MeFi post: Cut and Run? You Bet.
No, better analogy would be Germany, which wasn't rebuilt in a day. Or three years.

How depraved Arrest them all. No amnesty!

Kick as many out as possible; build a better wall, and let some additional immigrants in legally--to do otherwise is national suicide.

Just curious how you would know this....

MeFi post: Truthiness to Power
O'Really? O'Reilly? I like the first better.

The one thing I don't get about these events is that people other than journalists who supposedly don't like the President attend. That makes their dislike into somewhat of a joke. It you really don't like someone (or think their policies are bad), you don't socialize with them.

Those people who are railing against wind arrays far behind their back yards should really be shot. Or denied energy. Or something.

Ask post: how does the US supreme court decide which cases it will hear?
While certain disputes--between states, for example--are of original jurisdiction, 99% are of appellate jurisdiction. So, yes, the decision is arbitrary.

MeFi post: pieoverdone, star hustler
Nice post. Unfortunately, I can't help but remember Mr. Kennedy at Suffern High School. We had a planetarium, and weeks of earth science devoted to astronomy. And Mr. Kennedy tried to teach us/me the constellations, but try as I may, only the most famous ones were retainable. And this is the first time I felt really stupid and inferior.

MeFi post: Freedom of the Seas
G-d, she was annoying. Did the casting person say a "Teri Hatcher-ish" woman?

I think there are two kinds of people in the world: those who think taking a cruise is desirable, and those who think it is HELL. And I cannot imagine falling in love with someone who wants to go on a cruise.

God, I hate the idea of a cruise!

I kid you not: as long as there are large numbers of people who think "cruising" is desirerable, don't expect the world's problems to improve much. To allocate so much money and resources in this manner is just depraved.

MeFi post: Rush in, then out
Let me get this straight. You're getting on RB's case because he had back surgery and wound up with a drug problem? How many people in that situation are in jail? Or are you conflating that kind of addiction with just being a loser heroin addict?
posted to MetaFilter by ParisParamus at 8:27 AM on April 29, 2006
I think Rush is extremely talented, although I don't listen to him very often. But does he really get on people's cases morally that often? hypocrisy, yes, but morality? There's a difference.

What I really mean is, how much of YouTube's appeal (content) is copyrighted video that shouldn't be there? And what happens when things get a bit less lenient? How much of the content is legally there, and how much is just the law lagging behind the web?

"If Bush is one of the best Presidents, then there has to be some accomplishment you could point to that was of benefit to most Americans.... right?"

Not necessarily, or obviously. First, he isn't a dictator (despite what you read here on Metafilter). Second, Ask the same question for as many other Presidents as you would like.

Third: I think the Iraq War is an accomplishment, as is dealing with the Taliban, as is generally... [more]

PS: how many of your complaints about President Bush are as well directed, or better directed at your feckless Democrat Senators and Representatives, and/or state elected officials? It's just that, with a Republican in office, there's no disincentive to blame the President; remeber: there was a whole lot of Democratic support for the Iraq War. And John Kerry was yelling with all his politcal might about Iraqi WMDs--until he decided to run from President.

"You know, this discussion did bring about an interesting thought..

Despite his utter incompetence, he has accomplished one thing: Bush has somehow managed, through various methods of instilling fear, to tie a string to this country and toy with it like a puppet. The average Joe is but a consciousness dominated by this fear, and when confronted with the realities of today, can only manage to sputter the words of Dubbya's last speech...

So it's come to this. Some people are so jealous and unable to deal with the greatness and power of the United States that they attempt to negate such by attributing it all to torture--EXCELLENT.

You (some of you) just can't handle opinions that deviate from your own. Why do my opinions bother you so much? I don't think the Bush Administration is half-bad; I don't think the Iraq War is going poorly, especially considering the scope of what we are trying to do. I do think torture and abuse is an aberration.

There, said it all again.

"aeschenkarnos" The bottom line is that there aren't enough people here who aren't Bush Haters to have a serious dialog on the subject (at least not very often). So about the most I can do is state that I disagree. Saying so has value in itself.

And don't give me the "you don't site any facts" BS. That's BS. The bottom line is that I believe several thousand US soldier deaths are worth keeping the world out of the hands of Islamic monsters.

"What can U.S. citizens do to help end this genocide?"

Well, one thing they can do is support the Bush Administration and its efforts to either reform the UN, or, if that doesn't work, get it the hell out of the US so that its stature is reduced to irrelevancy.

John Bolton is a great man, and he may be our last hope to fix the UN before its time to just get rid of it.
posted to MetaFilter by ParisParamus at 3:55 PM on April 26, 2006
Do you have a great ass? I don't see the connection between your anatomy, and the need for a forceful leader at the UN. There was a smear campaign in the Senate against Bolton. He should have been confirmed, and his work at the UN since then only CONFIRMS this.

In any case, all you need is for Bolton to be better, smarter and have more integrity than the UN has without Bolton. If you seriously care about fixing the UN, you will see behind the petty politics of his... [more]

I am not aware that "the Republicans" can't stand the man. But I really don't care. I ascribe to a politics of ideas; not party affiliation. There are fools and hacks from one side of the "political spectrum" to the other.

Bolton is a good man. He is pointing out and trying to reform the UN. There's so much work that it may never get done, and reform won't be obvious for years, but I challenge you to find a more suitable UN Ambassador.
