My Dawg vs Dog
A dog that cowers when you enter is probably being hit.
Most definitely. I'm going to chime in with the others and ask you to give this dog to the SPCA or one of those folks who offered to buy it as soon as possible, and say he ran away.

I'm not going to "LOSE" the dog. I'll try doing this through channels that don't involve lying/stealing.
Well, ok then ... seems like you're going to do the right thing :)

How to replace a shower head without actually replacing it?
They even do periodic check-ins to make sure it hasn't been replaced!
I'm betting they don't actually do this, they just say they will so that you won't change out the shower head. Apartment managers don't do anything they don't absolutely have to, and checking everyone's shower heads on a regular basis is a huge hassle. But if you're worried they will, just change it back before they come in (as others have said, they are required to give 24 hours... [more]

Proper Lasagna consists of RED & WHITE sauce, not PINK.
Seconding the use of ricotta -- I've never had a lasagne that used a white "sauce", but the white creamy part is always made from ricotta (plus a bit of egg, parmesan & basil).
Also, let it sit for a while after coming out of the oven, so that everything can firm up.

How to deal with age difference among friends?
Sounds to me like your husband's friends are terrified of aging. Just ignore their childish behavior and be yourself. Who cares what they think? Such immature concerns are beneath you. You're much cooler and more interesting than they are; they're pretending like they're still in their 20s and acting foolish. Don't waste another minute worrying about this -- find some decent friends closer to your age and let the children play.

For those about to work
-- Own up to your mistakes IMMEDIATELY, if you can't fix them without anyone noticing. It takes a while in a job to know what mistakes can and cannot be fixed (and I mean fixed, not covered up or blamed on someone else) without anyone noticing, so in the beginning you'll just have to fess up. The sooner the better. The longer you wait, the more hot water you'll be in. Chances are, if you tell your boss right away, he'll at least acknowledge your honesty and courage.... [more]

Seconding Kan Zaman ... if you go earlyish, you shouldn't have much trouble getting a spot at the bar. They have great Middle Eastern food, and a belly dancer some nights! Afterwards, sit on a comfy sofa and take in a movie at the Red Vic, just a few doors away.

Yes, it's normal. It's because the ground is so much sharper and clearer, that it appears to be nearer. Your eyes will adjust in a week or so.

I just re-read your question, and I'd revise -- if it doesn't correct itself in a couple days, go see your optometrist. But I do remember having that sensation with my first pair, and it did eventually go away.

Housing in Winnipeg?
Colony Square downtown is a huge apartment complex which I hear is fairly nice, and it's very convenient. Osborne Village used to be the hip center, but that's been migrating over towards Corydon Village. Lotta scary types hanging around Osborne these days. Either area is very convenient to downtown bus routes, and great for shopping and restaurants, but not terribly quiet. (Although some side streets off Corydon are quite nice, and quiet.) Grant Ave. is quieter, safer, has a lot of... [more]

Places in Maine to spend an anniversary?
Swans Island
It's about a 45-minute ferry ride out of Bass Harbor, and it's about as Maine as Maine gets. It's gorgeous and very peaceful.
If you want to be a little closer to some shopping and restaurants though, Belfast is a good choice. It's a rustic little town on the sea, and it's about a half hour drive to Camden, which is a tourist haven (gorgeous little harbor, but lots of tourists). Belfast would be quieter. How can I fall asleep without the nightly existential review?
Whenever I find myself plagued with life problems when I'm trying to sleep, I remind myself that problems like these are not solved by lying awake in bed, and are better tackled during waking hours. I make myself think of simpler things, things I enjoy doing (keyword SIMPLE. Small things). It relaxes me and helps me drift off.
If the bigger problems try to creep back in I wipe them out with static (picture a TV turned to no station, and white noise). Repeat as... [more]

I find it hard to maintain friendships with women
I'm the same way too. My first friend when I was a kid was a boy, and growing up I found that boys were just nicer to me than girls. Some girls in my school were pretty mean, and the one or two female friends I did have growing up ended up turning on me pretty harshly, usually at the urging of the mean girls. So I didn't really trust girls, never learned how to be girly, and only ever related to girls who were, like me, more like boys (liked to play with boys toys, ride bikes, enjoyed drawing... [more]

You're overgeneralizing. I don't get that from any of the commenters here, and I certainly don't project that attitude myself. No one's hating on women here. Please relax.

The Fit would be my first suggestion, but you may need to raise your price tag. I love my little Civic 4 door, but it's not terribly sporty (though I'm sure you can get one with a spoiler - voila, sports car. I think 2-door models are available too). Great on gas, peppy, handles well in snow, very reliable etc.

PeeFilter: Why can't I stop peeing in the middle of the night?
What mikeh and others have said, about the problem being mainly that your girlfriend's sleep is disturbed. It's perfectly normal to get up during the night to pee, I wouldn't worry unless you're getting up A LOT, 3 or more times a night. If you had diabetes, like someone suggested, you'd be peeing a lot, not just at night, and you'd be thirsty all the time and losing weight.

Travelfilter: When to tip, who to tip and how much to tip?
restaurants: I start at 20% tip for dinner, and subtract 5-10% if the service is poor. 15% tip for breakfast/lunch.
coffee shops/fast food restaurants: no tip in the tip jar, unless they've done something extraordinary
bars: $1 per drink, no matter what it is
taxi: about 10%
hotel staff: I've never tipped cleaning staff, but some people do. I don't think they really expect it, except maybe in the fancier joints.

note: if restaurant service is really poor, like the waiter isn't even trying or is just really unpleasant, I don't tip at all, of course. But that's pretty rare.

What kind of financial education are people getting in the States?
No -- we learned how to write checks and balance a checkbook, and spent at least half a year pretending we were communists and learning about Soviet economy (from I think the same commie teacher jessamyn mentions above), which was actually kind of interesting and fun (if you're a pinko), but not terribly practical. I would have loved to learn how the stock market works, and inflation and interest rates and all that, because I'm still confused by it.

No rest for the wicked, apparently.
Have you tried using a fan, or opening the window to cool the room down? Keeping water by the bed so you don't have to get up if you're thirsty? Not eating at least an hour before bed? Indigestion can give you vivid dreams and disturb your sleep.
Sometimes I take an OTC antihistamine if I'm having trouble getting to/staying asleep. Maybe try that. Just don't make a habit of it.

Help me find a shampoo that doesn't mess up my scalp
I used to get very itchy scalp (but no dandruff), and my mom suggested I try a shampoo made for permed or color treated hair (even though my hair is neither), and it worked -- I use the Herbal Essences kind. I can then alternate with a deep cleansing shampoo (like every third day or something) to remove buildup, with no problem.
