MeTa post: OH SNAP LOL
I totally fell for that. I was like, whoaaaa shit...here we go. And bummed cause I'm leaving town and would miss all the ensuing festivities. But I much prefer this! Happy Birthday Matt!

MeFi post: Town Meeting! Town Meeting!
I want to hear somebody stand up and ask both candidates what their thoughts are on race relations and minorities in the US.

If you're gonna be the kind of person adamant about drawing lines, you gotta pick a side. So Sarah, are you one of (folksy) "us" or one of (elite) "them"?

Because after November 4th, if she gets her way, she'll be considered one of them. So she shouldn't be surprised if others put her on a side how they see fit until then. Then again, her take, if she'd give it, would make all the difference here. If she publicly took a stand that said, "Hey,... [more]

Rereading that, I realize it comes off very "she asked for it" and that's not what I'm intending here.

I love the "EPIC FAIL" sign, from Obama supporters, about McCain. (EarBucket's video link, above)

Secret Life of Gravy: "Obama is psychic ....or just very smart."

He's not psychic, he just knows which way the wind is fucking blowing. And McCain is neither smart, psychic, or aware of the damn weather.

MeFi post: Skin Deep.
I think this is really hard to do with faces we recognize...those come pre-loaded with judgments. For the data point, I thought all the afters, except Cera, were better. (I like Cera all 'messed up')

Ask post: cars that fit surfboards?
I drive a Mazda MP5 Wagon. I can fit a longboard inside without a passenger. And I've had up to 4 shortboards (longest was 6'6") with a passenger. You can also do one 6'4" or smaller (in a board bag no less!) with two passengers. The new Mazdas are even roomier in the back.

Honda Civics work too (back seats down, boards through the trunk).

MeTa post: Where to talk crisis stuff
Hopefully the necessity will inspire some creativity in the form of an awesome FPP. This is what I keep coming back to this place for. You guys never fail to deliver. During the staggeringly long Palin thread, I remember wondering if there would possibly another one like it to discuss politics. Look where we are now...so many threads, so little time!

Haha. No shit. That's pretty funny, but yeah, shouldn't be encouraged, for obvious reasons.

MeTa post: San Francisco meet up, by popular demand
Fyi, Bridge School Benefit concert is that weekend. It is at the Shoreline, but everything else makes up for that. I've gone year after year and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Bonus: it's a really excellent cause. If anybody is going, I'd love to meet you there!

If this meetup ends up on a Friday, I'll try to make it too!

Berkeley would be awesome. We always talk about the EB meetups, but they never happen. :(

MeTa post: Where's my question?
Hell, it takes multiple clicks to find your old posts that DON'T get deleted. I'd love to have a MeFiMail every time I posted something. But I love getting Mail from Metafilter anyway!

MeTa post: Smells like Jessamyn Spirit
Oh my god. Do you take everything in life this seriously? What happens when the tag over the butter on the shelf is ripped off, obscuring the *real* price? do you scream for the manager? I bet that parking meters really get you too...the government is blatantly STEALING my money!! And I shudder to think of the hate that must be unleashing upon me as you read this and discover TYPSO!

MeFi post: Like nailing Jello to the wall.
The first thing I thought when McCain said that is "you put the jello in a cup, stupid!" Then the second thing I wondered is who would win in a fight between a hatchet, a scalpel, a pipe and some jello. I think that Obama would win, metaphorically speaking. A-ha would be the first loser.

Ask post: Other than hope
I'm sure part of the reason it stayed is because it prevents the mods from having to endlessly delete a B.O. comment every time the joke occurred to somebody. That is to say it's true, answers the OP's question accurately, is well-intentioned, light-hearted and lastly, damn funny.

MeFi post: Literal Videos
This is so weird. The other day the knob on my car stereo broke, and in the midst of trying to wrangle it into submission, the settings got stuck. So now the only song that plays from my iPod is A-Ha's Take on Me. On repeat.

MeFi post: Sarah Palin may be a better debater than you think
fourcheesemac: "Seriously, in her answer to Couric's SCOTUS question, she blithely shot the legal foundation for the anti-abortion movement out from underneath her own legs. And the bullet passed through her foot."

Best mixed metaphor since I heard "beating my head against a dead horse." Seriously, how does one shoot a metaphorical foundation...with a gun.... [more]

Last night, in my Sociolinguistics/Narrative class, we analyzed a bunch of transcriptions from recent political speeches. We were looking for patterns and more subtle linguistic features that help to build a narrative, through identity construction via the establishment of coherence, authenticity, etc.

One particularly salient piece of text was an excerpt from the Presidential Debates last friday. The last line from a McCain turn, in response to Obama is:... [more]

"The Sarah Palin in those interviews was a little bit annoyed because no matter what you say you're gonna get clobbered."

I love this line. She's trying to disassociate...from herself.

Palin disagreeing with the Michigan move, to me smacks of "See! SEEEE!!!! I am an independent thinker! Look, I am publicly disagreeing with John McCain when it's safe to do so! We're Mavericks! Lalalalala!"

There is something (dare I say "fundamentally") wrong with this country when both the Presidential nominee and the VP nominee from the same ticket will lose their jobs and be forever banned from the field if they don't win the election.

It reminds me of a phrase I heard a while back, "When somebody is falling off a cliff, you have to ask yourself, 'how close do I want to be tied to this person?'" But in this case, I think we need to first ask... [more]

You know what I want to see? A list. I want a big fat long list of names and titles, with links on the names*, of every public figure that endorses Obama. Bonus if its organized by field (ex. Entertainment, Science, History, Politics, Art, Healthcare Professionals, etc.)

I bet that would be, oh, just a little impressive.

*Preferably the links would point to their actual endorsements, and not their bios.

MeFi post: From the original Greek, meaning 'I like big donuts'
AwkwardPause: "Reading about the Great Vowel Shift always makes me wonder: how on earth do they know how English was pronounced before 1600? I doubt any podcasts are extant."

Comparative/Historical Linguistics deals with this directly. You can learn a lot by studying written texts, but there are many other ways to figure out the sound inventory as well as the patterns and alternations (phonology)...even for languages of the oral traditions... [more]

I think its interesting to note, and I didn't see explicitly stated in the article link, is that the English spelling system was mostly solidified just before the language underwent its greatest and most mysterious sound change of all, The Great Vowel Shift. This is the equivalent of finally finishing archiving your entire hard drive on a Syquest, only to discover that everybody else decided to start using Zip disks, and eventually CDs and DVDs. Souch is lefe.

Also, not to add to the debunking pile-on, but the whole 'different words for pig vs. pork' thing is a pretty common one in a lot of languages. It has less to do with outside influences or word borrowing, and more to do with a the taboo-ness of conflating the concept of 2-and-4-legged living animals with the meat we cram in our maws. We create euphemisms for things when we want a sort of distance between a connotation that would imply something unintended (faux swears, clinical words for body... [more]

Ask post: Do you stay home when you have a coldsore?
Off topic, but relevant to the above comment about food service and shitting blood. Most kitchens, at least the respectable and safety-compliant ones would absolutely NOT have a person with diarrhea come into work. That is a health violation that can lead to serious food-borne illnesses.
