Keep my garden growing

Where can I get quality seeds on line? Looking specifically for beets and chick peas (trying out mid-summer planting, why not). I have a broken ankle so I can't get to the garden store and they have garbage seeds anyway. Thanks!

Someone to fix my chimney

ChicagoMasonryFilter: A recent windstorm knocked the cover and some masonry off my chimney. My regular tuckpoint/masonry guys won't fix it-- they say the job's too small. Anyone know a reliable service that can repair this? Thanks.

We'll build our house and chop our wood

Is there are gardening wiki, or do we have enough gardeners here to have a garden.metafilter.com?

The Earls of Derwentwater

When King James VII of Scotland died in 1700, Louis XIV of France gave his word and his support to the cause of his son, James VIII, or the "pretender" as he was known to his enemies. One of history's most famous lost causes, the story contains smaller tragedies, like the downfall of the Radclyffe family of Cumbria. An almost embarrassingly romantic tale, it includes a "murdered" (actually executed) Earl (sound), a haunting (and some say haunted ruin), an "incorruptible" corpse, a daring prison escape and, according to at least one novelist, a possible American connection.

Little Mermaid Replica

I'm looking for a small replica (say 8-12") of the Copenhagen Little Mermaid for my garden pond. (In other words, suitable for outdoors.) Anyone know where I can get one? Tried to find online tourist shops in Copenhagen, but no luck. Thanks.

SAS112 Risk Assessment help

My midsized arts organization needs to complete the new audit risk assessment form SAS112. Has anyone done this yet? We need to know if there is standard language, suggested scope, any tips for getting through it with no staff time to spare. Found some stuff on google, but I'm still at sea. I've only made it up to page 19 with about 15 hours put into it, so either I don't know what I'm doing or this is a mess o' hard.

Spying on our animal friends

We're all used to animal cams at the zoo. You can watch animals in the wild or in captivity. But how about a live animal cam at...the library!

Orange you glad I asked this?

RecipeFilter: oranges. Oranges were buy 2 (3 lb bags) get one free today. Just juiced, zested, and peeled first two bags, yielded a quart of juice (which we'll drink), plus half a cup of zest and a cup of de-pithed peel before I ran out, so to speak, of my own juice. Now what?

The Jefferson Bible

Thomas Jefferson so wanted to fix what he thought was wrong with religion that he rewrote the Bible. He went through and cut out the parts that he liked most and pasted it to a fifth volume. He cut out Miracles. He cut out the Christmas story. He cut out most of the Easter story. Resurrection is gone. Wikipedia. previously

On-line calendar?

I need an on-line calendar to keep my large theatrical cast (10 principals, 30 orchestra, up to 15 tech-designers-directors) up to date on rehearsal/production. Okay freestanding, although we do have a website (website is currently not interactive and has no "members" section). Any suggestions?

Where all good bumpers go to die

Sculptor John Kearney of Chicago and Provincetown and his wife Lynn have been running Chicago's Contemporary Art Workshop in a former dairy for almost 60 years. Unlike their better-known contemporary the Hyde Park Art Center, (founded nearly the same year) the pair never let the gallery move beyond its original mission, to discover and support young artists, especially those with little or no exhibition background. The Workshop had early solo exhibitions for both artists who went on to fame, and those whose careers fizzled (full disclosure-that would be me) and has exhibited thousands in its 6 decades. Kearney, who worked with found objects from early in his career, is the best-known sculptor you never heard of, with his creative and amusing bumper sculptures all over Chicago.

Caution or deception?

A Planned Parenthood health center opened its doors to patients [in October], two weeks later than planned, after anti-abortion activists raised questions about how it received its building permits. Planned Parenthood is claiming victory, but :prolife/antiabortion: activitists are still smarting. But is the Aurora clinic just about abortions, or is it filling an unmet need in one of the largest population centers in Illinois? Illinois is ground zero for :prolife/antiabortion: activism

Bergman und Engel

You probably thought all those wooden toys and Nutcrackers from your local version of the KrisKindlMarkt were made in Bavaria. But wooden toys from Germany were an economic engine that supported a large percentage of the population of the Deutsche Democratische Repulic. In fact, people in the DDR were not allowed to own these toys, they were all made for export to the west. You can still find "Unter dem Tisch" (secret, illegal) collections in towns like Dippoldiswalde in the Erzgebirge mountains on the Czech border.

The Lincoln Douglas monuments

Wie, bitte?

Help me with a German sentence (quote?). German speakers: is the following sentence a quote from German literature? It's in reference to a picture of a Jewish headstone with pebbles on it. "Wieviel Wissen wird unter diesen Steinen liegen" Just wondering if this is a literary quote, or merely the musings of the commentor.
