Quickest way to Metafilter Lofi
Well, now that you mention it, I just got a replacement iPhone and have been having a HELLUVA time finding the Metafilter mobile link as well. What about a place on the blue (maybe a column in the footer) that has necessary quicklinks such as Lofi, Mobile, Export comments, link to list of other related sites. This would be especially helpful when you're on a foreign computer, are showing Metafilter to someone new, or using a mobile device.

Cool enough. For the future, anybody have tips on the best Google search terms to find lofi version? I imagine that I'll probably remember the terms easier than digging for this post (or through the Wiki) to find lofi.

Why didn't you just post an A and a B in this thread and ask MeFites to favorite the one they prefer? Anyways, comment #216 is my vote for B.

If that were the case, then the subjective experiences of people across various cultures would appear as a scatterchart when plotted. But they don't. Also, it's not a test where you go "Is this blue", because different cultures don't use the same words for describing colors in their language. The colors are empirically the same, but language's use in describing them would vary, so language would not be a valid metric for comparison. Physiological response however, would be a good... This particular issue is NOT about the content of the questions being posed! It's about the intent of the poster. And I know what you're thinking...how can we know what the OP's intent was??? We can't! BUT, we CAN read the contextual cues and make an educated guess, based on our knowledge of social norms and cultural standards. Some of those cues are: phrasing, level of cooperation, amount of background info given, use of punctuation, lexical choices, style of writing, and... [more]

It's "great" !
Why do typos make people upset? Why is having correct grammar so important? What do we do about the rules that don't seem to make sense anymore (ex. two spaces after a period)? Who decides what stays and what goes, and how do we enforce it, and what is the motivation in doing so? And how do we reconcile inconsistencies in grammar rules between people, groups, dialects, books (style manuals in particular), and languages?
I'm asking this seriously, not snarkily.

I understand wanting to have pride in learning and correctly using the spelling and grammar conventions already established. Especially if you have a love of writing, the English language, and whatnot. In that respect, it IS like appreciating well-played music.
However, language is this thing we all use, a group collaboration, and it only works because we all agree enough on the terms and usage to make it functional and meaningful. For the most part, we all accept an... [more]

I like the idea of rewarding well-written and clear answers too! Can we incorporate a reward/punishment system into all aspects of the site my life? I want to be held accountable for EVERYTHING. If I walk down the street without tripping, I should get a favorite. If I say "comftubbull" instead of "comfortable", may a small red flag be placed above my head and stay with me until I give somebody else some well deserved public recognition!

"Harmful" Flag
Simply pressing a button to disagree is a passive and/or lazy form of giving advice. Writing well thought-out reasoning against bad advice takes more effort, but is much more useful to everybody. When deciding to build features into the site, I feel we should consider whether the feature will encourage the former or the latter.

Great idea. Let's find more ways to socially stratify the community! Let's officially make certain people representatives of threads involving topics of their expertise! Is an Infoviz of MetaFilter copying, stealing, or remixing?
When ethical questions about internet stuff come up, I always revert to the tired ole metaphor of rooms at a party. Metafilter is one giant party, and we're all engaged in discussion here. Anybody can listen in on what we're saying, and the whole thing is being taped...we know this when we walk in the door. Plus, we've probably all relived some of the choice words we've said to others here, and that reminds us to choose our words more carefully, or suffer the consequences. (Hey, lookie! Its just... ...The problem with spatial metaphors applied to the Internet (and they are rampant) is that the default is openness, not boundedness. You have to build in boundaries if you want them, like requiring passwords to read posts. MetaFilter has no such boundaries, and thus I see no ethical problem with re-presenting publicly... [more]

There are lots of public spaces I attend where I don't expect that the things I do or say will be recorded and reused. And if they are recorded, I don't expect that they'll be reused without my permission or in some way that misrepresents what I've done or said. Now, I understand that the internet currently doesn't work that way. But give me one good legitimate reason why we shouldn't work toward the goal of making our virtual spaces carry these same rights and obligations as our RL spaces?... [more]

Just for the record, I wasn't suggesting we instate laws and legislate behavior. That never works! I just meant that we should work toward the goal of treating people on public forums with the same safety and sanctity measures we use when we speak to them in public spaces, common sense stylie. So that we can speak freely and LESS restrictively (more uninhibited, the "norm" being that people would generally NOT take our words out of context or use them for nefarious purposes). It's not... I think it's hardly sensible to have the sort of social strictures that would be required to prevent people from publicly misinterpreting your public words. We have enough fans of all sorts of bullshit coming from postmodernism here, so I think we can at least agree with one of the decent postmodern ideas that it's the reader, not the writer, who interprets the words.
