Hostel Careers is a website that lists job postings for HI hostels in the West.

I believe that with HI you will have your lodging deducted from your pay. From what I understand, this is standard with most of the ski town hotels and hostels.

Wages aren't too bad depending and you'll get lots of hill time on your days off.

Sometimes the keyboard lags (for no apparent reason). I find this incredibly annoying, but a reset usually fixes it. Sometimes it disappears on it's own. I actually like texting on the iPhone.

The biggest issue I've encountered is the phone dropping calls (both incoming and outgoing). I called Rogers and they told me to turn off 3G and use EDGE. EDGE is next to useless once you experience 3G. A reset fixed it for me, but I've heard turning Airport Mode on and off does it... [more]

We use a 1 gallon ice cream pail. The lid keeps the smell in and all you need to do is rinse it out when you empty it.

Not enough tissues? Hit the washroom and use toilet paper to blow your nose. Before you leave, grab a handful, fold it up and pocket it.

Is there a small button on the front edge of that little box at the base? I imagine this controls a pin that goes into the door frame. Are you sure it's a knob and not a button to push the pin down?

I'd fiddle with the plastic box a bit. Having a lock on it makes me think this is what's holding you back.

I loved Portland when I was there about a year ago. There are so many things to do. We stayed the the HI Hawthorne and found it central to pretty much everything. It's a pretty rad hostel with some great staff. Lots of neat cafes and shops around.

Powell's is relatively easy to get to and definitely worth a visit. I could spend weeks in there. We got separated and it took us about 30 minutes to find each other.

I highly recommend the backpack with the daypack attached to it.

This is the pack I use. It is a panel loading pack so it'll be just like a suitcase (no digging around in that top load pack for the clean socks at the bottom).

When you get to the airport, take the daypack off, stash the straps on the main pack and send it off to be checked. No fuss.... [more]

The artist is Mark Jenkins and I believe he has instructions on his website. Wrap your leg in plastic wrap then wrap that in a couple of layers of packing tape. Use scissors to cut a slit and slide it off and then repair the slit with more tape. Voila!
