Ask post: Looking for a Quebec Retreat with Urban Possibilities
Mont-Tremblant park and village is definitely worth a day trip!

Saint-Donat is very pretty little town.

Seconding North Hatley, and adding the Capleton Copper Mine of things to do nearby.

All of these places can get a bit busy with tourists in the summer, so it might be more peaceful to stay at a B&B or cottage just outside of town.

Ben Nye makes tattoo concealer in different shades. The MAC potted concealer is also very similar.

Ask post: Late night eating
Look into the Shangri-La diet as an appetite suppressant. It sounds weird, but taking a tablespoon of olive oil every evening the past few weeks has kept my hunger pangs down.

Olive oil you say? How's ... that taste?

Actually, the theory is that you consume a set amount of calories, completely divorced from taste. So I use the suggested extra light olive oil, which has basically no flavour. Again, it sounds ludicrous, but google or seach askmefi for Shangri-la and you'll see that many people have had luck with this for keeping down their appetite. It's worth a try!

Ask post: Best mineral makeup to use for acne/dry flakes combo?
While I was on Accutane, I used Physician's Formula compact mineral powder. I bought a decent quality kabuki brush for application. My face was very red, sensitive, and flaky, and the PF powder did a nice job of toning down the redness without caking. This was the only foundation my poor skin would tolerate!

Ask post: Where in the World to Go?
Banff/Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada - The Rocky Mountains, azure lakes, glaciers...I've been all over Canada and this is the most stunning spot. The Icefields Parkway is also the most scenic drive I've ever done.

Anywhere you can get a clear view of the Northern Lights - For me that's been over lakes in rural Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. The Aurora Borealis is a MUST SEE natural phenomenon.

Venice, Italy - The whole city is full... [more]

Ask post: Change The Music, Change The Show
I have Season 4 on DVD, and the canned background music is irritating in spots. I noticed some chintzy muzak mostly in the bar scenes or on Chris's station. However, where the music was integral to the plot I get the feeling it was left in. For example, at the end of the Aurora Borealis episode when Chris reveals his light sculpture.

Last year, I did one month through southern Thailand, Cambodia, and southern Vietnam. Definitely check out the One Bag site for general backpacking advice. For SE Asia specifically, I could not live without:

Chaco flip flops - Sturdier than you would think and invaluable in the heat.
Good, dark sunglasses
Good sunscreen - Not easy to find there.

Ask post: “You'll find boredom where there is the absence of a good idea”
Digital photography is a great idea, especially if you join a group like Project 365. The goal is to take one picture per day and share the results with others. It's cool because it only takes seconds if you're really tired one day, or you can spend hours if you're feeling inspired the next. I've become addicted to this as a form of visual journaling - in fact, I'm doing this for a second year in a row!

Ask post: Help Me Look More Like Ronald McDonald!
Ah, good old Pillarbox Red. I used this on my hair for about six months of my life. Getting your hair to a true, deep red is doable but the upkeep is a pain!

Start by redying over dry hair and leave it on for a good hour. You might even try blowdrying the colour in. Rinse with cold water. To maintain that sexy red, go as long between shampoos as you can possibly stand. Unfortunately, fading to pink/peach is inevitable, but a new dye job once a month should keep your... [more]

Personally, I seriously dated a man working on a scientific PhD. while I was pursuing a Bachelor's in interior design. Very, very different fields and academic levels. I felt we were intellectual equals, although he was more focused and hard-working. To flip the sexes around, my sister is working on a scientific PhD. while her fiance is a non-degreed musician. They are ridiculously happy together.

Ask post: A Fatal Attraction to Cuteness
I'm 31 and I still love the whimsy! But yeah, around age 27, I consciously decided to cut out the outright childish stuff: Emily Strange shirts, Hello Kitty watches, anything blatantly ironic or gothic...I still do fun and girly but it's essential to:

1. Mix younger and older pieces together. One crazy accessory or funky pair of shoes is enough.
2. Step up the quality. There is a big difference between the material and cut of a Hot Topic find vs. Betsey... [more]

You could try the Japanese straightening perm as mentioned above. From what I understand, it's gentle on your hair and lasts a few months. Try a salon specializing in Asian hair - they'll be able to do the Japanese process plus give you a cut suited for your type of hair.

Ask post: What treats make the best cat bribes?
My cat isn't big on commercial treats or most human food. Usually he just sniffs then turns his back! But two things he consistently goes after is Yop (drinkable yogurt, he licks the lid) and butter! I wouldn't suggest either in large quantities, though!

I did one month in SE Asia with the MEI Voyageur (mail ordered). It holds 40L - 50L depending on how much you stuff it. I would take the same bag if I was going for six months! Remember, you can mail back souvenirs, and it is SO cheap just to buy what you need over there as you go along. No need to stock 6 months of soap or shampoo!

Ask post: Travel Safely in New Orleans
I found I needed to stay aware of my surroundings when I visited in 2001. It's not necessarily dangerous, but areas can morph from touristy and crowded, to eerie and deserted if you're not paying attention. You may also be harassed by rowdy drunks if you wander Bourbon Street at night alone.

That said, you'll be fine by yourself in the French Quarter, on the streetcar, and in the Garden District alone during the day. For other areas or at night, I'd join a walking tour... [more]

Ask post: Help me play by no laundry rules but my own...
I wash nearly all my clothes (no matter what the label says) on gentle cold with liquid detergent, then hang or lay to dry. Only my cottons go into the dryer. If there are delicate embellishments, I only wash when I absolutely need to, and then I turn the garment inside-out and wash it in a lingerie bag.

The only items I will dry clean are formal wear (like a crepe dress), suit jackets, and winter coats. Oh, and suede/leather, but I don't think that needs to be mentioned!

Ask post: We're Moving to Montreal! Where should we live?!
I think Outremont is your best bet - it's kind of a mix between Westmount and the Plateau. There is a large Jewish population in Outremont, meaning lots of English-speakers. Although I wouldn't discount the Plateau altogether. While more Francophone and busier than Outremont, there are definitely quieter blocks away from the fray. I live on a very quiet block right in the middle of the Plateau, with a yard even!

For me, I always imagine someone with very clear skin and natural makeup. All those expensive skincare items, treatments, and cosmetics really make a difference here. Also, tailored clothing is paramount. I agree with someone's suggestion above that Gwyneth Paltrow is a great model for the moneyed look (I also agree she is incredibly annoying, no matter how stylish she may be).

I used to get morning weakness in my right hand as a kid, enough that I couldn't properly hold a pen and write for the first half hour of my day. It may have affected my left hand but I definitely noticed my right one, being the dominant hand. I always thought it was either from sleeping on my side, or because I used to grip my pen really hard and my muscles were fatigued. Really, I have no idea though.

Ask post: Conditioning Shampoo
Most shampoos have chemicals added to make them foam, because it gives the illusion of cleaning better! It's surfactants that actually clean your hair. I believe there are small amounts of surfactants in conditoner too, in order for it to rinse cleanly out of your hair. So theoretically you could wash your hair with conditioner but you'll never get the foam.

Anyways, a 2-in-1 is probably your best bet. The new Herbal Essences line smells delicious!

Oh! This happened to me once. It somehow got in through a skylight, and was flapping around my tiny apartment in a panic.
