Thread 50250 should be used to indict, convict, and ban several Members for a grotesque lack of civility in the ad homonym realm.

At least in Firefox for Mac, the layout of Metatalk is weird. There's no lefthand margin; and the top of the page contains these links, etc.:
MetaTalk is a discussion area for topics specific to MetaFilter itself, ranging from bug reports to feature requests to questions of content. The posts are sorted by date, and tagged by category.

If you go to LittleGreenFootballs.com, you'll see at times, at the top of your browser "LGF, Banned From Metafilter." Does anyone know what that's about?

Would it be possible to move the most recent end of long, breaking story posts, like the NOLA one unfolding now into a separate thread, say the last 50 posts or so? Refreshing a long thread takes too long, and wastes bandwidth.

I have decided to be kinder and sweeter on Metafilter. Less annoying, too.

Air America is apparently broadcasting from the Tea Lounge in Park Slope (on Union) this Friday morning. I plan to be there with my
Little Green Footballs.com t-shirt on to deride them, and stir up some....coffee. That's how you'll recognize me.

Just a big shout out of thanks to all the members, even FFF who, in so much detail and depth, discussed my
lighting issues earlier in the week. I'm not sure why, but Metafilter attracts and retains an amazingly smart, broad base-of-knowledge group of people. Truly remarkable.

It's really frustrating that so many Mefi people don't have e-mail addresses posted on their member page. In fact, it's really inexcusable given the ability to obtain free secondary and terciary e-mail addresses.
While no one can be forced to read their e-mail (or have the Mefi address mails forwarded to a primary one, I think Matt should require an e-mail address to be posted.

I am going on sabbatical from Metafilter. In this political season, this place has become too close-minded, too vulgar, and too filled with people who complain. [MI]

Not just minutes, but HOURS have gone by, and no one has created a post regarding the new iMac. This seems bizarre for Metafilter. Am I missing something?

Since I'm able to post this, I have to assume I have not been banned from Metafilter. And yet, using IE for Mac Classic, I cannot post on Metafilter.

I don't come here very much any more [no time; the Chomsky crowd nauseates me trop] but could someone please offer a possible explanation for why Metafilter no longer looks the way it used to on my IE5.0 for Mac? No more Verdana; more clean, uncluttered look....? My cookies were deleted and replaced; customization is as it should be....?

Is Metafilter IRC gone for good?
Is there now a quota of nearly zero on political and geopolitical threads? I never got the memo.

Am I just imagining it, or is there a lot less posting going on to Metafilter in the last few days. This is not necessarily bad, but the political threads are almost absent, and just the number of contributions is down. The Ebbs and flows at this joint fascinate me.

With the sideblog open, there is currently a vertical gap on the front page running the entire vertical distance between the last line of the description in the "Today some of us thought it..." post, and the line with Miguel Cardoso line. The gap disappears in the sideblog is closed. This is in my Mozilla for PC.

I am very impressed with the new server. One bug: Mefi blue and Metatalk grey/brown are not nearly as vivid as they used to be. If I enable colorsync on IE, things look fine, but that was never necessary before "(and AOL seemingly prevents me from keeping colorsync on). Can this be corrected?

Why not a Metatalk category for double posts. Apparently, some people get off on recognizing them; refering to a post being a double shouldn't be on Metafilter ever.

OK, assuming I'm not being banned by the Management, I can no longer use Mefi in Opera or IE 5.0. When logged in, all I see is a sea of blue or a sea of brown (Metatalk), on what appears to be a huge Web page. as I scroll down, single words appear very VERY far apart. Is this a cruel joke?

A sensor which would prevent two posts within an interval of, say, 30 seconds or 60. This would unintentional double posts such as mine in the tactical nuke thread of a few minutes ago. (I tend to push elevator buttons more than once also)

I'm trying to see if Opera for Mac might be something to switch to. But, at least in Mefi/Metatalk, my font Metafilter font preferences, while they seem to register in "Customize" Mefi, do not take hold. Is there something in Opera: I can't get the font smaller; and there's too much space between lines of text. Is there something I'm not adjusting in OPERA?

I think the upper lefthand corner Metafilter logo should have above it "Matt Haughey's'..." Kind of like
Don Kirshner's Rock Concert.
(I don't have the graphic design prowess to propose this visually).

Should I be looked down upon because I rarely post material (other than my own wacky point of view)? I am currently a freelancer and have a girlfriend, so I don't have a lot of time to discover interesting stuff on the Web (at least before everyone else has). Do I get deficiency-filling credit for organizing the NYC Mefi meet this Thursday?

Exist-there some clever way to direct e-mail back to an offensive spammer so that they will get the message; something like a denial of service attack/overload? The spam is really getting to me these days

I would, again request the ability to have threads display in reverse chronological order, for ease of following new contributions. Together with an option to only display the the most recent contributions (say, last 10 or 20 within a post) there would be considerable server conservation.

There's nothing technically wrong with it, but how about fewer posts which promise grandiose
unified political or social field theory or promise to upset your preconceptions about some subject? Explaining "everything" is admirable, but let the readers decide for themselves whether the world has just been
bouleversé. (examples inside).

On the heels of this thread, I would bid January 24th, 25th, and my preference, 27th, for a Brooklyn/NYC Mefi Meet. Blah Blah remains my preference: it's fairly quiet on Sunday night--and around the corner from ME. D I S C U S S.

From what I understand, Mefi began as a forum to discuss Web design, whereas it has become a forum to discuss news, ideas, whatever, with a Web site almost incidental to the discussion. Opinions as to when this happened; a specific day or week (these kind of questions interest me)? Also, as much as some people bemoan this evolution, wasn't it inevitable?

There seems to be a new virus out there. The last installment I received (about 20 overnight over several accounts) seems to corrupt the sender's e-mail address so that you can't alert them as being a victim.

Since my last proposal was hijacked by others such that I was unable to attend, I will again propose a
Mefi Get Together in NYC. But this time I'll go out on a limb, proposing a rough date--a Thursday or Friday evening in December--and the venue--most controversial, I suppose--the Blah Blah Lounge in Park Slope, a 24 minute F Train ride from the Broadway Lafayette stop. Cool place; a fireplace, a few couches; a sense of adventure in coming to the Slope (see the Statute of Liberty and Ground Zero from high above Brooklyn!). Also, if anyone wants to fly in from Europe, it's about 100 minutes from JFK on the A Train + F Train (very convenient).

The
America's Terrorist Training Camp thread prompts me to suggest that the obscenity filter be turned up on Mefi and be more of a basis for being "evicted." Obscenity is an excellent predictor of uncivilized, vapid, ad hominem debate. Not a ban on it, just less. Please.

I don't think Bas67's recent deleted post linking to the Onion should have been deleted. I think that was good stuff. I was going to post the comment:
They should translate that text into the appropriate language(s), put it on leaflets, and drop it throughout Afganistan, Syria, Lebanon and the West Bank. It might make certain individuals think twice.
Was it really beyond the Pale? Can someone educate me? Or was it the material around the post on that page (which I didn't read)?

Again, a

the computer. Does anyone know anyone who owns or has connections with such a venue?
