Apple OS X Faxing of PDFs??
Tacos, at last check, it's correct English to say "the same result obtains...
Oh, and I don't think its a misadjustment. The same thing happened when I tried to fax PDFs in OS 9.2 I'm just hoping there's a way to work around this because I make PDFs for invoices, and re-send them when payment is late..

Conversion to Judaism
"I've been visiting a Messianic Jewish synagogue off and on over the years. "
Sorry, but "messianic judaism" is bullshit; or it's Christianity. You are free to do what you want, but call a spade a spade. Christ may have been Jewish, but messianic Jews are not Jewish.

In semi-defense of the Orthodox, the vast majority of Reform shul congregants view Judaism as The Cult of the Bar Mitzvah and the High Holidays and Chanukah. Again, the vast majority, not the clergy, and not all congregants. So while there are large numbers of ignorant Orthodox, one can't say the contempt for Reform Judaism is devoid of merit.

Astro Zombie, I don't disagree with you. There is much hypocritcal intramural contempt in Judaism.

As I did in an earlier thread, I would highly recommend the book "Towards a Meaningful Life" by Simon Jacobson about the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. It makes accessible some wonderful, beautiful Jewish ideas and inspired me to care about being Jewish more than I previously had. The web site Meaningfullife.com Is maintained by the same person.

A major aspect of Judaism, as opposed to Christianity is that skepticism about God is not an "in the closet" thing. Keep this in mind during your explorations.

Best options for an out-of-country Cal Bar Exam taker?
Yeah, it sucks that BAR/BRI has a quasi-monopoly, but get admitted, and then sue them with a class action thing. Odds are, there will be much stuff on the bar exam that wouldn't even be covered at a California law school; you're at an even much greater disadvantage. Pony up, get the tapes/dvds, and good luck!

Yet another bicycle question...
I would go with a road bike for that distance. Go to a good bike store, tell them your budget, and spend most of your energy finding a combination of frame, saddle and handlebars that fits you. Also an extra $100-200 can make a big difference in the components on the bike. And better components will last longer and feel good longer.

GMail: POP'ing ALL of your old e-mails?
I did enable the pop for all mail, but the GMail settings page still references February 27--that's what prompted me to askmefi in the first place.

Is it possible that Gmail only allows you to POP mail once? By the way, this is what I see in the POP settings:
1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since Feb 27
Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)
Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on
Disable POP

Oh! GMail doesn't enable POP for archived mail; once I put it all back in the In Box, it all showed up!
Thanks for the sounding board!

You can't turn the clock back, and apparently don't want to, but had you called the guy, his reaction may have been quite different. I'm about your age, and even for me, written communication (save, perhaps, e-mail) is associated with very serious, intense messages; someone younger, even more so.
So he may have just gotten frightened/thought you were being too intense.

Why Does Burned Coffee Rule?
Delmoi, but what would they lose from having a coffee that wasn't so dark? No one can say they're not a phenominal success, but wouldn't they sell (even) more coffee with a lighter roast?

I guess that's what it's like to not like in Brooklyn.
By the way, what Starbucks styles are "mild" still tastes burned to me. Also, darker roast coffee has less caffeine, not more. Also, I actually find their coffee to have significantly less caffeine to it than coffee I like. Also, I don't drink... [more]

Has anyone yet coined the term highest common denominator (=highest price, etc., highest aethetics that don't turn off/threaten too many people)? I guess that's what Starbucks does. And it is true that their strategy of ubiquity pays off (and if only I had the capital in 1984 to match my idea!), and for a while I lived in a village in... [more]

FWIW, I don't hate Starbucks. I go there; the competition isn't uniformly better; I don't find Starbucks offensive the way I find fast food joints; the founder should be admired for seeing a market and conquering it.
By the way, what has the reception been to Starbucks in Europe? If memory serves, the comfy place beacon aspect should have gone over at least as well there, no?

How do I keep headphone wires from fraying at the plug?
I confirm that the poster's problem is not unique or usual.
Back when Walkmen were the thing, I used to wrap the heaphone cable around the device to avoid stress on the plug.
PS: do those barrel-like structures in computer cables exist to avoid the issue being discussed here?

The cheap answer is that they are, themselves, half notes, me thinks. As to why that aren't considered such is a mystery to me, too; a corollary to "why are there eight notes in our Western musical scale"?

Language learning tips!
I learned French largely pre-computer, so I can't say for sure I would do the same now, but I suspect 3 x 5" file cards are one of civiliation's greatest tools for learning words and language. They're portable, cheap, and allow you to focus on what you need to learn, and then put that aside and continue focusing on what you haven't learned yet.

re: AM radio reception
Has this been the case in your local market, or in other locations too? My guess is that it has to do with most of the stations being concentrated towards the low end of the am band; not sure beyond that.
