MeTa post: Where everybody knows your name...
As an avowed non-FPSer before TF2, I'd highly recommend the game, and the Mefi clan in particular. It's rotato-licious!

MeTa post: TF2 Metafilter Game, December 1 Edition
Great game once again, guys! I really appreciate having the later game (1am for me) because I'm usually out at 7pm on Saturdays.

It would be nice to try a CTF game - I don't think I've ever played one at all on the Mefi server!

BTW, does anyone have any suggestions for good headset/mics? Bonus points if they play well with iMacs running Windows via Bootcamp.

This sounds cool - I'm going to be in Toronto for holiday and I think I'll have to drop in! (with girlfriend)

Is there interest among Euro-folk for a regular weekday game in the evening, say Wednesday at 8pm or something?

MeTa post: Halloween Meetup in New York?
It would be tricky for me to declare a place, not knowing NY whatsoever. A time - any time in the evening.

Failing a meetup, I'd be interesting to hear good places to go on Halloween night.

MeTa post: MEDIC!
Excellent game, guys! I had a lot of fun despite being slaughtered like the newbie I was. I had a ping of about 120-180, which was generally fine.

BTW Cortex, I agree that we should have some email list or way to announce game times to people.
posted to MetaTalk by adrianhon at 4:50 AM on October 21, 2007
It's OK, but I have to boot into Windows especially for TF2, so I generally don't have Steam running. Not sure whether this is common, but a more old-fashioned announcement system would be cool as well.

MeTa post: The demon lived at Mach 1
Not to take away anything from what was a good post, but the text of that FPP comes directly from The Right Stuff, which I was slightly surprised not to see referenced but it's not a big deal.
posted to MetaTalk by adrianhon at 2:59 PM on October 14, 2007
Ah, you're right, the final YouTube link was from the movie.
posted to MetaTalk by adrianhon at 3:02 PM on October 14, 2007
Hey, I'm not saying it didn't work, I'm saying that it's worth knowing where the actual text came from. If it's so poetic - and it is - why not mention the source?
posted to MetaTalk by adrianhon at 3:03 PM on October 14, 2007
The quote is hardly as well-known as the Gettysburg address, and no-one was suggesting that attribution be placed directly into the middle of the post. When I saw it, I thought, hey, that's a cool post about something I'm interested in. You will note that I did not jump into the thread and say 'WTF this is stolen!'.

The only reason why I thought to mention it now is because you wrote this post praising it as the best FPP ever, mostly on the strength of its wording,... [more]

MeTa post: Mathowie in London
Despite the esteemed leader's hotel being in the Docklands, I still think it'd be better to do it somewhere more central. As triv says, people will be travelling some distance to get here so we might as well make life a little easier (and let them get later trains home!). I like the sound of i_cola's 'Other' locations.

Friday 5th is good for me too.

Agreed with dash. And we need to have a curry. It must be done.

Jouke: I think we can be confident in saying that it'll be somewhere in central London (Zone 1) on Friday 5th Oct, starting late afternoon and going on to very, very late. So book away!

MeTa post: Overmoderation.
Seconding russilwvong here. I have not seen a single long-lasting and interesting forum that has survived without some degree of moderation - moderation that some members of those communities inevitably disagreed with, often strongly. This is not a case of 'well, maybe that's because no-one's tried it.' They have tried it, and it just doesn't work.

No-one should pretend that this is a democracy around here. Matt owns this website. He created it. He... [more]

MeTa post: Metafilter Wiki: New and Improved!
Upgraded doesn't really do it justice; the old wiki (which will continue to be around for a few months) was pretty horrible, suffered all sorts of spam problems and was generally neglected. I tried to use an import script to move all the pages over to the new wiki, but I couldn't get it working properly and eventually gave up.

Instead, I moved over the most popular few dozen entries and reformatted them. A couple of caveats:

- many of them are... [more]

Ah, excellent! I was going to suggest looking at the difference between the old and new wiki 'All Pages' but you beat me to it. I don't think everything needs to be moved over, but there's a lot of good stuff I missed.

Image uploads - possibly, I'm slightly worried about file sizes (I don't have a lot of webspace) and security issues though. Any thoughts on this?

Terrapin: Already done :) I just hadn't figured out how to do make the images appear. Turns out that all you have to do is enter the image URL in the text, and the image will appear inline. No brackets, nothing, e.g.

MeTa post: You're ignorant
Sounds like a fantastic idea. I saw someone asking about alternatives to Adobe Acrobat Connect; I don't know of anything that exactly replicates the functionality, but http://mogulus.com/ and http://www.blogtv.com/ and http://ustream.tv/ are all live webcam streaming sites with chat rooms that might be able to do part of the job.

MeTa post: Cthulhu Blue
As a former maker of 'viral marketing' campaigns (ARGs to be specific) I don't know what all the fuss is about. It's not as if the post tried to conceal the fact that there was viral marketing involved, and that it was a promotion for a film. As for the notion that it's a shilling for the movie, it's not as if we don't have posts about movies, TV shows, games or Apple products around here, is it?

The real question should be, is the subject of the post interesting? If the... [more]

MeTa post: Meetup protocol: do you reveal your username, real...
My username is my real name. I generally find that most people give their real names at meetups although I wouldn't be offended if they didn't. I can understand why it's different for women, though.

As far as posting contact details on the web goes, it's worth noting that Philip Greenspun (hardly a celebrity, but well-known in some circles) has had his cellphone number clearly displayed on his highly-trafficked website for apparently 20 years. In that time, I don't... [more]
