Ask post: Recommend some non-white kids' books
Via librarian friend (some of this is mentioned in the thread): Nikki Grimes, Cheryl Willis Hudson, Ezra Jack Keats, Patricia McKissack, Julius Lester. Also some actors have some great picture books: Will Smith and Spike Lee. A good guide is the book: A to Zoo: Subject Access to Children's picture books. There is a section: Ethnic groups in the U.S.--African Americans that gives loads of suggestions. I also like a previous text book: Children's Literature, Briefly (Third Edition) There is a... [more]

"It can be argued that hallucination proneness and psychosis proneness do not overlap in the nonclinical population but can both cause distress separately."

Ask post: Uninsured: Can't Pay for Needed Surgery
Check into your state's high risk insurance pools (which recently just got even more funding).

"The grants will be used by the states to offset losses that they incurred in the operation of high-risk pools, which are typically state-created non-profit associations that offer health coverage to individuals with serious medical conditions. Grant funds also provide support for disease management for chronic conditions and premium subsidies for individuals with lower... [more]

Retailmenot helps me out from time to time. If you know about SD, you likely know about FatWallet. I cut down on expenses by trying to remember to check one of those sites before making any purchase.

Ask post: Scrabble
Also remember to play cool long words whenever possible, even if a dull play would score slightly higher. It looks good and opens up the board, which makes the game flow better. Don't be obstructive and block the triples because it makes you no fun to play. If you follow Askr's advice you might never get laid again.

I can't echo this enough. Just play and have fun. Try to play cool long words - it opens up the board and your rack. This is how I play... [more]

I'm going out with a new lady who is very good at Scrabble.

That sounds like she's good. That doesn't sound like she's a tournament obsessed diehard. It would be nice if the O.P. could clarify. I'm with AfroBlanco. Ask post: How to spend a minute of free time?
Are you allowed internet use? I just kind of assumed you weren't, but if you are and you want to do something productive, go through all your old emails or texts or otherwise clean up a set of files. I guess if you got really creative, you could dump your "my documents' folder on a flash drive then open it at work* and delete files cluttering up your home computer.

Yes, that was my fault. The article said it was a 9-page report, and like a fool, I linked you to a 94-page report. I have the report (it was in the same correspondence noted above) - check your mefimail.

Yarg! It be to fight the Emerald Ash Borer.

"The Ohio Department of Agriculture has placed 7,500 purple traps around northeastern Ohio and other parts of the state where the Emerald Ash Borer has not been seen. The idea is to make sure the borer hasn't moved beyond the quarantine areas. The purple traps that are hanging from trees in our area would attract the borer because of its color and a pheromone it releases. The borer flies to the trap and get itself... [more]

Can you describe the setting more? Will you be outside or in a conference room or what? If you're in a conference room, you could just use phones/speed dial. But if you're just going to be in a big open area, that limits solutions. 10 teams of how many people? 3? 7?

DV Article referencing Jacobson & Gottman's "Pit Bull" & "Cobra" categorizations. Citing this part because the violence only has to be suggested or implied once it has actually happened:

Ask post: Mystery on 5th Avenue - real life puzzle ideas?
Those are pretty substantive restrictions. The only thing I can think of is to incorporate self-made labels into the puzzles. Everybody has a multitude of products - toothpaste, lotion, shampoo, windex, etc - in their house. It's problematic because those things will get thrown out when they are empty, but since it's such a fertile ground for things you could do, and you want it to be reversible/non-permanent, I thought I'd mention it. The labels would probably be obvious as hell for you,... [more]

Ask post: What do I do with those fancy gym machines?
Go to the gym at some time it's dead (you could ask the employees when that is) and just test the machines out with low or no weight on them. They usually have diagrams on them. I got Strength Training Anatomy from the library after reading that AskMe, and that helped too, to see what exercises work which muscles. And it looks like there's a Women's Strength Training Anatomy book too (put in your zip code and it'll tell you the closest library you can get it from).... [more]

A spin move. She's playing good defense, but maybe get a friend (male or female) of yours to pick her off and they can hang out with her online and off. Meanwhile you go the other way and see if you can get some points with someone who isn't making sure you're never alone with them.

Ask post: Avoiding Death by Chocolate Chip Cookies
Forktine, it's definitely chocolate chip cookies, though I can eat all variations of chocolates and sweets.

adipocere, I am drinking gatorade sometimes, but a considerable amount of water too, and I don't find gatorade to be salty at all. Plus it's really when I'm not working out and not drinking gatorade that I really really want the cookies.

What kind of chocolate cookie?

Any kind. The standard cookie with chocolate chips in it. No particular brand, though I obviously prefer fresher and better. The kind with dough pre-made, made from scratch, the famous store bought ones in the blue package, famous amos, generic grocery store brands - it pretty much is across the board. Except the ones at subway and quiznos. Those chocolate chip cookies (not the double chocolate ones, I like those at... [more]

This works out to 2-4 cookies a day.

30 is just the worst I do (and because that's typically the maximum amount of cookies that either come in a package, or that can be consumed without it just being disgusting). The other days I have 3 or 4. It's an addiction. I wouldn't have bothered with this if it wasn't a constant thing - eating cookies, thinking about eating cookies.

what do you think is in chocolate chip... [more]

Ask post: How can a "lazy" person develop successful work habits?
I have many of these same issues. Focus is what you want. So you need something to focus on. Something concrete. Find something or someone or some situation that you're driving for.

It's like working out, for me. When I just do it to do it, I'm not incredibly motivated. But if I am to be in a sports tournament, if I am to participate in an athletic contest, or race somebody, or anything competitive, then when I don't want to do anything but bust out Megaman, I work... [more]

Jesus Walks isn't happy rap I don't think. Kanye in general is not happy rap. Workout Plan is funny in places I guess. Touch the Sky - not really happy to me. More epic and vibish. hal_c_on is right - might want to skip most of this stuff. If you're going to pick an artist or group to listen to, clearly choose the De La (Soul) and I'd skip most Kanye.

Here's some De La not on their albums, cause it's on Latifah's (All Hail the Queen):

Is it the way the electronics interplay with the more acoustic-sounding elements?

I like it, spec80. It's instrumental only though, and I'm looking for songs with a vocalist. Thanks to your boyfriend, he's right - that is along the lines of it (if only there was a singer). If they'd put a singer on that track, they would have had to lope the instrumentation in and out more, I think, and then it would have been exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you and your boyfriend.
