The horror... the horror
Raise your hand if you bit the animals head off first, so as to haste their demise and save them the pain of eventually digestion.
Well, I do always bite the heads off first, but I've never tried to rationalize it like that.

Know why Google Calendar (and most other calendaring systems) sucks? It won't let you create recurring events that happen at a period (huhuhuh) longer than 30 days, leaving women with cycles longer than that with no easy way of tracking them. Just another symptom of an engineering culture completely dominated by testosterone.

This is not a double, but a deliberate follow-up (the "original" is linked in the body of this post.) Whether a video about these things is worth a whole new FPP is debatable, but at least it isn't just an inadvertent reposting of the same article.

Gay Geeks
When I was going to university, my residential college held (and I guess still holds) an annual "Queer Fashion Show", attended by students and assorted (mostly queer) people from the Santa Cruz community.
My favorite memory of this event is standing in line and seeing a couple of portly, 60-something UNIX greybeards (you can tell by looking, I swear) arm in arm. One was sporting a T-shirt that read "IT'S NOT A BUG, IT'S A... [more]

Why yes, I do have a diorama of the JFK assassination in my house...
I'd rather see David Lynch's house, or the abode of John Waters.....
No photos, but here's an article about the Waters estate.

That guest is room is full of interesting things. In addition to the Ahmadinejad portrait and the dong clock, the bedspread appears to be made from olive drab mens' briefs. Of course The Times only calls attention to the headboard which, once again, is made from an airplane wing(!)

Death metal serves the important societal function of allowing very macho, homophobic, tough-guys to wear makeup and dance shirtless with each other.
Then what's pro wrestling for?

Lunch boxes no, but you're forgetting the lucrative squishy talking stress toy and bean bag chair markets!
Plus, those rectangular food straws are gonna sell like hot cakes - in a CUP!

Uphill it's a three-speed bike: sit, stand, push.
Push? Are you talking about some different way of interacting with the pedals, or are you counting "get off the bike and push it up the hill" as a speed?

Like archaeological finds, from which one can posit a back story.
Actually, what I love about things of this sort is that they suggest two back stories: one for the described object, and another for the author of the piece. "Make up a bizarre or impossible object" is such an open-ended prompt that at their best, these things read like the Archetypes that populate some particular dork's subconscious.

saulgoodman: actually the VALIS trilogy is "VALIS," "The Divine Invasion," and "The Transmigration of Timothy Archer." "UBIK" is a separate work. I don't blame you for getting them confused, though, the books of the trilogy are only thematically related, and "UBIK" really seems to fit better than TTOTA.

The Emergency Party Button
What pure, old-school geekery. The Ultimate Party involves:
- A black light
- A strobe light
- A fog machine
- cheesy music
- A scrolling LED sign displaying party-related messages
- no means at all of inviting guests
At minimum, this thing should be mass-SMSing a list of invitees and ordering pizzas. Liquor too if they're in area where that's possible.

That tomato game is nightmarish. "Fear"...."Dry"...."Stab"..."Father" voiced over a fireball-spewing anthropomorphic tomato destroying labeled boxes as an enormous sliced orange looms over the horizon like a dying sun? I think this may outsell Portal, and it's educational besides!

Adventures in Rechargeable Batteries
The problem with NiMH for, um, high-output applications like running little motors is that they top out at 1.3V, where fresh alkalines come in around 1.7V. This makes a noticeable difference in some small appliances.

So AV, the upshot of all this is that we should mod the thing to accept 3 AA's instead of the current 2, giving 3.6V of juice after a fresh charge, which should be close enough to the 3.2V of two new alkalines to give some extra power without smoking the motor. You'll just have to be aware of temperature and discontinue use if it gets too hot. We'll have to come up with some way to avoid making it too bulky, but it shouldn't be difficult. I can get started after work.

aubilenon: that's exactly why the real solution is supplying more NiMH voltage from the outset. It's the best of both worlds.

Ambrosia Voyeur has told me she's taking a break from Metafilter for a few days. She's chosen to set this thread aside, and while I know she's perfectly capable of fighting her own battles, this pile-on has gotten so personal and mean that I'd feel remiss if I didn't say something on her behalf. I'm not a big presence on this site, but as AV's partner of 6 years I hope I can offer some insight into what she said above.
