For 2004, Bush's Aides Plan Late Sprint for Re-election.
Interesting piece on the Bush administration's re-election strategy. The GOP convention marking the formal launch of Bush's campaign will be Sept. 2 — the latest nominating convention in the party's history — in New York. "Mr. Bush's advisers said they chose the date so the event would flow into the commemorations of the third anniversary of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks. The back-to-back events would complete the framework for a general election campaign that is being built around national security and Mr. Bush's role in combatting terrorism..."

Down the memory hole!
An eye-opening comparison of how the various media outlets reported the removal of U.N. inspectors from Iraq back in the day
(1998) with today
(2002, and itchin' to fight).

Let the market decide
where
Dan Bern will play next. Bern and his band are auctioning off a private concert at the auction winner's house. You can apparently make his appearance as large or intimate as you want. Would a
dutch auction like this be enough to build a U.S. tour on?

"Islam was founded by Muhammad, a demon-possessed pedophile who had 12 wives..."
The Rev. Jerry Vines slams Islam while speaking to delegates at the Southern Baptist Convention this week. The group's newly-elected president, the Rev. Jack Graham, refused to denounce the comments since "his statement is actually a statement that can be confirmed." Hmmm... since when is 'demon-possessed' an emperical statement?
Anyone want to guess what the reaction would be if a Muslim leader denounced Jesus with this much venom?

Welcome to the Boomtown.
'Fast Company' magazine profiles the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant -- a rural Oklahoma factory that is the source of nearly every nonnuclear bomb in the United States' arsenal. Man

What Would Vissarion Do?
A former Russian traffic cop realizes that he is the reborn Son of God. Several devoted disciples agree, yea and verily. Insert own 'water into vodka' joke here. On second thought, please don't.

Do Republicans dream of electric sheep?
A new study concludes that Republicans have scarier and more frequent nightmares than Democrats. As usual, the explanation for this is split among party lines:
"What do you expect after eight years of William Jefferson Clinton?" -- Kevin Sheridan, Republican National Committee deputy press secretary.
"If George W. Bush were the leader of my party, I'd have trouble sleeping at night, too," -- Terry McAuliffe, Democratic National Committee chairman.
Wow... deja vu
all over again.

"Hi, this is Savita Balasubramanyam... er, um... I mean Betty."
A telemarketing firm based in India trains its local agents to speak not just English, but 'American.' They are assigned to watch
Friends,
Ally McBeal and MTV. They are taught to shoot the bull on baseball, basketball and (American) football.

Sopranos spoilers! (sorta)
Now that the season finale has aired, I guess it's safe to post this site. The writer actively researches rumors about the plots of upcoming Sopranos episodes, without much luck (in hindsight, he batted about .500).
My thoughts upon reading this:
1) Why would a true fan work so hard to ruin the show's surprises for himself and everyone else?
2) How could he work so hard on this and still be so wrong? The poor guy really needs some better sources.

Minor suggestion: how about adding the member number to the profile page, or informing members about how to find it?
I know it seems minor, but I never knew where to find that info. And with the member numbers starting to come up in the discussions, I started to wonder: "Where do I fall into this ranking? Am I more of a
newbie or an
old-
school vet?"
It took me several minutes of poking around MetaTalk (lurking for the answer before I post the question, y'know) before I figured out how it's done.
(Note to new folks: mouseover the link to your profile page, and it will appear in the link shown in the status bar.)
And, by the way, I'm #481 -- which I think qualifies me to say I was into MetaFilter back when it was cool. :)

Learn how to dance, part II.
A fine tutorial, with helpful descriptions:
Smackin That Ass: "... the dancer imagines a huge behind and begins to smack it, at first playfully, then perhaps even fearfully."

MS gets an 'A' for effort.
Office XP, built with the draconian 'product activation' feature to prevent piracy, has been leaked to USENET.
This version does not require an activation key, and the serial number has already been sewn into the installation.
