50 Greatest Commercial Parodies
I had to go straight to #1 just to make sure Bass-o-Matic got it. Thank goodness. Psyched that Jewess Jeans and Little Chocolate Donuts were in the top ten. I also have a real soft spot for the Jane Curtain Quarry Cereal commercial, as well, so I'm off to hunt for that. Basically, this is an awesome find.

University presses have podcasts
Personally, I dig hearing authors talk about their writing and the work that inspired it.
Episode 9 of the MIT Press podcast (interview with DJ Spooky) is super. Thanks for this.

Do you like bad boys?
I'm pretty sure this is the same documentary about G.G. Allin (really, how many can there be?) that I saw in 9th grade or so. It scared me. And possibly scarred me. I hesitate to ruin it for folks, but let's just say that msalt's tags on this post--heroin, blood, feces--say it all. Amazing, amazing stuff.

Wow. What school did you go to?
I didn't watch it in school. I was just indicating approximately how old I was when I watched it. Sorry to be confusing.

They Do It With... - Chez Goodman
Not only is this fantastic, it saved me an AskMe that was going to read "Give me other expressions like 'Chess players mate better.'" So, thanks. And btw, that one is way better than the chess players one in the link.

A bunch of them are patently unclever, I must say. "Singers do it with microphones" and "Skiers do it with poles" are really obvious and quite bad. The whole point of clever wordplay is out the window.

Who was Jim Crow?
Bayard Rustin is one of my heroes. What a complicated and fiercely independent man of great integrity.
Agreed and I was very glad to see him in this FPP. From what I've read/seen, he doesn't always get his due because as an out gay man, he was often overlooked, or otherwise tried to blend into the background to avoid having his "lifestyle" used against him to discredit civil rights. I don't think many people realize that he introduced MLK... [more]

I found Dykstra to be such a tool, always talking about his money and his house and his address and his lifestyle like he's the world's first ever high roller. But I just couldn't stop reading it. Great article.

I agree that conservative and evangelical Christians and people from rural and midwestern parts of our country contribute more than their fair share of bigotry. But I think it sort of does an injustice to how widespread oppression based on homophobia is to dismiss it more generally as a phenomenon of shitkicking hillbillies or even wacky religified people. Thinking about current events, Lawrence King was from Oxnard, CA. Not NYC, sure, but definitely not Dog Patch. Simmie Williams, also... [more]

And then there's Florida...
What about Florida? You mean the state where Simmie Williams was murdered? Florida is not necessarily an outlier. Which goes to my bigger point-- of course the Mason-Dixon lines stands out when we're charting all kinds of bigotry but to focus singularly on certain parts of the country as though they have a monopoly on racism, homophobia, etc., etc., is to not only remain ignorant of certain actual facts, it's to downplay... Actually, I meant "then there's Florida" in the "Fark has a special tag for it" sort of way. It is a state that does seem to have an unusually high amount of looniness in it.
Got it. My bad.

When spray-on tans attack.
This is a dumb post. And I second afu's question: "Since when is getting a (horrible) tan trying to be black?" If you're going to make a stale or ignorant post, at least don't conflate your ignorances. We're supposed be like LOLGUIDOS because of the way these guys tan, cut their hair, pose in photos and generally life their lives, right? That's already asking a lot when this isn't Fark or Something Awful. Don't conflate that with race stuff. Doesn't work.

Interactive fiction is rad and the documentary looks cool but it's a little soft focusy and light piano for a documentary about computer games. Totally the wrong feel unless it all ends in tragedy. Does it all end in tragedy?

This thread just doesn't do justice to IF if it doesn't mention Emily Short. Her work is frikken amazing, particularly (in my opinion) Bronze, although all of her interactive games definitely push the boundaries of normal text game interaction.
Agreed, Bronze is the bomb. Floatpoint as well. Also, it seems that in 2007 Emily Short's life still revolves around IF, which is cool in itself.

I totally agree with stupidsexyFlanders. This cheer is a complete wash because everyone is still spending the amount they were originally going to spend anyway. There's no material benefit whatsoever. What would really be holiday cheery is if each person tipped their barista generously.

I demand examples of "puerile misogyny" asap, nickyskye. If you're going to break out two $5 words and use them in a row, you best believe you're getting called on it. I'll take exact quotations, please. Thanks.

On that middle one I'll give you misogyny. On that first one, I think it was a misguided attempt at humor? But throw it in there, too, because I'm not actually sure.
klang, in a thread about big vaginas and herpsters, puerile and misogyny stand out as $5 words. But, if you got a higher score on the SATs than I did, so be it.

nickyskye, so, the crux of your argument is that "look them up and re-read?" Okay, done. Weak sauce, though. Commence the agreeing to disagree? As far as the criminal implications of passing on HIV, I don't really think you can indict Drew on that one. Since,as far as we know we're only talking herpes right now.
