ThinkUp ThinkUp is a powerful, free, open source PHP/MySQL app that you install on your web server to collect and store all of your activity on social networks like Twitter, Facebook and Google+. It can analyze your activity, lets you search for your data (even past Twitter's search limits!) and is constantly being extended with new features and capabilities by a very active, diverse developer community.

What links could I use to teach tech geeks about inclusion?

What are good basic resources for teaching about privilege and access, particularly in the context of the tech industry?

RT @mathowie Anybody seen sites that scan cats?

Are there good examples of Twitter (or status updates on Facebook) being used to answer questions AskMe-style? Or even better, to collaboratively solve a problem, like when the Scooby Gang here sussed out Kaycee Nicole?

I love Jay-Z, but autotune is still alive and well. For now.

What's a good (and not terribly expensive) portable setup for adding AutoTune to live vocals? This would be in NYC, and the world needs to experience AutoTune karaoke.

Did UAL's billion-dollar drop affect banking?

Did the United stock drop have any catalyzing effect on other recent collapses?

Blogs.com is a directory for... you guessed it,...

Blogs.com Blogs.com is a directory for... you guessed it, blogs! We made it at Six Apart, with probably half a dozen of the team members working on the project being long-time MeFi members. The goal of the site is to help readers discover new blogs, and to help bloggers attract new readers. The site editors pick blogs to feature in a bunch of different categories, based on submissions from bloggers across the web (That means you should submit your blog!) and those editorial choices are joined by Top 10 lists created by popular bloggers, kind of like Celebrity Playlists on iTunes.

What are soundalike songs in commercials and TV called?

What's the term of art for songs that are written to sound very similar to well-known or current pop songs? For example, lots of commercials and TV shows use backing songs which are clearly meant to evoke (rip off?) a song you already know and might hear on the radio.

The Green Should Be White

Ask MetaFilter should default to a white background for new users and those not logged in.

Glasses or Contacts

Spectacles only? I got a copy of my glasses prescription from my eye doctor, and it says "Spectacles only". I have an existing copy of my contact lens prescription, complete with measurements. If I keep the same numbers but substitute the new sphere measurements, can I order contacts with this prescription?

Loosening a stuck bolt on bathroom plumbing?

Help me! I'm sinking! How can I loosen a *really* stubborn nut that's holding my old bathroom faucet to the sink?

Server up

Server's back up. Not all the updates are done, but the server should be exactly the same as before.

Sorry about the downtime. I was dicking around with the server a little. Things should be back to normal now. More downtime tomorrow, perhaps as I finish the upgrades.

NYC Meetup

Some good news in Manhattan: an NYC webloggers' get-together. We are assuming that south of 14th street will be open by Friday night, but if not we will find a good replacement, I'm sure.

It'll do us all a world of good to get out and live a little.

Zeldman's site is down because he's hosted by a company called Internet Channel

For those wondering, Zeldman's site is down because he's hosted by a company called Internet Channel. (INCH, familiarly.) INCH's servers and connections are completely down.

Onion-filter

It's not a double-post. It's not a troll. It's not a self-link. But it is just a "Ha, ha, ain't that funny?" link to an Onion story.

Am I being too picky for objecting? Should we have a required reading list for MeFi users?

Where's that spring-loaded running shoes post?

Am I just stupid? Neither the MeFi Search nor Google's site-specific search are yielding the thread on the russian spring-loaded running shoes that help you go thirty miles an hour.

Did I just imagine that they exist? Or can someone else find that thread?

Speedy MeFi

Great job, Jason, MeFi is speedy once more. And I'm within a mile of the box itself.

Somehow being in such close physical proximity to MeFi is soothing.

Hello, Peril. The so-called model minority inspire an amazing amount of mistrust, according to a survey of US residents. Featuring the revelation that one third of those polled "said Chinese Americans are more loyal to China than to the United States. "

I want my MTV.

I want my MTV. There was a time when the only ads MTV showed were ads for the network itself. These are some of them. (from the U.K. so they might differ from the slate of ads run in the U.S.) Brings back many fond memories of the animated letters M, T, and V. (link courtesy of Saima)

Please proceed directly to "MTV used to show videos!" and then continue to more forced commiseration and remembrances of media conglomerate advertising as a substitute for a rich shared cultural heritage.

MetaFilter reaches $1000 on Amazon

Hey, since MetaFilter just reached a thousand bucks on Amazon (plus some unknown amount on PayPal...) don'tcha folks think Matt should take Kay out to dinner or something, as his reward for doing all this work?

I know that would be at least as exciting as another 128MB of RAM or whatever...

Does anyone want to meet up?

Having just come back from meeting Matt and many other MetaFilterites at SXSW, (MeFi actually got name-checked on damn near every panel I attended...) I'm curious to see who would be interested in having some sort of in-person gathering where we could all get together to meet.

Or maybe even multiple ones, in SF NY and Austin, say...? Would anyone be up for that sort of thing? And what would we call it? MeFiFoFum Day?

The 5k has returned!

The 5k has returned! So, is this just of interest to web geeks, or will it cross over to the general masses of curious web surfers? Is it more about functionality in the tiny site, or art? What's the deal with the "Anything Goes" category, is it compromising the idea of the 5k? So many questions...

Am I fucked or not?

Am I fucked or not? In the best MeFi tradition of flogging a dead meme and reveling in schadenfreude, it's a "hot or not" for rating the viability of dot-coms.

And you thought Microsoft was evil.

And you thought Microsoft was evil. There appears to be pretty significant evidence that IBM was involved in automating the persecution of Jews by the Nazis. Read more about it here, here and here.

And since we haven't even settled the question of when a nation has atoned for its sins, what exactly is the statute of limitations for a company's sins?

"Ante up!" Say the good folks at Pyra, as Blogger goes to telethon mode and asks for New Server donations. And they really suckered me in, too, because sufficient donations yield free stickers!

In addition to having a pretty much useless product, CueCat's product-release-to-privacy-violation rate is spectacular! To quote their email:

Dear :CueCat member,

Proprietary URLs? How many of these non-standard prefixes does your system support?

Just off the top of my head with the programs I have running right now, I can handle nap: aim: hotline: and a few others, not counting all the ones built into my browser.

More inside...

Blogger/Pyra is getting into hosting?

Blogger/Pyra is getting into hosting?

Blog*Spot.com is run by Pyra, it's obviously not done yet, but it looks like it'll be an easy-to-setup microhost for blogs, complete with templates.

On a semi-related note, is anyone using WrapZap as an ASP for forms on their blog? Seems like integrating that with Blogger would be a nice little bit of advanced functionality for Blogger Pro.
