Should I go to law school?
Speaking as someone currently in the midst of 1L misery at a top 20 law school, I can tell you I sure as hell wouldn't be putting myself through all this if I didn't want to be a lawyer.
Don't get me wrong, I love my classes and the intelligent discourse and all that, but I spend close to every minute I'm awake either in class or preparing for class. Add to that the immense fatigue of maintaining that schedule for nine months, the insane competition to do well given the... [more]

Trust for minor in event of parent's death.
It might be helpful at this point to step a little away from the legal side. Think not about the legal instrument and what it will say, but about what GOALS you wish to accomplish with it. What is the purpose of the trust, from your point of view? What is your intent as to how the money should/should not be used?
I think it's helpful to thoughtfully and clearly articulate your reasons for choosing a trust to your attorney, as well as any details of the situation that... [more]

Woodwind ensemble masterpieces?
Like others have said, Mozart is really a master at writing for woodwinds, both in his chamber music and sonatas. Some of my favorite, though, is in his opera music.
For example, there's a wicked obbligato part for the much-maligned clarinet in the aria "Parto parto, ma tu ben mio" from "La Clemenza di Tito". Try here at abut 1:48 to check it out.

How do I file a (very late) tax return?
In terms of buying both "state" versions of TurboTax:
I work in a different state from where I live and always use TT to file federal and both state returns. IIRC, TT comes with one free state download, and then you have the option of purchasing the download of the other state - usually cheaper than you can buy the state software in the box.
Not sure this will be the case for the old 2006 software at this point, but something to keep... [more]

Yeah, what you have right here is your classic kangaroo court.
Refer to Minnesota v. Gerdes, Wisconsin v. Hanson, and Connecticut v. Tomanelli for case law on this issue.
Yes, but what do Tennessee courts say about the admissibility of radar evidence? That's what you should be concerned about; these cases from other jurisdictions are persuasive at best. The first two are not on-point from my skim, and the third talks about the calibration of radar equipment with tuning forks from 1965.... [more]

I was told that in a civil or criminal trial, the prosecutor is not allowed to serve as a witness in that trial. Is this true? If it is true, then shouldn't this whole thing be thrown out due to the judge ignoring that fact? I have searched on Google and in some code and statue databases and can't seem to find it.
The closest thing I can think of is that under common law, the prosecutor cannot testify to facts of which he or she has no first-hand... [more]

let's warm it up this winter!
Love love LOVE mulled wine for this time of year. My favorite mulling spices are from Penzey's; just get a cheap box o' wine, dump some spices and orange slices in and let it simmer for as long as you like.
Also, besides being a festive and delicious drink, it'll make your whole house smell yummy!

Seconding Daddy-O from Lush, which has worked wonders on my silver-haired dad and blonde-headed self. Like all Lush products, it's made from all kinds of great natural stuff, it's a groovy dark purple color and smells awesome.
If you don't have a store in your area, you can shop their online store here.

Listen to some Buckingham/Nicks-era Fleetwood Mac. Christine McVie is a terrific pop/rock pianist and more than holds her own against the guitars.

Are time-outs allowed?
The answer on this depends on a few things:
First, what kind of school are you looking to get into? The higher the school's rank, the tougher the process, so I'd get the best job you qualify for in your interim year. It doesn't necessarily have to be a legal job, but it's not a bad idea.
Second, how strong is your LSAT score and undergrad GPA? Like others have said, this is primarily what the admissions committee will be looking at, but good work... [more]

Target Ad Music: Rethinking the Dorm Room
Can't say I've seen the ad, but the first thing that came to mind was Feist's 1234.
Definitely new and poppy with a twee female vocal and lots of references to "change". Don't know whether it's what you're looking for, but great anyhow!

Nope, not Feist.
Hazarding a guess, but I think the singer is Butterfly Boucher, based on the tone and phrasing from the sample. However, it's definitely not a song from her first album, and I can't find any evidence that she's releasing anything else soon.

What's the best legal setup for a local chorale?
"Non-profit" is sort of misleading. Being a 501(c)(3) certified nonprofit means that any money made must be used for programming/furthering the mission of the organization, not that you can't make any money at all. It also doesn't mean that you must operate on an exactly balanced budget or alway run a deficit; non-profits are allowed to invest surpluses into vehicles such as endowments, etc. to ensure the future of the company.
I'm a professional at a large... [more]

My Cat Loves Hair
I can't explain why she did it, but my cat was a hair chewer, too, once upon a time. The only thing that saved my blow-out was switching to a shampoo that has a strong citrus smell for a time. My cat couldn't stand the smell, and didn't resume chewing even when I switched back.

I'm just giving a little whistle, is all.
I love to hear a *good* whistler if I'm walking down the street or in a park or something, but get irrationally irritated if I hear the same person whistling indoors. It might just be my hyper-mannered upbringing, but I was always taught that it was unforgivably rude to whistle indoors.

Crescend of times
Seconding anitar on listening to a little Rossini. If you're game for opera, the Act I finale of The Barber of Seville is basically a 15-minute crescendo. To sustain this build-up for so long, Rossini brilliantly plays with both arrangements of singers and instrumentation, until you have all eight principles singers and the entire orchestra WAILING at the end. And curtain.
Just awesome.

wedding ceremony music for a soprano
Seconding the Schubert "Ave Maria" but if you'd like something a little less popular, Schumann's "Du Ring an meinem Finger" is simple and gorgeous. (Okay audio here.)
As someone who has sung many a wedding, I'd love to be asked for my input on the music. I'm sure your friend has an extensive repertoire and would be more than happy to make suggestions.

Who is that person?
For what it's worth, I'd call Jenkins an "opera" singer in the broadest sense of the word... Her albums feature opera rep, but she has not (to my knowledge) performed any roles on the opera stage. I suspect her voice records beautifully, but is a bit small for the large houses without amplification.
I'd call her more of a classical crossover artist, akin to Sarah Brightman. For instance, one of the tracks on her current album is an Italian language recording of... [more]

What matters in law school admissions?
The 2007-08 cycle is just about over, so I'm assuming you'll be applying for admission in the fall of 2008.
If you are a recent graduate, I would suggest that you either find a job or do Teach for America or Peace Corps in the intervening year. I would disagree somewhat with JPowers in that I felt my work experience was weighed FAR more heavily than the prestige of my undergraduate institution. Schools convert your LSAT/GPA into an index number particular to each school,... [more]

What cosmetic brands are *really* hypoallergenic?
I'm another sensitive-skinned girl recommending Bare Minerals. I switched four years ago, and have used it every day since then with no irritation. I have since converted two cousins, a co-worker and my roommate, who all swear by it as well.
The application technique took awhile to finesse, but now it's like second nature. If there's not a Bare Essentuals store near you, Sephora now carries Bare Minerals, and they're great about teaching you how to use the brushes, etc.... [more]

Am I Jor-El?
My mother did this - she kept a journal in the form of letters written to me throughout her pregnancy and for my first few years.
She wrote not only about her love for me but about her own mother and about her relationship with my father. When I turned 18, she gave me these "journals" as a way to transition from childhood to adulthood.
I plan to do this for my child and will pass on my mother's letters to him/her as well, to preserve this family heirloom.

Help Me Help the Bride
My best bridesmaid experience happened last winter, when the considerate bride picked a "dress code" rather than a specific dress. Each of the eight bridesmaids wore a floor-length black dress of her own choosing.
Everyone looked great (and was comfortable!) in the dress they had picked, but we still looked like a group, especially with flowers, etc. I love this option for bridal parties with dissimilar body types/budgets/taste/whatever.

Starting at the top, there's EMILY's List, a large grass-roots organization that raises money for pro-choice women candidates in national and local elections. I have dealt with them in the past, and they are extremely competent and professional.
My personal contribution dollars these days go to a local women's shelter that has an especially good education and outreach program for its clients. I've found both volunteering and contributing in my community to be very... [more]

timony, I'm also in the midst of the law school application process.
I'd advise you not to underestimate the value of an enthusiastic alumni network in finding summer and permanent employment. Being a brand-new program, Drexel's well-connected alums will be harder to come by than those from Temple, Rutgers or Villanova.
I wouldn't take the lack of ABA accreditation lightly, either. Chances are, they will get accredited in... [more]
