Got my mirrahshades on.
Bl1ink/w0mbat- they look like those but without the nose indentation. the lens extends right across that concave area where it is on the ones you linked.

MaddyRex - almost! They're a little taller and sit a little tighter (more curved to the skull.) Do these things have a name?

MaddyRex - Closer still! They had no rim, however. Just a big chunk of curved lens. Thanks++ though!

Finding a summer job in New York
I recently started working in the guts of a temp agency in NYC. She honestly can't go wrong just shooting her resume off to a few of the no-fee ones (and possibly going on the interviews if you have to). If you're skilled enough, you can say 'no' to as many offers as they give you and still be regularly considered for work, if you're skilled enough.
However, the labor itself (at least at my agency, which focuses on clerical work) has a tendency to be barely-entry-level... [more]

Help me find a bandwidth monitor.
What NetMeter does in the application window is exactly what I want it to do, but in the system tray. It doesn't seem to have that option, only gauges.

Temp or retail
I've been a full manager in mom-and-pop retail stores (which have a tendency to pay better than corporate ones and have much, much freer environments) and have been paid less than the starting wages for temp jobs. I've had people interviewing me not believe the wages I was paid for almost singlehandedly running a small business, even though those were standard wages where I worked.
Funny enough, I just interviewed at a temp agency and was asked if I wanted to work... [more]

LibraryFilter: Should I make my goal to be a systems librarian?
Thanks for all the advice so far, guys. I guess I should just start boning up on programming on my own and try to score a gig out of/during undergrad, then? I've already consigned myself to the fact that I'll probably be spending late undergrad doing schoolwork, working a job and volunteering at the library if I cannot get hired at a library. If I do, can I assume it's the page -> staff -> specialized staff (or possibly just starting off as staff) route for me? The library where I interned,... [more]

Thanks for asking this. I don't have anything to contribute but I'll be in your same position pretty much a year from now. Minus the job availability and hireableness. And the grad school part. Heh.

Diphenhydramine Addiction?
I used to do the same thing myself, my doctor told me taking Melatonin is somewhat healthier for sleep problems. It obviously won't help for the sinus and congestion problems, but it's worth a shot.

Should I tell my girlfriend I've had gay sex before?
This seems to be weighing on you a whole lot more than you being afraid of her reaction.
Figure it this way: if she does flip her shit over the general idea of it, is she really the girl you want to marry? (NB: Not a rhetorical question.) I'm sure you don't want to lie to her and these things have a way of making themselves known.

Adult. (imagine Kraftwerk as a punk band gone evil)
Fischerspooner (the show is lip-synced but they acknowledge
it and just put on an AMAZING dancing-light-etc. show)

Gogol Bordello (they play forever with more energy than you'd think was possible and everyone is dancing like crazy)

Where did all this data traffic come from?
You can try running a packet sniffer (Ethereal is pretty user-friendly) if you notice another spike and see what's going on. Along with the process tools suggested above, you should be able to verify what exactly is happening on the network.
Also, find out your upload speed (wired and wireless) run the math to see if you could have uploaded that much in the length of time that NetMeter says you did (if it does. If not, try switching to a more sophisticated bandwidth... [more]

And s-so I told him, n-no, man, y-you can't keep that h-horse!
The biggest tip I have is avoid coffee (or anything else caffeinated, or any stimulants in general), if you're prone to babbling and fucking up your words.
While asking him direct questions is a great idea to feel him out if he's particularly shy, keep in mind that some people have no problem with someone else doing more talking than they are.
If he's nerdy and shy, he just might appreciate that you've got a whole lot of stuff going on up in... [more]

Recommendations for Game Controller for Mac
I agree with Tim. There're specially designed left-hand (if your right is on the mouse) controllers for easy access to stuff in FPS games; they look like small keyboards and generally just give you quick access to weapon change buttons/movement keys. However, you're losing out if you're not playing the games with a mouse (or trackball). Native computer FPS games are pretty much built for that.
If you're really desperate, RadioShack sells a $10 PS2 controller -> USB... [more]

Oh, good. The thing that Kristan posted is exactly what I was talking about (my google-fu was weak on that one). A friend of mine swears by it for FPS/TPS games.

What is causing my laptop slowdown?
Thanks for the advice, flabdablet, I think I'm going to get some thermal grease and stick it on there. I've read about that in a couple of places and it actually sounds like that could be the exact problem (fans constantly on, physical processor abnormally hot, etc.).
It's actually plugged in about 95% of the time. I'm pretty used to desktops which is why I haven't taken the thing apart to give it a solid cleaning yet: I have no fear going into a desktop, but these... [more]

chrispy/sophist - i'm actually running both, and they have definitely been a help, but occasionally the whole system will be very, very barely responsive and cause me to be unable to get to either one.
14580 - sadly, my build isn't one of the ones under the scope of the settlement, or then new lawsuit. any guides you would personally recommend for applying the thermal grease?

I don't know if anyone is going to come back and read this, but I blew some air into it and am running the cooling mat at high speed regularly. I actually managed to get, on average, almost a 20 degree drop in certain situations: high load used to be 140+ is now 120 and regular runtime went from 120 to about 110, and even under 100 when I manage to get the laptop into somewhere with decent air circulation for all the vents. Thanks guys!

Depression and college
I'm going to agree with the above. There are always options. Get out of there, it's clearly not the environment you need to be in right now. Your mental health matters more than anything else you've mentioned. Even if it's just suicide ideation now, god knows one night some little switch up there might flip and you'll end up doing the unthinkable.
Go anywhere. If you parents won't "let you" withdraw, get out anyway. If they balk, you'll find yourself needing... [more]

What are good reasons for requesting a single room in college?
Sleep issues would be the best way to go, IMHO. Something along the lines of being unable to sleep with another person in the room (if it's that kind of dorm).

olinerd - AFAIK, there's numerous colleges that force you to spend your first year in the dorms. An "I like to be alone" coming from someone that's never been forced to share living quarters can slowly but surely turn into a "jesus christ, I'm going insane."
Figure the college should be able to tell the difference between a legitimate (doctor's note) health excuse (psychological or physical) and let the people with those excuses live solo first. If... [more]

audiocassette tapes in NYC?
I don't mean to derail the question, but does the cassette player have an auxiliary line out? You might be able to plug a fifteen dollar CD player into the thing while you're on shift. We did that at my old store when the stereo system CD player died and we couldn't afford a new one.

Post-Weed Pee
It's a mix between time perception and not feeling like you want to take a whiz until you put pressure on the bladder. If you're sitting around stoned for an hour or two, you might be inattentive enough to not realize that you really have to go until you get up.
