George Carlin Dead at 71
Dee Xtrovert: ... George Carlin's material seems even funnier and more intriguing today. I don't know the history of American humor, but with his wit, social commentary and willingness to tackle divisive topics candidly, he seemed more like a Mark Twain figure than a "stand-up comedian."
Don't know if anyone's commented on this yet, but last week it was announced he was to be awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour by the John F.... [more]

I think it needs a crafting system -- if the proteins could learn enchanting or blacksmithing, you could make totally twink armor and kick ass in PvP!

E: Hark, Babs, a question: where do eggs come from?
B: Fowl lay the eggs, mother, for us to eat.
E: Another question, O Babs: if the fowl
were chased from this earth, what then of the eggs?
B: such fevered imagining is folly!
E: Forsooth, Babs? If the fowl be gone, would not
also the eggs cease to be? Forsooth, Babs?
B: Aye, mother, but smooth thy furrowed brow, for
t'will always be chickens,... [more]

what active steps other MeFites are taking along these lines
I've begun replacing our light bulbs with those long-lasting energy-efficient ones, plus we rarely have more than one or two lights on in the apartment at a time. We turn computers off when not in use. We have a very fuel-efficient car (Honda Civic), and I take the bus to work roughly 3 days a week (even though my coworkers laugh at me for taking the bus). We carpool with my... [more]

28 Days Later...more stem cells!
I'm all for stem cell research (really), but I'd sure wish that while they're focusing on the womanly blood, they'd figure out a cause for the endometriosis that is causing me and thousands of other women constant agony and infertility, and maybe a cure while they're at it. How friggen hard can it be. But then again, stem cell research = glamorous, and endometriosis = yucky.

It sounds like those cells are a creative and productive bunch.
They also make a great adhesive, as any scan of my innards would show.
Plus it's a floor wax, AND a dessert topping!

Yes! You know how when your gut accidentally gets sliced open, and all your innards fall out and it's all ropey and slippery and you're trying to stuff it all back in but it keeps squiggling around? I totally don't have that problem anymore, it just comes out in one big clump that I can easily tuck back inside. We can make a mint off this stuff!

The Good Life
I was just a small-town girl, living in a lonely world. So I took the midnight train going anywhere.

That train ended up in some trainyard in farm country, so I said fuck it and bought a car.
But I never stopped believin'.

The end of the bus timetable
I too hope this comes to Canada. Standing on a boulevard with no shelter and constant northwesterly winds and -35 C wind chill for 20 minutes or more because your bus is late really really really really really sucks.

as was the "maybe they're doing this because of the writer's strike!"--does the writer really have zero clue about how long it takes to make a movie like this?

Nothing like a good Read.
I suspect they meant that they want to be a "really good" magazine, to the point where people will collect it. And call me old fashioned, but part of being a really good magazine is being a really good physical object, and "limiting" yourself to 1,000 copies (which seems like a huge number to me, but I live in the world of journals that hit 100-300 copies max) is a way of ensuring that you can afford to create nice objects.

Large Marge sent him.
I could swear that a young Reubens also appeared in The Rocky Horror Picture Show as a Transylvanian, but a search of IMDB brings up nothing. He's one of the partiers standing on the curving rampway down to Frank n' Furter's laboratory. Anyone else see him in that?

Astronomy Pictures
Gravity twists and pulls at the galaxies as they dance past each other. And, as if they resist the inevitable recession of their partner, they reach out to one another in what looks like a tender embrace, but is in reality a stark (if lovely) portent of the destruction wrought on both galaxies. [the two galaxies] passed each other ... 200 million years ago. The gravity of B ... drew out a long tentacle from the much larger A ..., and it appears as if the passage also... [more]

....nothing but the truth so help you yourself
This would've made a great opening for that private eye show from the 80s, Simon & Simon, with Rick and AJ going into the temple and pretending to worship and then the gods come out and Rick and AJ hand them a piece of paper and then they yell "you've been served!" and run away and then the credits start and the theme music with the cowbell. I loved that show even though it was a Magnum PI ripoff.

Romance via vague, anonymous e-mail
Check out the poem:
My angel,
Five years ago, I will always remember the day
When fate made us meet, blissful Alaskan moments in May
Earth spun around us and a journey began
Love, warmth, happiness, enough the years to span.
The longer it lasts the more grows our bond
And with 80 still – of you I will be fond
Whatever happens, I will stay at... [more]

As I understand it, the process for any deep fried liquid (Coca Cola, latte, whatever) involves making funnel cake batter but substituting Coca Cola (or any old fluid that you have on hand) for water.
Please do not use any old fluid that you have on hand.
