Yeah, I got my answer, but fuck you.
I agree with Jessamyn that if you contribute answers expecting to gain satisfaction from an OP's response to you, you're setting yourself up for letdown.
That said, I do think AskMe would be a whole lot more useful if OPs came back and said "Hey, that worked great, thanks!" and "Whoa, that's not the kind of advice I was trying to elicit, let me clarify my question" or "I tried that and it didn't work" and so on. It can only add to the... [more]

AskMe != AskToBeJudged
Ouch. People are harsh. I find it interesting that the people who made those comments (especially the "I wouldn't want you as my lawyer") seem to think that anyone who has earned a JD, passed the bar and is practicing law are must always be stellar examples of clean living, virtuous choices and impeccable mental health. I mean, you can be a lawyer (or almost anything else) and have a checkered history, especially as a young person, of questionable choices and minor mental health... [more]

My story, on Metafilter
Hey, don't beat yourself up for waiting until you're 26. It happens when people feel like they're ready and sometimes that's 15, sometimes 26, sometimes 62. I think it's awesome at any age.
Also, just reinforcing the point that people can change. I had a friend who came out to her parents when she was 15 and her parents literally called her epithets to her face. 15 years later they love and embrace her and her partner. Can happen. Good luck.

This is chatfilter, AMIRITE folks?
I flagged that AskMe as pretentious, performative, GYOBF, boring, been there done that, liked-Stone-Temple-Pilots-better-the-first-time-when-they-were-called-Pearl-Jam and DTMFTA (Dump That Motherfucking Thesis Already).

Utter tripe!
Yeah, this dude sent me a hostile and obnoxious email when he didn't like my opinionated but civil contributions to a particular AskMe thread. When I read it, I thought, "get over yourself, kid" and had a laugh at a self-important child. For a while I was in disbelief that someone could get so personal and rude over differences of opinion that the would go to the trouble to MeMail me something insulting. Having read this thread I get it a little more now. Heh.

MetaFilter History
That one or two threads stemming from the girl who couldn't pay her bills because her boyfriend was unemployed but spending money tricking out his car while she struggled with debt (and they were both posting to AskMe separately and it lead to massive warring) is a pretty classic piece of AskMeFi dirty laundry history.

Godwin!
For all the very interesting and articulate comments I've discovered via the sidebar, this one doesn't stand up to that standard. To me anyway. I was really surprised to see how many favorites it got. Subject matter is neither here nor there -- as we've seen, fantastic comments can be about dogs, hard drives or Swedish chefs -- it's just that the commenter isn't saying anything particularly interesting about the subject matter (the political trajectory he described is commonplace) and it isn't... etymology questions OK?
I think the questions are fine and generate useful suggestions and ideas. The way I tend to read it is that languagehat's etymology contributions are generally useful and even when he has 'tude, like saying it's all a freshman bull session, he makes some legit points about how complicated it is to answer these questions definitively and that viewpoint is worth having. As long as his "Don't even bother asking this" answers do not outweigh his valid points, it's all gravy and if they do... [more]

hopefully nipping this in the bud
Bruce, I've never seen someone so uninformed and clueless be so adamant about how much right he is. You, sir, have attained a new level of wankery. Also, when you're that wrong about the obvious and you're a total dick about it, claiming that you're getting railroaded by a phantom feminist menace is weak sauce.
Also, please let us know what you mean by "thug" and "thug life." I have the feeling it's a euphemism for something else... [more]

Slapping someone in the face a bit too much ...
So, this dude goes, "Hey gang, This is me! This is what I'm about! This is how I do things! Your opinion please?" And people give him their honest opinions and are like "Wow, are you an unbelievable douche!" I see nothing wrong with this scenario. He asked for it, he got it. Comparing him and us to Hitler and Churchill: come on now.
As far as I'm concerned he got responses equal in bravado to that with which the question was posed.

Rethinking comment deletion
Not only is this a bad idea because of everything Jessamyn said but also if what she quoted you as saying above is accurate, wow you're a shit. And, I can say that because this is the grey and I'm not derailing anything. I mean, I get the impetus to be snarky especially when people ask things that to you have black and white answers. But if all you ever have to say is nasty things to people who are putting themselves out here asking for help/advice, well, you frequent the wrong site, buddy.

Sometimes I Feel (Like A Very Small Girl's Blouse)
...everybody, feel free to vent here.
I just got a new windshield and a local club put a postcard on it to promote Girls Gone Wild doing a taping there. It rained all night and the next morning it was stuck fast to my windshield. Even after using Goo Gone to peel it off, the imprint of the ad is stuck to the glass. So, now I have to drive around looking out a brand new $200 windshield with a permanent advertisement for Girls Gone Wild. FUCKING BULLSHIT LOCAL CLUB!

Meta Answer Syndrome
Ha, I love that "isn't friendly to the neighborhood" is listed in the prostitute evidence. Amazing. I almost never think this about AskMe because I know the guidelines about how to answer are important to the integrity of the site, but: this poster is a jerkoff and deserves what s/he gets response-wise.

Also, from reading the responses in the green and here, I can't believe how many people seem to think that the SWAT team, a pimp, and a band of child molesters are going to infiltrate the neighborhood just because of this one woman (who does such a good job at keeping whatever it is she does under wraps that no one knows what she does). So alarmist. Stop watching Law and Order: SVU.
