Ask post: To Here Knows When, When You Sleep
Your foot falling asleep for 10 minutes doesn't pose any health threat, but if you were to cut off circulation for an extended period of time -- several hours -- you could suffer serious nerve damage.

- Howstuffworks
As long as you're not meditating for hours at a time, I think you should be OK.

Ask post: Starting a company in a State different than my own?
Ah, thanks for the advice and link. My MetaSearching didn't work out and I missed that one.

Ask post: Help! I don't want a hole in my thumb!
I grated part of my thumb off once with a Microplane. I lost the flap of skin, and the wound was a few millimeters wide and deep, but as it healed (pretty quickly), it filled out, fingerprint and all.

I can't even remember which thumb. YMMV.

Ask post: Laptops: Apple MacBook Pro versus Sony Vaio/Dell/Toshiba. Please help me choose.
Get the Mac, run both. I had a dying 17" PB G4 and just upgraded to a middle-road MacBook and can't believe the speed difference (on a product that costs 1/3 less, too).

People are suggesting Parallels, but I've been happier with VMware Fusion (which will have a better "Coherence" mode of its own before it reaches final). Virtualization software is fast, but if you must, you have Boot Camp on your side for full-speed 3D-accelerated Windows.

Ask post: Styrofoam Pop Cups in Seattle
I can't imagine why Coke in styrofoam would taste better than Coke in paper/plastic. Different soda fountains can taste differently (syrup:water ratios, quality of water, etc.), so this could be the issue.

Have you tried an at-home experiment? Divide one can over the three cups, and do a blind taste test; report back here.

Ask post: Music for my ear
10ish minutes might be preferable, eh?

I'd try Salonen's "Helix", recently premiered, seen/heard here:

Ask post: mac virus?
Over the din: "There are no self-replicating viruses for Mac OS X. Only a Trojan or two have appeared for the system in over five years of its existence, and they required the user to think he was pirating software and to open the 10 kilobyte Microsoft Office installer."

On that note, Office macros are cross-platform, though most malicious instances are not programmed to take OS X into account. Just turn off scripting.

Ask post: Name that drink.
Even if there were a name for it, if it were established somewhere, odds are most bartenders have never heard of it (try ordering any random Webtender drink by name).

Besides, it's more impressive if you confidently list off the ingredients: a succinct "Scotch and ginger ale with a dash of bitters." (Compare this to the baby-faced bloke who orders a "Manhattan" because it's a "Manhattan," not because he knows what's in... [more]

Ask post: A Tale of Two Pretties
Based on your descriptions, I'd go with Marian: humor and comfort are key in relationships.

Then again, that's a hypothetical and yours, perhaps, is real. And the coin flip; so it goes.

Ask post: mmmmmargaritas!
The simple* Margarita:

3 parts white** tequila
1 to 2 parts triple sec
1 to 2 parts lime juice
simple syrup (optional)

*It's all about the quality of ingredients. Use a decent tequila (you don't need a very expensive one), like Sauza or 1800, and use fresh lime juice. Add simple syrup only if you have to, i.e., if you're used to sweet Margaritas.... [more]

Ask post: What drinks go with seafood paella?
Vinho verde would be nice.

I'll also second "Tinto de Verano." Gaseosa, I assume, is a carbonated beverage. You can just add some nice sparkling water (seltzer or club soda are fine) and freshly-squeezed lemon juice.

If you want to take it a step further and approximate sangria, add a splash of triple sec (or other, similar liqueur), brandy (optional), some simple syrup to taste, and some fruit (maraschino cherries, more squeezed... [more]

Hmmm, actually, I assume you've already prepared the sangria. Tinto de Verano may be redundant, then. Go with a dry sherry and white and/or red Rioja.

Ask post: options for watching tv shows "on demand"
TVShows. Yes, it works with torrents, but install SafePeer and you should be fine.

Really, though, if you pay for cable, it might be cheaper to go the $1.99 iTunes route.

Ask post: Got the weights, NOW what?
You might want to have a personal trainer at least walk you through the motions and design an initial training regimen.

Machines are designed to go through specific motions to give a proper workout (and even then people misuse them!), but free weights give you more freedom to err. If you don't have someone there to tell you what you're doing wrong, you could hurt yourself more than help.

Ask post: I feel as though I've become lazy and complacent. How can I get back to my "old self"?
Don't go alone on these changes. If you find yourself lacking the discipline to do things yourself, talk to your wife about things and see if she'll help you see things through.

Don't make changes too extreme. Start with small and enjoyable things. Make things tangible by writing them down.

E.g., put time aside specifically for exercise and do exercise that you find enjoyable (biking? a sport like tennis?). Vary it as needed. Eating better?... [more]

Ask post: ChampagneFilter: glasses or flutes?
pineapple: Champagne is also pretty much reserved for weddings, galas, and movies ;)

phaedon: The champagne glass (not flute) is also meant to be held by the stem (as are all wine glasses, minus the at-the-moment-too-cold glass of white) and is also narrow (though not as narrow, sure).

I just wonder if there would be a difference with aromatics and flavor between the two. Does the slightly-wider glass promote better aroma... [more]

Thanks guys, this all makes sense. As for the champagne reservations: I agree, we shouldn't have any. Drink and be merry, whether holiday or Tues.

Ask post: Induction cooktops - go or no go?
I'd almost prefer a standalone unit to an in-built range (or, if ever available, a hybrid range: half induction, half gas). Induction is not always preferable to gas.

Some of the best pans out there just don't work on induction: copper and aluminum (magnetized stainless steel clad pans are available through All-Clad and Demeyere, but these units are usually thinner than their non-magnetic counterparts and have lower heat capacity).

An induction... [more]

Ask post: Best way to slice fresh mozzarella?
How "thin" are you trying to cut it? Mozzarella should be cut rather thick, things considered: with heat and time, it can start breaking down into ricotta-like curd, which isn't nearly as nice in the end. By "thick" I mean maybe a centimeter, maybe more. Follow the other advice: serrated knife, don't worry about evenness, mmascolino mentioned earlier that it melts outward and evenly anyway, just give it enough thickness to do so.

The real question,... [more]

An amp, speakers and volume.

Please check with any nearby neighbors, first. The guy below me does just this, and even I can decipher the lyrics through solid oak and then some.

Ask post: How to best preserve an open bottle of wine?
A few people have mentioned the fridge. This is fine for whites, but Harold McGee (the Curious Cook) advises against this when it comes to red wine:...chilling causes dissolved substances in more complex red wines to precipitate into solid particles, and this causes irreversible changes in flavor [emphasis mine].Refrigeration doesn't make much sense in general with reds outside of a quick chill to cellar temperature. After extended refrigeration, you have to wait for the... [more]

Ask post: TongueFilter: Why does my tongue burn so easily?
Is it possible that you have Geographic Tongue?

I don't think so. I love spicy foods and find they cause no irritation. The only white-bordered, geographic appearance my tongue gets is when blisters show up after a burn.

Ok, this will probably sound odd, but I find that making sure my tongue/ lips/ roof of my mouth are moist with saliva before trying hot foods or liquids makes a huge difference in whether I get... [more]
