Flying into Texas on Saturday, during a hurricane - is this sheer folly?
Well, IAH will be shut down from noon on Friday to the end of Saturday, so that's my decision made for me. I'm weighing up whether this is worth the hassle... I figure that it will be very difficult to get in on Sunday since I still haven't been able to get through to Continental's line.

Yeah... what do you guys think? It sounds like I would be lucky to get in on Monday morning.

My flight ended up being rescheduled to arrive on Monday afternoon, so I'm still going. However, I cancelled my hotel booking yesterday (partly to free up a space for people fleeing Houston) so I need to find a place to crash on Monday/Tuesday nights now... :(

Spore on a macbook?
A friend tried installing Spore on a black Macbook under Bootcamp - it worked, but then the machine overheated and she wasn't able to play for more than a few minutes. It doesn't sound like a good idea.

Meta-Media
With all respect to Dan Hill (City of Sound), the web-based content of Lost is even more incoherent than the TV show. I like watching Lost, even though it makes little sense; it's 42 minutes of thriller/drama/mystery with occasional single-episode gems. For all that it's incoherent, at least it's quick.
However, I would never enjoy playing the Lost Experience ARG. It's just too long, too distributed, and ultimately, too inconsequential when put... [more]

Area--it's more than length x width
Not ultra-useful, but there's a nice exhibit at the Science Museum in one of the areas that's about 20 years old, with some planimeters in it: I took a photo last time I was there: http://www.flickr.com/photos/adrianhon/373899083/

Storytelling with Google Maps
Glad you (mostly) like it, guys. It's definitely an experiment, and we (Six to Start, the designers) know there are ways we can improve on both the interface design and the story parts, but it's nice to know that we're going in the right direction.
There are five more stories coming over over the next few weeks, and their stories and designs will be all completely different. Like any good album, we're going to start strong and end strong (the last story is by Mohsin... [more]

Gonzo Game Journalism
I generally don't like plugging my own stuff on Mefi, but this is an exception. In Perplex City, we held two 'live action' text adventures where we had a team of three writers 'be' the computer. While we obviously plotted the direction of the story in advance and pre-wrote things like scene descriptions, most of it was all done on the spot (including some fairly enormous plot changes). For each game, we had several hundred people watching, and people could take the 'controls' one at a time.... [more]

XBox as media center w/ OS X?
Connect360 works astonishingly well. I'm connecting to my Xbox 360 over a wireless G network, and there is zero lag is playing MP3s or movies. The setup was very easy, only took a couple of minutes on both sides.
It pulls songs from iTunes, movies from iTunes and your standard Movie folder (and subfolders), and your iPhoto library. While it sorts iTunes songs pretty well (by artist, song name, album, genre and playlist) it only sorts movies alphabetically and not by... [more]

TF2 Metafilter Game, December 1 Edition
Great game once again, guys! I really appreciate having the later game (1am for me) because I'm usually out at 7pm on Saturdays.
It would be nice to try a CTF game - I don't think I've ever played one at all on the Mefi server!
BTW, does anyone have any suggestions for good headset/mics? Bonus points if they play well with iMacs running Windows via Bootcamp.

Good books for bad girls?
The Mortal Engines Quartet by Philip Reeve (aka Hungry City Chronicles in the US) is brilliant. Here's the opening line from the first book:
It was a dark, blustery afternoon in spring, and the city of London was chasing a small mining town across the dried-out bed of the old North Sea.
It is fantasy, I suppose, but not in the magic/dragons sense, more in the post-apocalyptic sense. It's certainly in the right age range, it has... [more]

Unless you want to store stuff other than backups on it (I have a separate partition for videos, etc - although of course that partition isn't backed up!). But yes, Majick is right - you can store multiple computers' backups on the same partition.

It's OK, but I have to boot into Windows especially for TF2, so I generally don't have Steam running. Not sure whether this is common, but a more old-fashioned announcement system would be cool as well.

The quote is hardly as well-known as the Gettysburg address, and no-one was suggesting that attribution be placed directly into the middle of the post. When I saw it, I thought, hey, that's a cool post about something I'm interested in. You will note that I did not jump into the thread and say 'WTF this is stolen!'.
The only reason why I thought to mention it now is because you wrote this post praising it as the best FPP ever, mostly on the strength of its wording,... [more]

Mathowie in London
Despite the esteemed leader's hotel being in the Docklands, I still think it'd be better to do it somewhere more central. As triv says, people will be travelling some distance to get here so we might as well make life a little easier (and let them get later trains home!). I like the sound of i_cola's 'Other' locations.

Seconding russilwvong here. I have not seen a single long-lasting and interesting forum that has survived without some degree of moderation - moderation that some members of those communities inevitably disagreed with, often strongly. This is not a case of 'well, maybe that's because no-one's tried it.' They have tried it, and it just doesn't work.
