Don't Cry for Me, I'm Already Dead
Wow. I really, really liked the art. The artist obviously has TONS of talent, as shown by the car-wreck drawing. On the whole, this was touching and gave me a lot of hope for the genre.

Old dangerous playground equipment.
flotson and mbd1mbd1, I was thinking fondly of this one in Clear Lake (home of the Johnson Space Center). Not my picture.
They've actually repaired/updated that one a little since my childhood -- for the longest time it was just rusty and rickety and it would lean and shake if you were up in the top. SCARY. The graffiti up there (and occasional beer cans) was puzzling and alluring as a kid.

Also: I can't WAIT to get home and put my thousands-of-dollars'-worth of pastry school to use making A Better Microwaved-in-a-Mug Cake. Brace yourself, Metafilter, for I have ideas.

Agreed, The Gooch. It was a horrible moment when I first heard that. Ugh. And they changed "Deadhead" to "Black Flag." Ugggghhhhhhhh.

This is why, living in Austin, I miss the Houston Press. Investigative reporting. For more fine examples from the Press, see these:

Neuroses of the Rich and Famous
Peter McDermott, the high price is paid whether one attends or not, with this rationale:
Most of the therapists interviewed said the rich were also far more able than the average patient to not show up for a session or give up on therapy altogether. “It starts with the way it’s so easy for them to not show up for an appointment because it means nothing to them if they’re out the $300 or $400,” said Dr. Stone. . . . Part of the therapeutic model for many... [more]

I'm not trying to babysit the thread, but the way this differs from orchards is that you are not planting one species, but multiple species that benefit each other. In addition, it's not supposed to be highly intensive farming of species that require a lot of outside chemical intervention (fertilizer, pesticide, et al.), but a number of levels of natural controls -- through selection for shade/sun, beneficial insects, encouraging birds/bees/fungus, etc.
It's not an... [more]

Totally outrageous!!!
Gah. This is GREAT. I had forgotten about those picture-puzzle cards. I was never very good at folding the corner to get the sticker off, and I remember bugging my mom to help me. I bet my perfectionism has something to do with trying to get those damn stickers to line up right with my crappy little-kid dexterity.

As someone who graduated from pastry school, I'm pretty sure I should be ashamed of this, but I don't do caramel past the "golden" stage, and I don't do caramel if I have to mix the sugar with anything (cream, butter, what have you). Scrubbing fifteen people's burnt caramel mixtures out of steel pans for days pretty much broke me of ever wanting to do that again. That and the horrible, horrible burns.
But roux? I make a damn fine DARK roux.... [more]

At least two people have mentioned artichokes. Y'all are scaring me.
All you have to do is put them in a pot big enough to cover them with water. Boil till the leaves come off with only a bit of a tug. Drain and serve with a dipping sauce (I like melted butter with lemon juice, my partner likes balsalmic vinegar with olive oil, pepper, and a splash of beer).
When you get down to the choke-y part, scrape it out with the tip of a table knife. Then... [more]

He meant "Character Assassination"
This is bullshit, and it's bullshit that they made him take it down. How many people think that Mapplethorpe or Finley or hell, even Rothko or Picasso or Monet or Mondrian aren't artists? The artist in question here didn't DO anything punishable. He didn't yell fire in a crowded theater, he didn't bring guns to the candidates' debate, he didn't hurt anyone. This kind of unpopular speech is what we are supposed to be protecting. Whether you personally think it's art or not is not the point.
