RIP Randy Pausch
This makes me so sad. I've been following his journey since I watched the Last Lecture about 4 months ago. If you haven't watched it, please do. It is really good.
My prayers to his precious family.

Southern College Accepts Dwarves
Mr Pearlybob was a video production major at SCAD back in the early 90's. The program was state of the art back then and the things they are doing now is just amazing. Such a great school and learning environment for the arts. I've been keeping an eye on this site for a while. Always find great stuff on there. Glad you posted it netbros!!

Primal Quest 2008; sleep is optional
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this kind of stuff. Always watched EcoChallenge. Of course I enjoy watching these hell-acious endurance races from the comfort of my armchair, remote in hand, box of double stuff oreos on one side and ice cold diet coke on the other. I wouldn't know the ass end of a kayak or a compass if my life depended on it.
I sure hope it never does!!

Nothing but to keep on trying
I just happened to catch a site with a live feed of the wedding this afternoon. It was so joyous to watch!! I really hope that it will "stick" this time and spread to the other states. Much love and happiness to all who will be married in the next few months!!

Bye Bye Blackboard
My daughter's school has "smartboards". Whiteboards that are touch sensative computer screens. State of the art technology and every second grader could use them just fine. Really amazing to watch her run the thing.

Jon & Kate Plus 8: raising twins and sextuplets on reality TV
Thank you free2bme. As someone who experienced the heartbreak of infertility I saw my Dr's as absolute miracle workers. They saved my life just as much as any surgeon or specialist might.
I've been following this thread tonight trying to think of something dynamic to say, something smart and stinging. Something to let the assholes upthread know how much their words hurt, because you are talking about my children too, not just the Gosslins. I've been trying to turn... [more]

Just saw this and I'm crushed. As mentioned upthread, the scenes in the CB show where Harvey is trying so hard not to laugh at Tim or Carol are hands down, some of the funniest things that have EVER graced the airwaves. I loved that show as a child and this man has always been one of my very favorites. May he rest in peace.

Do It Yourself Ghost
I shaped chicken wire into a large eagle for a high school bonfire once. Actually wasn't too hard and since you can keep re-working it, we actually ended up with a pretty good final result. That we stuffed with paper and burned to a crisp.
Love the garden idea!!

A google a day?
Milkrate makes a good point. You do a google search for say....festering, pussy, fanny zit and after you get your results, Google asks, "would you like to include this in your google health file?" Just like it does with calendar dates. Even if you say no, what will happen to the search? Is it tucked away somewhere in Google-land?

I had that cell phone in the mid nineties, or one that was very close. Mine was the official Motorola 1996 Atlanta Olympics version. It weighed about half a pound, had really shitty service and cost a fortune to use. I was the coolest kid on campus!!

The Major Little League
I agree that it is pretty cool but my first thought was that I would have been pretty wigged out as a parent. Who are all these people who know so much about my kid and why are they all here? I tend to be really over cautious about my kids so I would have probably thought about leaving. I would like to say that actually being there and experiencing it firsthand would have made a difference in my comfort level but I can't be sure. Still, I'm glad that those folks and children got a kick out... [more]

Absolutely phyrewerx. The man was talent personified and this article pained me. I know about the work and toll that proper classical singing takes on a healthy body and I know that his heart was broken to be reduced to this. I applaud him for this performance and the thousands of others with which he gifted us. RIP

Ok, I watched these damn things this morning and was completely freaked out. I get scared walking up stairs. The crazy part is that I keep coming back to WATCH THEM AGAIN!! What is wrong with me? Nebulawindphone, very well put. Also, when you feel that desire to have a child and are met with obstacles, medical, social, financial, most people will do whatever it takes to push throught them. Nothing is beyond consideration. I would love to see a follow up a year from now and get his opinion of the birth and newborn phase from his unique perspective.

It is possible for a biological woman who has not given birth to breastfeed. It takes several months of hormone/drug therapy and lots of hours of nipple/breast stimulation to trick the breasts into producing milk. It usually isn't enough to feed a child but can be enough to transfer the good immunities and give some of the benefits and bonding of breastfeeding. They also make special devices so that the mom can breastfeed the child and suppliment with formula at the same time. The baby gets... [more]

The Biggest Threat to Our Nation
Please folks, meeting hate with more hate is not the answer. Alot of the homophobic attitudes of the south come from fear of the unknown and just people having a hard time changing. Growing up in the 80's, aside from the guy on Soap, (that we weren't allowed to watch) no one knew anyone who admitted to being gay. IT just wasn't talked about and that has led to change taking a long time to come around. Even in Atlanta, there are still very strong homophobic feelings that unfortunately probably... [more]

In all honesty, I'm probably more of a liberal on the social aspect of it but very fiscally conservative and just seem to identify with the right more. We don't all think being gay is wrong, that is just the story that makes the press sometimes. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality in his teachings. Only that we should love our neighbor as ourself. Since I claim to be a Christian and not a Levitican (where the gay condeming stuff is found) then I will do just that. My best to love... [more]

Settlement in case of child who developed autistic symptoms after being vaccinated
First of all, the 3 month thing was a typo. There are a few other articles that clear that up. They meant to say in the months following the day that Hannah got 9 (NINE!) vaccines in one visit is when her symptoms started. I think that is where we need to be focusing our attention. Anastasiav mentioned it upthread but it bears repeating. The number of vaccines and chemicals that our babies are getting is getting out of hand. And usually, several at one time. They are creating vaccines for... [more]

DW, I know it can be very painful. My mother was hospitalized with it just because of the pain that came with having pox on her eyeballs and down her esophagus. She sufferd greatly, as did my brother at age 4. For some reason, I never had it, even with being exposed (on purpose) several times, never developed the immunities (titers) for it. During both of my pregnancies, I took a risk everytime I stepped outside the door. Especially when I went to my job as a teacher. It is a serious disease... [more]

Exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about zorrine. They make you think that the current grouped method is the only way to do it and it is not! They need to let parents know all the options for vaccination and give us the choice.

According to the experts, there is no more mercury preservative in vaccines so that is not an issue with a delayed shot schedule. As far as picking and choosing from "irrational, nutbar fears" I disagree. I feel like vacinating my children is important, just not doing it in such large doses of vaccine. I choose to spread it out and be cautious but still protect my child and others around us by getting the vaccines. I think that is a well informed decision and I feel like I'm doing... [more]
