are the best)
-Goat cheese
-Fresh thyme
-Walnuts, toasted lightly in the oven
-Honey

Mix the goat cheese with the chopped thyme. Then put a glob of your thyme-cheese mixture on an apricot,... [more]

If they are already making you feel bad -- and for something like asking for the pay to be closer to a living wage -- working there may be hell for a year.

Ask post: Professional networking faux pas
Totally with zoomorphic and pineapple on this one. I have had many jobs in the editing/publishing/magazine/wordy-people fields and in every one, networking helped me either find or get the job. It is a small, small world out there and someone's word is worth a lot. This is generally accepted in the wordy-business community.

(Of course, having a stellar resume and great references helps -- but when your great references have someone in common with the interviewer? Even better.)

You can do it by choosing to be as honest as you can be in the world you live in. Other people can take you or leave you that way, but I think you'll be surprised at the people who will appreciate your honesty.

It seems like at the root of all of this is a dissatisfaction with these different areas. No one wants to work somewhere their concerns aren't taken seriously -- where you are afraid to bring up the problems at your job. And that just makes your work stress... [more]
