MeFi post: Beware the machines
I hope they're working on the time machine next, but, y'know, after they finish the carousel.

MeFi post: I bet they hate Star Trek.
I've come to understand that he is a grammar curmudgeon. Proofreading1 curmudgeon2, eh, not so much.

MeFi post: Magic Fruit Turns Sour to Sweet
A friend of mine is actually growing his own miracle fruit plant. He may have got the seeds from the above-mentioned Farmer Mozie. (I remember that they were shipped to him from the East Coast) The guy was really nice about sending him the seeds - since the fruit contains the seeds, he simply sent my friend a boxful of the fruits. So, instead of having to wait years for the plant to mature enough to bear fruits, my friend got to try it out right away. Now the plants have been germinated and... [more]

MeFi post: Free Range Kids
I think a comparison of responses to how much freedom should kids have against socio-economic background would be very interesting indeed. I recently went through training for a tutoring program in which some tutoring sessions may take place in the library. The trainer said specifically, "Remember, these are kids from low-income families; they might take the bus by themselves, they may show up without a parent." Surely the amount of time parents can spend... [more]

MeFi post: The Last Temptation of Visual Parodists
The first one that came to mind was the banner at The Petite Claudine. (some NSFW images sometimes, although currently the first bit of nudity occurs way after the fold.) I kind of hoped it would appear on the list because I'd like to find out more about it.

On postview, the all Japanese schoolgirl version is included in wendell's MORE link in his comment. That link is almost superior to the FPP one, IMHO. I didn't think that the commentary was very insightful and there were repeats. Perhaps he has not the google-fu of our wendell.

MeFi post: The world's first Swahili clock
Seeing how Swahili is heavily influenced by Arabic, and hence Muslim culture, there's another important reason for why this clock makes sense; it lines up so nicely with the five prescribed Muslim prayer times. Now, I can't explain why Islamic "days" start at night instead of the morning, but isn't it entirely logical and practical that the first thing that you do (along with everyone else in your society) synchronizes with the first hour of the day?... MeFi post: Trebek: the glue that holds television together.
Anyone remember the portrayal of Trebek from DFW's "Little Expressionless Animals" in Girl with Curious Hair?
A game show host has a fairly easy professional life. All five of a week's slots can be shot in one long day. Usually one hard week a month is spent on performance work in the studio. the rest of the host's time is his own. Bert Convoy makes the rounds of car shows and mall openings and Love Boat episodes and is a... [more]

MeFi post: Imagine if this was the life we were living
It is a very sad situation, indeed. I was in Kenya for two months beginning in September. There were scattered incidents of violence at political rallies during the campaign, but nothing to suggest the horror that has unfolded since. I'm worried for my friends and colleagues, some of whom came from slums such as Kibera and Mathare that have been engulfed in the chaos. I would note that I found tribalism to be very entrenched amongst Kenyans. They vote along tribal lines, they have... [more]

MeFi post: Nowhere to Run
Sorry to have to point it out, but I think you mean Eldoret.
It is indeed saddening to see the most promising country in East Africa laid low by it's unscrupulous upper class. I was recently in the country for a couple months. I was shocked at how deeply entrenched and accepted the tribal rivalries are. Everyone seemed to believe that these troubles were all but inevitable after the election. They also knew the election would be rigged. I was, perhaps naively, optimistic about this... [more]

MeFi post: Kymaerica
casarkos: yes. Tlon, Uqbar and Orbis Tertius

My mind is not made up on this project, but it reminds me of those professors I've had who've argued that once we fully understand something, especially creative works, they cease to be important.

Still, I'd like to be assured that what I'm looking at has some sort of meaning and is not, say, bird vomit.
