MeTa post: Sometimes I Feel (Like A Very Small Girl's Blouse)
I have no idea who TPS is, despite reading hundreds of her comments.

I think that anyone who has a problem with anything koeselitz said in that thread is misreading him by a mile.

MeTa post: Are Favorites Bookmarks or Endorsements?
we've talked about this a zillion times

There are actually only 4 metatalk threads and the answers are:

I have bought no new music in 2007. [Shakes head, cries] :(

MeTa post: Follow-up to "Single Forever?"
Anyone say nunnery?

That seems kind of mean, I must say.

I'd think this question would be fine in askme.

Not having read the whole original thread. I'd say you are fine with not persuing a relationship. You can have a perfectly fine life without one. But, I also think you shouldn't take a decision at this early point in your life about never having one. Just let life happen and be open to it.... [more]

MeTa post: MarkovFilter: Lemme see if any American supermarkets have taken in this stuff to decorate my dorm room.
This may have been already mentioned upthread somewhere, but I have a request for this.

Don't put the usual tag line after the mangled text as if the person actually posted it, as in:
posted by DarkForest at 6:50 AM on September 12

Instead make the tag line clear that it is machine generated text based on the user's posts, like:
Markovating DarkForest's words at 6:50 AM on September 12

Or something... [more]

MeTa post: Markovfilter
I had to hit jessamyn's link 4 times before I got one that didn't talk about porn. Absolutely hilarious. Hope it gets full functionality soon. Then I can really waste time.

Throw a party

party.metafilter.com anyone?

I often like those threads because some of the answers are so witty. But I agree it could get out of hand. Maybe they belong more on metachat.

MeTa post: You're ignorant
I like this idea. I'm not really sure how much time I could commit to it, or how much I'd be able to contribute to group interactions. Could be courseware, or just working through a book together. I'd be interested in:

physics (particles, cosmology, relativity, quantum theory)
math (not too hard please, maybe number theory, statistics, martin gardner stuff)
programming (object oriented design, c++, java, c#, .net, testing and debugging)... [more]

I'd love to find a group that would like to minutely dissect Douglas Hofstadter's book "I Am A Strange Loop" or perhaps "Godel, Escher, Bach" over a few months.

Thanks, Gyan, that does look interesting.

So I'm wondering how this process might actually work. I'm picturing something a bit like this...

Let's say I decide that I want to study cosmology. Maybe I post a thread to university.metafilter.com that says "I want to study Intro Cosmology, who's with me?" Anyone interested could post to the thread saying they wanted to join and everyone could suggest courseware or other materials. Within that thread, the courseware and materials, and schedule for readings... [more]

I'd like to establish a place for people interested in this topic to 'meet'. This thread is an obvious place, but metafilter threads tend to die out pretty quickly. Is there some other place to meet that might be more obvious than this thread? Is there a place where new 'news' about this idea could be posted that would keep our present 50 or so posters interested and bringing in even more people?

Let me make a little proposal, but beware the caveats below.

I'd like to go through the Positive Psychology course here. It's Harvard so it satisfies the major institution criteria. I've already been through the lectures once, but would like to go through them again and have people to talk to about them. I wouldn't see myself as in the role of a leader and I don't really think it would be necessary in this case.

It's an easy course, no real... [more]

I suspect this is way too ambituous for many of us.

That's fine. The schedule isn't important.

No thanks, I've been eating scorn on the cob too much lately. I'm up for some hot doggerels though.

MeTa post: Not feeling good about being mostly a reader
I'm pretty new but I wouldn't dare make a FPP with the way people snark around here. I'm too fuckin sensitive. I end up regretting pretty much every post every post I do make unless it gets me some more favorites or best answers. But for some reason beyond my apparent control, I'm still hanging around.

What is "use your words" from, anyway?

I always assumed people were just imitating jessamyn from here. That's where I first saw it. But apparently it's one of those new expressions

MeTa post: Cut short in its prime.
Well, at least you can't say that THIS thread has gone too far afield from the OP's question...

I was a bit disappointed the thread got cut short, though I don't know if it had much life left to it. And it is true that it was worded as a simple math problem and for that I'll take my lumps. It's also true that it was devolving into an anti/pro nuke session, which I was not too interested in, though it was throwing off some interesting info. I should have asked "what... [more]
